Description

In a world full of super powers, Felix has a pretty crappy one.

He has the ability to modify any item he owns. To upgrade anything.

Sounds great on paper. Almost like a video game.

Except that the amount of power it takes to actually change, modify, or upgrade anything worthwhile is beyond his abilities.

With that in mind, Felix settled into a normal life. A normal job.

His entire world changes when the city he lives in is taken over by a super villain. Becoming a country of one city. A city state.

Surprisingly, not a whole lot changed. Politicians were still corrupt. Banks still held onto your money. And criminals still committed crime.

Though the black market has become more readily available.

And in that not-so-black market, Felix discovers he has a way to make his power useful after all, and grasps a hold of his chance with both hands.

Warning and minor spoiler: This novel contains graphic violence, undefined relationships/partial harem, unconventional opinions/beliefs, and a hero who is as tactful as a dog at a cat show. Listen at your own risk.

Great bit of fun

I loved this audiobook. It’s great fun! It’s not “great literature” in the classic sense, but it’s not meant to be. Instead it’s an entertainment piece… the “guilty pleasure” book, as it were.

I hope the next book is as good or better.

The character interactions are great. The plot details are over stretching logic or a good explanation. Jeff Hays is awesome like usual. We will see how the next book goes without him. In my opinion the reader can make or break an audio book.

lLight listenimg

This book doesnt ask a lot of you, so it is only fair that you not ask a lot from it. The narration and production are good. The basic premise is pretty good and the characters are good. It's just that the story plods along without a lot of twists or demands on you. Then it just sort of ends which I did find a let down. I found it was fine entertainment for a daily commute.

Enjoyable despite some issues

First, the performance of the reader is amazing. I plan to get more audiobooks read by Jeff. The different voices and tones helped me get through the latter part of this book.

The beginning of the book and the MC's power is wonderful. I like the premise. Watching him climb out of debt and succeed in his powers got me latched on. Couldn't stop listening, at least for the first half.

However, the last half of the book is too easy for Felix. Doesn't struggle too much until the climax. It was nice seeing him build from the ground up but when he got bigger, fewer obstacles, and no permanent consequences. The reading of the stats was fun at first but after reading lengthy stats for multiple people, I began just tuning them out.

I'd still recommend this book to those who can look past some of its faults. I don't regret getting it.

No point

Some light spoilers to follow. Also to note I got this book free in a buy two get one free sale.

*Spoilers*
No point to the story and almost no plot.
Not smutty enough to be a smut book and definitely not built enough to be a super hero book.
The plot often seemed to drop or changed on a “one liner” or “amazing play” by the main character with no real drama or intrigue to follow.
The book takes a light approach to a villain run world setting and slavery.
Most characters are basic and do not grow.
Also when the narration gets to the “character sheet” and you have to hear a list on their stats it is incredibly difficult to listen too. This will sometimes go a while if there is multiple characters.

Highly enjoyable, definitely reccomend.

I have re listened to this series probably six or seven times through, at least the three I can get on Audible. I find the characters to be entertaining and I love following the growth of the characters as things continue to get more and more crazy. For this book specifically its an awesome introduction to the world and explains much of what's going on. There are harem-esque aspects to it that definitely get elaborated on in later books but I find the introduction and pacing of those relationships is definitely more realistically paced unlike most "day-1 here are 5 super attractive clearly into the MC heroines" story lines that exist. It really focuses more on developing Felix as a person and what drives him but also delves into all the main crew's wants and needs working on tangible reasons for why they work together, even with (and after) the contract magic being enforced. Again a really enjoyable listen that, if you like this style of genre, will keep you coming back.

A overall excellent story and narration

Get it if you like this kind of thing and if you don't. (the story has a great flow and plot but it can go on a bit on the dark side of you're average fantasy and it might not be for you if don't like that kind of thing)

Lot better than I thought it would be

I was looking at the reviews for this and really didn't think I would like it. Yeah it had a decent rateing but everyone was saying it was a bunch of wish fufillment harem sillyness. I thought I had run into some big new YA novel popular with younger folks or possibly that someone had paid for some good reviews. But I was in a hurry to get something before I had to hit the road and figured why not.

Really glad I did. It is a bunch of wish fufillment harem sillyness but is also well written. The characters are fun and grow well with the story. Paceing is spot on. I expected a lot of cringeworthy writing that never materierized.

it's not perfect. the points stuff is annoying and probably works better in the written form. And there are some issues with nonsensical plot points and characters occasionally behaving out of character. But overall it was a very pleasant surprise.

