Great Story

Love crawling into this story... I’ve read the books numerous times. It’s one of my ‘comfort zone’ stories. When feeling like a good book but unable to choose, this is one I always go back to. It was an interesting experience having it ‘read’ to me. I enjoyed it.

Brilliant Fairy Tales for kids 8-12

C.S. Lewis wrote this incredible literature in the 1950's.  Despite their age, the stories are not dated in any way... and despite the themes (the author denies the Christian allusions, but the themes are unmistakable - it's allegory). the stories are not overpowering or preachy. This is the highest quality children's fantasy. The books relate whimsical events surrounding kids in a world populated with mythical creatures, talking animals, and figures of genuine good & evil. The character of Aslan is obviously a Christ figure - complete with self-sacrifice, incredible empathy, and altruistic ethics - but all of the other characters (human and otherwise) have very human flaws that resonate. The fantasy is necessarily sophomoric (it's a children's series, after all), but there are mature elements as well - conflict, battles, and death.
These books are rightfully beloved and qualify as true "classics" - readers of all ages can enjoy them (although I could see how  "misogyny" could be accused - some of the female characters are stereotypical - but it's not bad imo... my daughter would be fine with this).

The seven books in the series are read by seven different readers - all well-known. All performances are excellent at the very least - Kenneth Brannagh, Michael York, Patrick Stewart... It includes straight-up brilliant performances from Alex Jennings and Jeremy Northam.

Altogether, this is a great value. Seven classic stories in one collection with 5-star readings. I broke it up - listening to other books between the Narnia tales - and it worked well. Coming back to this collection after reading something else was like coming back to a beloved familiar home. Having listened to a couple hundred Audiobooks (click on my profile), I can highly recommend that you buy this one. It's easily worth 4.5 stars out of 5.

Incredibly thought provoking and interesting!

It took a while, but finally finish the series. Although it is often described as a children’s story, as an adult i was often challenged and learned to look at things differently after reading. The narrators were wonderful too!!

Further in and further up!

If there’s a better story told to reset my compass to true north, please let me know. And the readers chosen to bring these 8 books to life are of the standard high enough to match these great adventures. 2020 may be our most dreadful year in living history, but what a morale boost and reminder that the best is yet to come. My only complaint is that now i recognize a homesickness for the land I’ve not yet reached. Further in and further up!

Ordinary nonsense

I was looking for something new after having read all I could get from Asimov. Well, the comparison is dreadful. While Asimov explores the future of humanity with amazing accuracy, carefully explaining the global consequences of technological breakthroughs, Lewis crafts a world where everything is magic and nothing has real consequences. The characters have simple goals but no complex necessity, they follow a journey paved with randomness and little cohesion, events happen by the Deus Ex Machina not because they make sense. The result is a myth, heavily influenced by religion, explaining death as "a better copy" of life. Exactly what Asimov expects from those who fear what he calls "the irreversible change", Instead of accepting death's finality and trying to improve life, Lewis offers a conclusion with questionable morality: "don't worry, you're all dead, it's fun".

The actors are doing a really good performance though.

Great strories, stellar performances, +some muzak

Great stories and stellar performances by famous Shakespearean actors, regrettably blemished by an "editor" slapping at random here and there 20 seconds of elevator music. Always the same 20 sec. piece! Sometimes it is between chapters but sometimes over the spoken text. WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU DO THAT?

Big Stars for a Big Collection

So happy to get this entire collection for 1 credit! There are no new recordings in this set but it is a impressive gathering
of the best readings of the books in this series. I own several of these on CD but did not have them digitally so I am very happy to now have the easy access to all of them. Here's a rundown of who is reading which book:

Chapter 1 / Titles Listing

Chapter 2-16 / The Magician's Nephew / Narrated by Kenneth Branagh

Chapter 17-34 / The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe / Narrated by Michael York

Chapter 35-49 / The Horse and His Boy / Narrated by Alex Jennings

Chapter 50-64 / Prince Caspian  / Narrated by Lynn Redgrave

Chapter 65-80 / The Voyage of the Dawn Treader / Narrated by Derek Jacobi

Chapter 81-96 / The  Silver Chair / Narrated by Jeremy Northam

Chapter 97-112 / The Last Battle/ Narrated by Patrick Stewart

Chapter 113 / Publishers Credits

A stellar value!

The story, of course, is a classic. The thing worth pointing out in this review is that instead of spending 7 credits over 7 months to get each book of the series separately, one gets them all together & for only one credit. The narrators & production values are impeccable, & the chapters are all helpfully labeled with the individual book titles ahead of them as well. I was dubious of this particular collection at first, based on its unofficial-looking cover art, but I can now report that it is precisely what you’d hope it’d be: the best readings of these classic books all in one superb package.

Excellent books, narrators, and price

To get all seven books of the chronicles of Narnia for one credit is too good to pass up! Lewis is was an excellent writer and storyteller that seems to perfectly mingle exciting adventures with deep spiritual truth. These books are all engaging enough to keep the youngest children interested, and yet have enough underlying messages to keep the oldest adults thinking. The only “downside” is that the narrators are all different, so there is a little bit of difference pronunciation of certain words, or occasionally a slightly different voice for a certain character, but this is almost negligible because there are different main characters for most of the books, and the male narrators are very similar. Prince Caspian was the only outlier, as it was narrated by a female. Though she did a great job, in my opinion it would have been wiser to keep the narrators all consistently male for continuity. I would highly recommend this collection.

Further Up and Further in to the World of Narnia

Wow! I am so glad that Audible now has this edition with all 7 books in it! I had been hoping to get all of the audiobooks and this set is just what I was hoping for! Each narrator does wonderfully with each of their own styles. Each story is so enjoyable and fun to listen to! I love the fantastical and spiritual themes these books hit. I would probably have to say that this is my favorite book series. Enjoy Narnia!

You must have this

I read the Chronicles of Narnia as a kid and it was always one of my favorites. I read the series to my kids. I have no idea why they call this the Adult Box Set but everyone needs it. While all the narrators were at least very good I have to say my favorite is Patrick Stewart. How can you go wrong, 34 hours of one of the greatest stories for one credit.

Well...

ok I decided to listen to the series. As a child I never got past Lion, witch and the wardrobe. now listening to all of them I can say ehh. Louis write in a heavy concentrated imagery of Christian dogma and sexist view of the 50s. (i.e. Man is Alpha, Woman is submissive, and all animals are just Beast and are for our will). once you get past this the stories are ok. I did really enjoy the ending of the last battle. it was well written and almost an apology to to women and "beast"

could have been better

Voyage of the Dawn Treader was ruined by an overly bombastic reader, who came off as condescending rather than energetic. I couldn't even finish it. His 'voice' for Reepicheep was annoyingly cartoonish. His inflections & tone for Lucy were almost as bad, deliberately making her sound as stupid as possible. Action scenes were torture to listen to. He was practically screaming, and instead of being caught up, I kept having to fast forward until he calmed down. I haven't disliked a reader so much since hearing the 'great' Roy Dotrice mangle Game of Thrones.
