Description

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • John Grisham delivers high-flying international suspense in a stunning new legal thriller that marks the return of Mitch McDeere, the brilliant hero of The Firm.

What became of Mitch and Abby McDeere after they exposed the crimes of Memphis law firm Bendini, Lambert & Locke and fled the country? The answer is in The Exchange, the riveting sequel to The Firm, the blockbuster thriller that launched the career of America’s favorite storyteller. It is now fifteen years later, and Mitch and Abby are living in Manhattan, where Mitch is a partner at the largest law firm in the world. When a mentor in Rome asks him for a favor that will take him far from home, Mitch finds himself at the center of a sinister plot that has worldwide implications—and once again endangers his colleagues, friends, and family. Mitch has become a master at staying one step ahead of his adversaries, but this time there’s nowhere to hide.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Narrator Edoardo Ballerini masterfully narrates this sequel, reacquainting listeners with Mitch and Abby McDeere 15 years after their harrowing misadventures in THE FIRM.... Ballerini leverages his talent with accents as the action moves back and forth from New York to Rome, Libya, Morocco, and Maine. Impressively, Ballerini also finds credible voices for Abby, who plays a big role, and for the McDeeres' twin 8-year-old sons.... The result is a well-narrated audiobook." (AudioFile)

Grisham name carried this book

Did not deliver a Grisham type result. Vague and unbelievable in many ways. Least enjoyable Grisham novel ever read. Not impressed.

Hard to believe

This book is not the follow up to The Firm.
Not worth the money or time. Probably one of his worst attempts.

A lot about nothing

Billed as the follow up to The Firm. It is about a kidnapping and trying to raise ransom money but no tension is built. No sympathy built for the kidnapped lawyer. No particular feelings about the villains because the author doesn’t tell us anything about them.

Classic John G.

Good story with an abrupt ending.

Actually thought this was one of his better novels of late.

Disappointing

This book is so full of detail and quite difficult to listen to. It did not hold my attention.

Aimless.. Eventually Evolves Into A Subpar Abduction Story

The first few chapters make it look like John Grisham started writing this book without a plot in mind. He lays the groundwork for no less than *four* potential plotlines and then settles on a story where a dying friend's daughter is kidnapped by terrorists who demand $100 Million (for never explained reasons).. and force Mitch McDeere and his wife (Abby) to travel around Europe & Northern Africa to manipulate Law Firms & Governments into providing ransom money and jump through technical hoops for the secretive kidnappers. Yes, unfortunately, it's as scattershot & boring as it sounds.
On the positive side, 'The Exchange' is well-written (in terms of vocabulary/prose, setting, description, dialogue), and further develops the interesting central couple from 1991's 'The Firm'.
Sadly, the book has absolutely no connection to that first book (disappointing established fans), the twists and turns come out of nowhere & make little sense (disappointing readers new to this author), and the ending is so anticlimactic that you are forgiven if you throw your arms up in frustration that you spent so many hours on this mess.

Fortuitous for audiobook afficianados, however: reader Edoardo Ballerini puts in a yeoman's effort trying to elevate the book. He reads slightly too slowly (setting playback speed at 1.10X both improved the quality of his reading and helped me to get through the book more quickly) - and his accents are inferior enough to knock off a star in the "Performance" category - but Ballerini's professional diction/timbre/cadence is matched with an amazingly interested tone (given the text he's given).

Altogether, solidly above-average narration & production values from Random House Audio can't save this 3/10-star Grisham "effort". Save your Credit for something else from this author.

Missable

I picked this one up because I’d heard so much about John Grisham. The story was too predictable with too many unnecessary details. Almost felt like a book written to simply write another one. Characters were colourless and bland.

Over Pronunciation by Narrator Distracting

Could not finish this title; I tried several times but the narrator’s over pronunciation of all Italian names and words was distracting and detracted from the story. It left the flow disjointed and I eventually gave up which is too bad because I love this author and the story interested me very much.

Disappointed

This does not live up to John Grisham’s normal exciting work . The story drags. There was never any real danger and no actual climactic scene. Read more like a travelogue with people flying here and there and accomplishing nothing.
Very disappointing.
