It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

Description
Named a New York Times Best Book to Give
The world’s greatest detective, Hercule Poirot - legendary star of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile - returns to solve a delectably twisty mystery in this “masterful and multi-layered puzzle...adding a new dimension to a much-loved series” (NPR).
“Yet again, the diminutive man with the little gray cells delivers the goods.” (Wall Street Journal)
Hercule Poirot is traveling by luxury passenger coach from London to the exclusive Kingfisher Hill estate. Richard Devonport has summoned the renowned detective to prove that his fiancée, Helen, is innocent of the murder of his brother, Frank. Poirot will have only days to investigate before Helen is hanged, but there is one strange condition attached: He must conceal his true reason for being there from the rest of the Devonport family.
The coach is forced to stop when a distressed woman demands to get off, insisting that if she stays in her seat, she will be murdered. Although the rest of the journey passes without anyone being harmed, Poirot’s curiosity is aroused, and his fears are later confirmed when a body is discovered with a macabre note attached....
Could this new murder and the peculiar incident on the coach be clues to solving the mystery of who killed Frank Devonport? And if Helen is innocent, can Poirot find the true culprit in time to save her from the gallows?

So sorry to be disappointed
I am so sorry to have been so disappointed in this book. I loved Sophie Hannah's first three reimaginings of Poirot as well as his new partner in crime, Detective Inspector Catchpoole. I even believe Julian Rhind-Tutt to be a worthy successor to Hugh Fraser as the "voice"; however, in this instance I felt let down by both the story and the performance.
Unfortunately, none of the characters were likeable, except for possibly eccentric Aunt Hester. When everyone is either detestable, pathetic or unremarkably 2 dimensional I find it hard to enjoy the story. I never felt intrigued. I felt disgusted or disappointed in them all. Even Poirot, who I love, started getting on my nerves and Catchpoole's role irritated me. It didn't help that from time to time the narrator forgot to change his tone or pitch for the various characters.
Unfortunately the story was not that appealing either and perhaps a bit more obvious than the author thought it would be. The only "twist" was the revelation of an additional murder which seemed thrown in at the end as a means to provide a reason for another. Seemed a bit of a cheat. I don't want to say more for fear of spoiling the ending more than I may have.
I am so so sorry to be writing a bad review.
