Description

This highly influential work - now in a revised and expanded third edition incorporating major advances in the field - gives clinicians, educators, and students a new understanding of what the mind is, how it grows, and how to promote healthy development and resilience.

Daniel J. Siegel synthesizes cutting-edge research from multiple disciplines, revealing the ways in which neural processes are fundamentally shaped by interpersonal relationships throughout life. And even when early experiences are not optimal, building deeper connections to other people and to one's own internal experience remains a powerful resource for growth. Professors praise the book’s utility in courses from developmental psychology and child development to neuroscience and counseling.

New to This Edition

  • Incorporates findings from a huge body of recent research; over 1,000 citations added.
  • Revisits and refines the core hypotheses of interpersonal neurobiology.
  • Chapter on the experience of belonging and the development of identity.
  • New or expanded discussions of behavioral epigenetics, the default mode network of the brain, social neuroscience, cultural and gender issues, theory of mind, the Wheel of Awareness contemplative practice, the science of consciousness, and more.

Life changing

I'm so grateful that this book exist in audio format. The book is very dense and academically challenging at times. Being able to listen while following along with the text was extremely helpful. The content of this book has changed how I view almost everything relational. The performance was difficult to follow at times due to odd pauses in the sentences. However, I grew accustomed to the reader over time. I wish Dan Siegel would record this book in his own voice. Highly recommend this book!

The Emperor Likes to Use Big Words

I cannot comprehend all the 5 star reviews. This was most definitely the least favorite book I forced myself to plod through this year. The author employs lots of big words to say seemingly little which actually has a firm scientific basis.A magazine article would have sufficed.

A book I should read twice but can’t

Dan Siegel wrote many books. This book is the mother that birthed his other works. If you read this book, his other works like Mindsight, the Mindful Brain, Aware, and more would seem redundant. Despite this, you should read those other books first because this book is dense. This book has been used as a textbook in graduate courses.

Amazing!

Full of wisdom, insight and knowledge. Technical at times, but with some patience, fully accessible. A great read for anyone interested in learning more about themselves and the world.
