More Than Passable Anime-styled Entertainment
Will Wight crafts a fascinating Space Wizard scenario: Archmage 'Varic Vallenar' gets a frightening metaverse glimpse at a series of apocalyptic futures if he is unable to stop the various threats before they fully germinate. He desperately enlists the help of a legendary AI-powered vessel named 'The Lost Horizon' that makes him earn the captainship and the right to form a crew of six supersoldiers (that he had fought with/against in alternate timelines) to empower weapons systems & capabilities. This episode focusses on the fight against a Lovecraftian Borg-like species that subjugates & slaughters humanity - infusing organic matter into their bodies/ships/constructs with terrifying civilization-ending abandon.
The premise is intriguing, the blended sorcery/tech Magic System is original, the plotting is twisty-turny, and the combat is well-scripted. True, the book is more 'WH40K'-styled mindless action than cerebral "Space Opera", but as long as you set expectations reasonably, it's a diverting romp.
As to narration: quality reading from Travis Baldree definitely adds to the enjoyability of the book. His performance is by no means flawless (some character interpretations are disappointingly cartoonish, for example) - but you should choose this audiobook iteration over a text version, if given the choice.
Altogether, I quite enjoyed this 8/10-star Japanese Anime-flavored tale (color-coded Giant Robots, Space Kaiju, Super-Teams, etc). If you can get 'The Captain' as a 'Plus' option.. it's a no-brainer. Download immediately.
It didn't captivate me enough to prompt listening further in the series, but could easily do so with you. It would actually rate a Credit for existing Wight fans - or even just imaginative listeners looking for a fun SciFi/Fantasy distraction for a cross-country drive or a couple of boring night shifts.

fun book
a fun listen, but I felt the MC was overpowered most of the book and I didn't really understand his capabilities like I did for characters of other Wil Wight series. the combination of magic and technology was neat, but I would like to know more about the limitations of what could be done in this world.

banger nonsense of the highest form. loved it.
he has done it again. I sware this man writes stuff designed for my weird brain as I have read all his stuff lately. this book is star wars meets power Rangers all presented with the same delightful charm and humor of cradle. if space Wizards, robot zombies and a red Ranger with the literal power of friendship sounds fun, read this ASAP.

Scifi + Comedy gallore - Excellent Listen
Such a wonderful unputdownable listen! Even though I am dying to listen to how Cradle would end, this has just hooked me on to the next WW series! Next book when please! Loved all the subtle and cheesy references throughout the book as well as in the bloopers! Talking of bloopers, I loved the special guest appearance from Cradle. ❤️
Also, was it just me or did this book sometimes give a strong One Piece vibe with all the nakama power - especially when it came to Rayon? Am sure Luffy would welcome him with open arms, especially with the extra gear he comes with 🤣 (ugh, difficult to keep this non spoilery). Regardless, wonderful read - can't wait for the next one! :)
