Description

In this gripping thriller, an ex-agent on the run from her former employers must take one more case to clear her name and save her life.

She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning.

Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

When her former handler offers her a way out, she realizes it's her only chance to erase the giant target on her back. But it means taking one last job for her ex-employers. To her horror, the information she acquires only makes her situation more dangerous.

Resolving to meet the threat head-on, she prepares for the toughest fight of her life but finds herself falling for a man who can only complicate her likelihood of survival. As she sees her choices being rapidly whittled down, she must apply her unique talents in ways she never dreamed of.

In this tautly plotted novel, Meyer creates a fierce and fascinating new heroine with a very specialized skill set. And she shows once again why she's one of the world's best-selling authors.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Even with Archer's outstanding portrayal of Alex, secondary characters Kevin and Val still steal all their scenes, thanks to Archer's memorable voices. Pack your go bag and enter Meyer's breathless romantic suspense." ( AudioFile)

Absolutely impressive!<br />

I didn't know what to expect after reading the Twilight trilogy at my daughter's urging, and then realizing that this was the same author. that of course was years ago...
I am thoroughly impressed.
the chemist is fast-paced and has twists and chuckles with very realistic reactions from strong characters.
i can't wait to buy it for my daughter and make us even...

I picked up this book at a friend's house and thought it sounded very good. And I was not disappointed I was hooked from the beginning.

Love this Book

I love the flow of this book it takes us down a twisty roller coaster of a ride. I wish she had written more with this ...and made another series .. could be one of the great series

Hard to get into, but when I did, I couldn't stop!

I found the reader pretty boring at first. Also found the beginning of the book hard to get into. Probably around chapter 11 or so it got better and so did the reader.

Wonderful Read

A complex, twisted tale of nasty secret government departments and their pathological indulgences in skulduggery and betrayal. It’s not a tale pretending to be factual or based on facts, but the fictional, nasty operations involving CIA and other less visible departments are completely believable.
I found The Chemist to be a compelling read, and fun. I could root for the good guys and indulge a desire for dastardly revenge upon the bad guys.
I found the narrator to be Excellent...but then I really like Ellen Archer’s narrations.
I would strongly recommend The Chemist.

Worth it!

At first, I didn’t think I was going to make it through the 17+ hrs.. the narration wasn’t my favorite.. it still isn’t the best, but it somehow grows on you. You end up full on caring for the characters and you get sucked into the plot. I couldn’t wait for my next chance to listen. It tugged at my heart strings. Give it a chance if you’re not too into it at first.. it’s worth it! I finished it within a week.

Fun read, good narration, unnecessarily sappy

I enjoyed this read, but didn't love it. I was initially drawn into the story for its intrigue and for the main character with her rational, specialized, hardened mindset. It felt quite out of place when the thing turned into an intense, kind of sappy romance halfway through. While I can appreciate that there was romance, the level seemed a bit much for the serious tone established in the first half of the book.

In general, I think the second half of the book is a lot weaker than the first. Once the mystery is mostly solved, the momentum dies out a bit for me.

I did quite appreciate the narrator, I thought her take on the protagonist added a lot and her voice suited the content.

Great premise

The premise of this book was a fascinating idea and the story was well told. My only objection was the over-the-top and sometimes cringe-worthy romance that felt like unwillingly watching PDA. I'm a girl and love some good passion and romance in a book, but there was far too much and it got uncomfortably sappy at times. Other than that, great book. I would still recommend it.

Torture and love

Started strong as a woman who tortures people for the government becomes the hunted. A few chapters in, however, the book shifts into becoming a improbable and sappy love story between our hero and an innocent victim of hers. It’s all downhill from there.

I regretted this purchase as, by the end, I felt like another victim of The Chemist.

Listened all night!

Any additional comments?

Awesome book. It is a good thing I am retired because I did not sleep at all because I had to find out what happened next. Some reviewers did not think the characters were well developed, but I must disagree. I believe they were very well fleshed out and were interesting people. The plot was intense but I cannot explain why without giving spoilers and I don't want to do that.

I loved the part the dogs play in the story. I wish they had been addressed in the epilogue because they were so lovable and brave. However, the book does not leave you hanging. It wraps up at the end but leaves the door open for a sequel, which I would very much enjoy. I hope the author has one in mind.

The narrator is excellent. There were no fake voices. There was not a jarring diference between female and male voices. She was not over the top and dud bit bring attention to herself and get in the way of the story. I was impressed and pleased with her performance.

A good, easy listen to pass the time

This is a good conspiracy novel with a little unrealistic romance thrown in, but we knew it was going to happen. The story wasn't overly complicated and was predictable in many parts, but it was fun to listen to. The performance by Ellen Archer was excellent. There are a few annoying things about the characters such as the insecurities of the heroine that make a grown woman sound like she is 13 and the naivete of Daniel that is unrealistic for any grown man. The story gets better as it goes along and overall was definitely worth listening to and quite entertaining.

Great Listen

I was skeptical, but the story, charaters, twists and turns had me wanting more. Great attention to detail, vivid feelings and raw emotions. Cheesy ending that played perfectly. Just what I needed to get my rouge-agent-spy-suspense-romamce fix.

Fell short of my expectations

When I saw this book under the category of Espionage, my first thought was this is not a subject I would expect from Stephenie Meyer to explore. I was enticed by the title "The Chemist" and I expected a plot delving deep into espionage and more into the mind of the protagonist with some who, what and why she was "The Chemist". What I found was an odd mix of shallow characters, a rushed plot that wanted to be a romance novel more than an espionage novel. Now, I enjoy a romance novel now and again but I found the romantic banter juvenile and strung out in wordy sentences that made me feel as though the Author needed to string this story out to make some number of words/pages quota. I for one was glad this story is over.

Bourne, Reacher and Mcgee - Nothing on The Chemist

Jason Boune, Jack Reacher and Travis Mcgee (all of which I like very much) have nothing on The Chemist. Good story! Good listen. Highly recommended.

I'll always read her stuff...but

What made the experience of listening to The Chemist the most enjoyable?

This was an easy read (listen) but I honestly felt it was overwritten. There were passages that went too long and too descriptive. I also felt like the "love story" was a bit forced and implausible. While we all expect a love story in Meyer's books, this was "too easy" and neither character resisted it much.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

For identical twins, there was more hierarchy between the brothers than seem natural. Kevin calling his TWIN "kid" was annoying.

Any additional comments?

While this was an easy listen and entertaining, if I were reading it, I would have skipped big paragraphs of description and "telling". She does a whole bunch of TELLING and not enough SHOWING. This makes sense for a Young Adult novel, but this was meant for an adult reading audience...thus why no mention of the vampire books on the cover......

Was not impressed.

This book was boring! I stuck with it because I thought it would have an amazing twist or turn eventually but no luck. It was a waste of time. Stephanie Meyers has a serious fantasy about clothes being ripped off in the heat of passion & big bedrooms. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
