Description

Nearly three million copies of Ruth Ware’s books sold worldwide.

The highly anticipated fourth novel from Ruth Ware, the Globe and Mail and New York Times best-selling author of the In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, and The Lying Game.

Harriet Westaway - better known as Hal - makes ends meet as a tarot reader, but she doesn’t believe in the power of her trade. On a day that begins like any other, she receives a mysterious and unexpected letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person - but she also knows that she can use her cold-reading skills to potentially claim the money.

Hal attends the funeral of the deceased and meets the family...but it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and that the inheritance is at the center of it.

Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, this is a pause-resisting thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

Most slow moving and repetitive book EVER

This book was excruciatingly slow moving and repetitive, the actual premise of the story is interesting but my goodness, get to the point already......if not for the narrator I would never have gotten through it....the ending was so weak and saccharine I was actually angry that I stuck it out.....would definitely NOT recommend this book.

Couldn’t stop listening

Well developed character in the lead “Hal” and plot twisting kept me coming back for more! Defiantly recommend!

Ruth Ware does it again!

If you're a can if Ruth Ware, and mysteries in general, you will love this! I have read/listened to so many books in this genre, some of the stories are beginning to get repetitive, but this one is fresh! Also, the narrator really puts on a performance and brings an already great story to life!

She managed to cough at last

Please don’t be mad at me for I am being honest and writing what I felt since I promised to be honest in my reviews.

The story had a good promising foundation and could have been executed in way much better dramatic thrilling way if we are going to count this novel in the thriller genre.
I have figured out all the twists before arriving to them. As a reader there is nothing more beautiful than being shocked by a thriller book
I think you can tell how I picked on the repetitive words in this book from the title of my review which repetition is not a bad thing if it’s done write for example with actions that character does to show their personality but in this case was words in the book and every one in this book coughed every time they speak.
Another thing, maybe it’s a me thing but this would have translated better as a play perhaps since it’s a heavy dialogue driven.
There was a looooooooot of telling with a little of showing. I needed to feel the character angry or sad and telling me they are sad or angry

I heard her other book the latest one The Turning of the Key is better so I am giving Ruth Ware another chance. Sorry I am not trying to be harsh but I have to say my honest opinion

Amazing.

I was 100% hooked before chapter one even started. 10/10 would read again. Imogen Church is one of my absolute favourite narrators and she blew me away with this performance as usual.

Favourite narrator for sure

Imogen Church does am incredible job(once again). She is phenomenal with ALL of the voices and accents! I was absolutely stuck on this book. Listened to the wee hours of the morning for many nights...tonight I'll get a good night's rest but will miss Hal and her "family"....

Brilliant, captivating, intense!

I became completely and utterly lost in this novel. At first I couldn't imagine where it was going. I thought I'd figure it out soon enough. But I didn't! I was constantly surprised and intrigued by the twists and turns, the questions and surprises, the depth of the unfolding mystery. Ruth Ware is a brilliant story teller, a master at mystery, and an exquisite writer. Imogen Church is the perfect narrator. I could hardly stop listening. I'd listen while I was driving to and from work, while I was doing mundane tasks at home (ironing, folding laundry, making salad); sometimes I'd just listen. I listened every possible chance I could. This is a fabulous, addictive, book in every way.
