I really enjoyed it. I read the book, so I new what was coming.... but, it still blew my socks off. I didn't think that the three body problem could be followed. But, ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯. it was done. this masterpiece even surpassed it. the vocal performance was top notch also.

if you like hard science fiction, this is a must.

An Almost Perfect Sequel

A great sci-fi read for first timers. The sci-fi aspect isn’t very outlandish given that there is a plot device that curbs technological development so nothing ever seems too foreign an idea.

The “Wall Facer Project” by far is the most interesting aspect of the book. Earth is facing an impending doom coming in 400 years and needs to work as a whole, through generations, to tackle this problem. 4 people are given unlimited power and resources and are tasked with finding ways to beat the aliens BUT must not let the aliens know what the plan is, despite their constant surveillance.

This leads the book to become a sort of mystery novel. Can you, the reader, clue in to what these people have planned? Who are the Wall Breakers? Can humanity work together or will it crumble under the pressure?

What stops this book from 5 stars? Well it’s hard to ignore the way female characters are written, it just sticks out. There is an entire chapter early on that would likely turn readers off of the book where one main character makes up a fantasy woman in his mind, flirts with her, falls in love with her, talks to her, and even goes on a road trip with her. It’s quite simply, very weird. The book treats it, however, as if it’s the most normal thing in the world. People even sympathize with him saying they have done the same thing?? If my friend told me he went in a road trip with his imaginary girlfriend and spoke to her the entire time, I’d be VERY worried.

She comes back several times in the book and every scene with her is just cringe inducing. I’d recommend either speed reading or just skipping these sections entirely.

It’s a real shame because this could have been a masterpiece if not for that one exceptionally misplaced love story.

4/5 - An essential read if you’ve read the Three Body Problem, but speed read or skip the love story.

The dark forest adventure

This author who wrote the dark forest pushes the boundaries of Science Fiction to the max. This book will shake you, like a tree shaken in the wind, through valleys and rivers of suspense and wonder. The beginning is treacherous, but it gets better after that. If you like science fiction, I recommend this book.

Great part of the fantastic trilogy.

Dark forest is a brilliant read. I loved the concepts put forward in the first book, and not only does this one expand on those concepts, it takes it to a whole new level. It's a very philosophical read that really makes you think about our place in the cosmos. The dark forest theory is a clever way to explain the Fermi paradox

fantastic story

narrator wasn't terrible necessarily, his accents were good, his delivery just wasn't there for me. maybe it also was the translation, but regardless, this story is absolutely fantastic and is a must read for sci fi

More enthusiasm and voice work needed

what an excellent science fiction story.

I wish the performance could have been more engaging, and I miss the cop character (Da Shi [sp]) having a distinct voice as he did in the first book of the series

Amazing book. The language is just like a real time tail. At the beginning I was sceptical about it, but I quickly realized that it is a must read book.

A master class in hard science fiction.

Masterfully written! Full of factual scientific thinking that that can feel a little long in the tooth if you are oriented toward that kind of book. it reminds me of the conversational style of Asimov when explaining science and concepts.

but it's all well worth. Cixin Liu unpacks such incredible ideas and, like a true master story teller, delivers a riveting twist and turn of storytelling.

Excellent Listen

I loved the idea of the wall-facers and wall-breakers. Throughout the story I was wondering what the plans were and when the answers were revealed I was always surprised. The main character is likeable as well as the additional characters. I was delighted with the return of the police chief and the role that he played. I recommend this book to individuals who liked the first one and encourage sci-fi enthusiasts to read the first book.
