À propos de cet audio

An engrossing, “completely fascinating” (Cosmopolitan) memoir revealing the author’s struggle to come to terms with her own sociopathy and shed light on the often maligned and misunderstood mental disorder.

Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other people did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

In college, Patric finally confirmed what she’d long suspected. She was a sociopath. But even though it was the very first personality disorder identified—well over 200 years ago—sociopathy had been neglected by mental health professionals for decades. She was told there was no treatment, no hope for a normal life. But when Patric reconnects with an old flame, she gets a glimpse of a future beyond her diagnosis. If she’s capable of love, it must mean that she isn’t a like the madmen and evil villains in pop culture. With the help of her sweetheart (and some curious characters she meets along the way) she embarks on a mission to prove that the millions of Americans who share her diagnosis aren’t all monsters either.

This is the inspiring story of Patric’s journey to unlock the true nature of sociopathy and build a life of love and hope against all odds.

I'm rather speechless. I couldn't get enough of this insightful book. I truly feel I have looked behind a forbidden curtain inside the mind of the author. The journey is filled with thrill, intrigue, and strangely enough, emotion! I think I'll read it again

Truly riveting!!! I couldn't put it down!

I thought the concept of this book was quite interesting but after halfway through, I was just ready to finish it. It felt a little redundant after a while but I can appreciate how the author was detailing the progression of her findings.

Interesting Concept but Lost Steam

I really enjoyed it. I thought she did a great job narrating it and despite what I’ve seen in other comments I enjoyed her voice.

It was interesting. Thought provoking.

The book was fascinating - I just wish her voice didn’t sound the way it does. I was cringing at the way she read it. I probably would’ve enjoyed the physical book better than the audiobook, because it truly was an interesting and fairly well-written memoir, if you could get past the weird tone of voice. Whether her story is fully true is up for debate, but it was entertaining nonetheless.

Interesting Story, Awful Speaking Voice

I learned so much from Patric’s story. Her story is captivating and has given me a new perspective of sociopathy. Highly recommend this book.

4.5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

“Your friends would probably describe me as nice. But guess what? I can’t stand your friends. I’m a liar. I’m a thief. I’m highly manipulative. I don’t care what other people think. I’m capable of almost anything.”

I found this so fascinating. A glimpse into the lifelong struggle of a sociopath trying to seek answers about who she is, and overall, grow to accept and love herself.

It’s a blend of beautiful prose, memoir storytelling and a dissertation on sociopathy and personality disorders. I found it to be unflinchingly transparent, entertaining and disturbing at times to see into the mind of a sociopath and compare to my own thoughts and the socialized zone I operate within, like most people, one that sociopaths are not impeded by or feel beholden to.

I also can’t help but recognize and appreciate what I imagine was a gargantuan undertaking to choose to work at managing her sociopathy and eventually write this book. A lifelong undertaking that lacked a clear path to follow, so one had to be made.

Fascinating

A captivating read ultimately about self-acceptance. Anyone who has struggled to accept a part of themselves that feels different or is rejected/considered wrong by societal norms will see parallels to the experiences and thoughts shared by the author in this book. Very much enjoyed the personal and intellectual journey as a reader learning to appreciating the value of all spectrums of neurodiversity, each bringing its own strengths and challenges.

Fascinating and engaging storytelling

I sometimes zoned out. I think that is more about me than the book tho. I enjoyed listening to her. I liked her voice.

I learned a great deal this interesting memoir and feel it will help me understand and help some of my students. Statistically we know psychopaths and sociopaths are part of the fabric of society and the more we are able to help them the better it will be for society. I thought the author was a fantastic narrator and enjoyed her voice. A few times I felt the author repeated the same things, hence the 4 star overall. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and listened to it all in the space of three days.
