Description
DS Whitney Walker wants a promotion, but it’s hard when she’s trying to balance motherhood with a career.
When a newborn baby is kidnapped from the local hospital, she draws on her skills as a mother to help. Despite being ordered not to, and when the leads are going nowhere, Walker enlists the help of a local journalist who’s convinced it’s the work of an international baby smuggling ring. Walker’s plan backfires and she fears they’re running out of time.

Solid story; strong narrator
Clare Corbett does a wonderful job here, narrating a tense novella. The ending is rushed but I did like the way the kidnapper got her own chapters talking in first person.

Listen to the Sample First.
I actually considered downloading further books in the 'Cavendish and Walker' series of Police Procedural Novels on the strength of fairly strong reviews and quality narration in the samples. Fortunately, this short offering is available for download and perusal. Sally Rigby's writing is, indeed, creditable - adequate vocabulary/prose, passable description, and commendable characterization - but the protagonist is (to me) unlikable and the plot (admittedly in a very short format) is superficial with a straight-up silly resolution. There is enough here for me to make a decision: Pass.
The narration, however, is quite strong. Clare Corbett reads with exemplary diction, timbre, cadence, and voice-acting - and with remarkably emotive tone. I would consider listening to a book just because she's attached to the project.
Bravo to Audible for making this presumably introductory Novella available to subscribers for free. Rigby's series is not for me.
[NOTE: This 6/10 star audiobook wasn't a total waste of time and the character may grab you in a way that I didn't feel. You wouldn't be making a mistake giving 'The Night Shift' a chance]

I kept waiting for the twist
Totally pointless story. I didn’t know that this was a prequel to further stories about this detective. Basically nothing happened. I was waiting for the twist or surprise but it was just some average crime story.