Interesting Premise but Rough Going

The basic premise behind the story has promise: In a world of superheroes, a man has the ability to modify just about anything but no "power" to utilize it. When he accidentally purchases some slaves, he learns that owning them boosting his own power. From there he tries to balance ethics against his building power. Naturally, his growing empire attracts attention...

In actual execution, the book is very uneven. The main character, Felix, is the definition of a Mary Sue. His slaves (though nominally free-willed as he doesn't ever really command them) all give him doe-eyes throughout the book. All his ideas work out swimmingly until the inevitable Second Act Crash and someone who was previously a fast food manager slips effortlessly into being essentially a major CEO. The writing is very repetitious. You'll get about 150 variants of this:
Felix: We should think of a solution
Slave: What if we did XYZ?
Felix: That's great. Remind me to reward you later.
Slave: Awwww... *Doe-Eyes*

The characters are pretty decent although they seem to slip out of character multiple times. The world building and super powers are interesting. The concept of Felix seeing everyone as a Role-Playing Game character sheet is interesting as well although it leads to plodding sequences in the audio version of the sheets being read over and over. That probably works better on paper where the reader can skim it instead of listening to it. This isn't the only book to suffer from that either: Looking at you here, "Ready Player One" scoreboards. Some plot lines or important points in the story get dropped without mention.

There is the whole harem thing although that didn't bother me so much as the uneven writing. Half the book is his core trio of women practically throwing themselves at him while he nobly declines and tells them all how wonderful they are so, while cheesy, it's not something that would bother me like the possible alternative.

The reading was pretty good. Character voices were distinctive and the male narrator did well with a largely female cast of characters. Effects are used for things like multiple people speaking at once, PA systems or internal monologues. I already mentioned the tedious readings of the character sheets but that's not on the narrator.

Would I recommend it? Maybe hesitantly. The basic story and world was interesting enough that I'm considering the next book just to see where the story goes but the overall experience keeps me from enthusiastically jumping in.

Great reading, sleazy story

Many of the characters are good, but the world built by the author makes everything sleazy.
It breaks it's own rules so that the male lead can be surrounded by slave women, and murder anyone he doesn't like.

It starts off saying super heroes/heroines are captured, beaten, and then sold. Except only one slave is a hero out of dozens. Never explaining why a super villian city is only selling super villains as slaves. Also, despite there being no gain for the villain to buy only women as slaves, he does exactly that. there is seriously no males as side characters at all, only minor inconveniences.

The main character says that his slaves are not for sex, but it feels like the author wished they could be. the whole thing plays out like a soft core fan fiction/anime hentai. If that's what you want I'm not judging, but if you want a good story, keep walking.

Great story but please stop with the numbers

A good original story, but I have to admit I always zoned out when the narrator went over the points spent / received totals like every 10 minutes. It wouldn't be bad if it was just a few times but my god he does it like ever 10 minutes (sometimes more then once) and it lasts at least a minute a go. Its all numbers at that point. Maybe try to cut it down or just go over the highlights and not read through every character each time.

Awesome listen!

Wonderful start to a potentially amazing series! The only part of this I disliked was the frequency of one aspect. The point counting. Needed in some spots but, honestly a couple times could have just been summed up with total/spent/remaining and it would have been fine.

Other than that I loved it! 12 hour book that I finished in less than 24 hours. I unfortunately had to stop listening to sleep.

Typically I dislike stories with harem aspect because they come off cheesey, creepy or otherwise lecherous. Arand managed to pull it off tastefully and it didn't bother me at all.

Have already suggested this book to several friends that are comic book fans, and will do so again.

Pancakes!

This story is like a food you like that never fills you up.

There is very little plot here, it is mostly a progression of events that ends abruptly and without developing into much of a story. That said, I enjoyed listening to it, but if you're looking for a meaningful story you'll have to look somewhere else.

The spreadsheets were a bit much for a narrative medium, but probably okay in written form.

Harem Anime in Book Form

This story was bearable for the first half, but the main character had no depth or struggle. It felt like a self obsessed teen wrote it. The main character is incredibly shallow, with no real personality or morals.

Skip it unless you're really into harem animes, which is exactly what this is.

Pathetic

The main character is the sad Mary Sue. Suddenly life is a video game and you're in a Harem anime. the women come in having been mutilated, broken and sold as slaves. The protagonist build them back up and nobly chooses not to have sex with them until they convince him that it's okay, they can share this former fast food manager turned wealthy CEO. The plot has more holes in it then a Midwestern Highway in late spring. The entire thing reads as someone's attempt at erotica, but couldn't bring themselves to go all the way.
