Gets better

The first half of the book is a bit rough however it does get quite a bit better once the demons and other NPC type characters are fleshed out and you start seeing different perspectives. Overall satisfying but only if you put at least 7 hours into it

Edit: After listening to the second book I can say that it is similar in tone to the later parts of this book and has been worth putting in the time as a listener. Updated start rating to 4 after a reread.

It Was Alright

Very standard, typical. Not a whole lot of new, but decent nonetheless. It certainly got a lot better nearer to the end, but it wasn't necessarily bad nor amazing at any point.

pretty good

the author's vocabulary and word choice need improving. Reading "didn't dare" as the preface to every choice the author wants to emphasize as important makes me wish he had dared grab a thesaurus, and occasionally a dictionary. did you know decimated means killed one in ten rather than devastated? the author unfortunately doesn't seem to as he uses it as as the descriptor for the majority of impactful actions in every combat sequence.

Gross over usage of a handful of descriptors aside, the story is fun and the system mechanics and world are interesting and engaging. it made me want to design a d&d campaign with some of the ideas integrated in.

the combat sequences and power level descriptors need more care taken in word choices and less catch all phrases. Read Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn for truly masterful combat sequences.

Overall enjoyable, with fun rapid pacing. I will keep reading and think the author's overall story is engaging and fun.

P.S a good editor would take your stories to the next level very quickly!

Pretty good, just minor gripes

Story is good, but the first half is pretty slow, narrator is alright, but I think they did a bad job on the main character, I mean a big lumber jack looking guy and he sounds like he's a 14 year old nerd..

Beautiful

I have listened to all of these and pre ordered the newest one. They are fantastic! Great story line and each book is long. The MC is really relatable as he is a family loving man who at the start is super average. As the story progresses he gets harder to relate to because he becomes OP but you still feel like you can relate to him on a certain level. The secondary characters like Ogras, Thea, Emily, and more are hilarious and also very fun to track as they progress with Zack. Love this book, love them all!

My favourite series

I listen to a ton of books while at work and I’ve never found a better series than this. At the time of this review there are 5 books out and they are all gold.

Do you like tons of action and bloodshed and dislike a book getting too into plot? This is the book for you

A breath of fresh air

Most LitRpg protagonist are either downgraded versions of Deadpool or Cringe Lords...sometimes both. Overly sensitive over moralizing special boys that had a complicated love life and were both average Joe's and closeted geniuses at the same time.

Zach seemed like the same old same old story for half this book but...I COME FROM THE FUTURE...BOOK 4. And 4 books in i can easily say this is in my top 3 Lit rpgs.

The world got scrambled and humanity now needs to adapt to its new reality, and Zach puts mankind on his back does what he has to do to ensure that he, his family, and mankind survive. No speeches, no grandizing, no bs. Just a man who does what he needs to do. Its refreshingly simple and sometimes thats all i want

Worth a Listen

While I will say I was often cringing a little at the beginning of the book I became quite enthralled by the end. There where some questionable word choices and sentences in the beginning. While the words didn't always mesh well together it drastically improved as the book progressed along with all subsequent books. If I had to take a guess I'd say the author found their stride and stopped overthinking things.

I've listened up until book four at this point and am quite pleased with the author and narrator. Both have done a wonderful job keeping the book entertaining. Keep up the good work guys!

Stick with it, you won’t be disappointed

This whole book is action packed, but the first third was a bit much for me. Only one character, very little dialogue, just fighting and leveling up. That being said, the rest of the book is awesome. I’m glad I didn’t stop listening. This is a very well executed litrpg. It’s vibe is closest to “he who fights with monsters” or “codename freedom”.

long and satisfying

Zack grows in power at a steady stable rate no instant god mode or nothing he has to earn most of his power sure he starts off lucky but so do all litprg characters but the author strikes a good balance between luck and effort

Solid Litrpg

Solid post apocalyptic/dystopia event litrpg/gamelit story. No Harem. No agenda. Just an MC with a bit of an advantage dumped into an uncaring world with might and magic. The book primarily focuses on character growth and completing quests. Later it gets a bit of town simulation but still sticks to its roots which can be defined as, Axeman vs World.. Yes he's a bit op but it's a fun little ride. I'll be buying the next one fore sure.

Shoddy LitRPG

The MC has a level, rank/grade, class, rarity, attributes points, dao, cultivation, noble title and achievement titles to determine his arbitrary strength. There is even a town building system thrown in. The author has gathered every LitRPG system I can think of from this genre and blended them together with zero care or depth. I could go into detail about all the problems with the systems in this book but its just not worth untangling this mess. Eventually you will just lose interest because of how unreliable or unimportant most of the story is.

Lucky

I feel lucky that I found this book but the mc is even more so. Just try the book. I believe the mc's growth as a person will start soon. He is taking in humans and I'm sure will be trying to find family.

moronic mc

Once again the author makes the MCA moron so things can be explained also the author must think the readers are stupid as the author explains everything in excruciating detail Then add on top of that the MC is a Mega baby constantly complaining about everything think Stereotypical millennial

A Fantastic Start of a new Series!

JF Brink has crafted one of the best epic fantasy books that I've listened to in the past few years. There are many I've listened to that are extremely good, Cradle by Will Wight being very high on the list, as an example. However, At 23 and a half hours, this tome is on a level of Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings. Also, this being a litRPG genre, it is very hard to find a book that runs that length without a lot of exposition, repetitive filler sections and stat-bane poisoning. None of that exists here.

Furthermore, with almost 1200 titles under my belt, I have ended up finding that I have many authors on my "favorites" list and I find I am reluctant to take chances on new or unknown authors. I took a chance on this book because of the sample audio and what seemed like credible high reviews. I wasn't displeased and highly recommend it as being well worth the cost of a credit.

Pavi Proczko's performance was superb for this type of novel. His dispassionate approach to the narration is similar to Travis Baldree's, another fantastic narrator and as with Travis, I find myself picturing them reading books to their children or grandchildren, lighting a flame within to enjoy more books. It's a gift I am very envious of.
