Histoire
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Description
S. A. Chakraborty continues the sweeping adventure begun in The City of Brass - "the best adult fantasy I’ve read since The Name of the Wind" (number-one New York Times best-selling author Sabaa Tahir) - conjuring a world where djinn summon flames with the snap of a finger and waters run deep with old magic; where blood can be dangerous as any spell and a clever con artist from Cairo will alter the fate of a kingdom.
Nahri’s life changed forever the moment she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Whisked from her home in Cairo, she was thrust into the dazzling royal court of Daevabad - and quickly discovered she would need all her grifter instincts to survive there.
Now, with Daevabad entrenched in the dark aftermath of a devastating battle, Nahri must forge a new path for herself. But even as she embraces her heritage and the power it holds, she knows she’s been trapped in a gilded cage, watched by a king who rules from the throne that once belonged to her family - and one misstep will doom her tribe....
Meanwhile, Ali has been exiled for daring to defy his father. Hunted by assassins, adrift on the unforgiving copper sands of his ancestral land, he is forced to rely on the frightening abilities the marid - the unpredictable water spirits - have gifted him. But in doing so, he threatens to unearth a terrible secret his family has long kept buried.
As a new century approaches and the djinn gather within Daevabad's towering brass walls for celebrations, a threat brews unseen in the desolate North. It’s a force that would bring a storm of fire straight to the city’s gates...and one that seeks the aid of a warrior trapped between worlds, torn between a violent duty he can never escape and a peace he fears he will never deserve.

epic and masterful. still wouldn't recommend it
Epic, but with a caveat. The writing is masterful, the characters are marvelously created and the world crafted to a shade of reality that you might expect if you were able to go through the looking glass.
However, this is a complete 180 from the first book. If you were expecting a continuation in the romance, magic and the lightness, get ready to be jolted.
It was not at all what I was expecting and whilst I knew the undertone of the series was political allegory, I did not expect the visceral horror, war, murder and disturbed psyche of those who could do such heinous things.
Yet, that of course is the point though isn't it? It is to point a light on the extreme circumstances, culture, conditioning, blind acceptance, loyalty and fear that create beings who go along with whatever they are told. Who blindly do as they are bid. Who unquestioningly take on the ethics of those in charge. Whether that is the government, royalty, family and even your caregivers.
And in this, it succeeds in a way that many do not.
However, for me getting through this novel was a challenge.
Even though I had the audiobook (and thank goodness because I purchased the UK edition of the books with intention and then it came with a font size and style that I could not read even with glasses on! Just a heads up for you.)
But to be honest, this is not something you're going to listen to when you're prepping your dinner.
It's hard.
It's thought-provoking. It's gory. And you're going to get attached to characters you weren't expecting only to have them sliced away from you.
I think it is masterful writing, but definitely not something I would ever read again. Although it is part of a trilogy I don't see that I could recommend it as a stand alone unless you are truly enraptured by the psyche of compliance and violence. I suppose if you were writing a thesis on such things it would be excellent. I suppose if you were a writer in that genre, it would also be excellent.
Yet to be a gentle being who wants a promise of being pulled into another world for inspiration and joy, like myself, you likely would not enjoy it.

Truly a world of magic
I read this book immediately after The City of Brass, and it did not disappoint. This is an amazing world that Chakraborty has created and following the characters through yet another series of brutal events added to their development without diminishing their suffering. The themes that I saw deepened in this second book were: how hard it is to work together to build something and how easy it is to destroy; the harm that is done when the parent's generation holds tightly onto their own power instead of giving it over to their children. I am looking forward to reading the finale of this stupendous trilogy, but am waiting until I have 28 hours of free time. WOW!

I was worried it might not be as good as the first but it was almost better the rollercoster especially the end I guessed a few things but it really threw me for a loop with all the events I’ll be reading the next after this. (Spoiler ish! I am now shipping narhi with Ali my favourite characters both Dara makes me facepalm repeating the same mistakes) overall just enjoyed it.

One of my favourite books
I read the book and in anticipation of empire of gold I listened to the audiobook. I love the characters and the world she has built. Thanks for writing a story from another time, influenced by a culture so different from my own. The characters are complicated and interesting and the plot feels juicy, but not forced or outlandish. I enjoy that an effort was made for themes regarding greater humanity to be explored and the substance was not confined to romance or girl power stereotypes. I would love to see this story get the HBO treatment.

Entertaining and thought provoking
This started at a run and never stopped. This was both action packed and a great escape book while being thought provoking with its politics and discussions of bigotry and race relations.

Plucky
Definitely a set up for book three. Am enjoying it but hoping it will not go past book three. Liked the story, am not particularly impressed by the narrator. She did a super job for the most part, but I am tired of narrators mangling consonants. ‘Didn’t’ is not generally pronounced dinnit yet that seems to be the new normal. All in all I would read more from this author and still listened to a book narrated by this particular narrator.

Great Story
I fell in love with the world that S.A. Chakraborty has created, The City of Brass was a book I could not put down.
This book is also just great but, it stuffers from a bit of bulk in the middle that hurt the experience a bit, but the last 25% of it just grabbed me and would not let go. I can’t wait till the next book!

It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, especially if they don’t have an open mind, but this story is a beautiful tale that interweaves Islamic history with fantastic stories. I am excited to read thing third book when it’s released. Here’s hoping.

Most of it dragged on and in and was unconvincing until the end.
Loved the first book. The second book, however, dragged and only picked up towards the end.
The writer does not do a convincing job of writing politics. Most of the major characters seemed either whiney (the female protagonist) OR just not credible.
For instance there is ill feelings between one of the major players and his family, and yet the reason for the animosity between that character and his family did not seem credible to me whatsoever. I had a very difficult time believing that particular character’s sibling would turn on that character, and the catalyst for this change was simply not strong enough to be believable.
As a result those interactions were comedic due to the melodrama of the forced or contrived conflict in that sibling relationship. Towards the end there’s a sudden change in attitudes between these characters that again is really not supported by the character development in the book. Frankly it was annoying.
There were a lot of interesting complex political scenarios introduced that had great potential for great writing, but that were dealt with in a far too idealistic and naive manner, that again I found entirely unrealistic. There’s a review by some magazine that compares these books to the political intrigue found in the Game of Thrones books by George RR Martin, which I found hilariously wanting. I assure you this series does not even begin to compare to George RR Martin’s writings.
Overall the story dragged so much that it took me months to finish it. I nearly returned it and only finished because the narrator was fantastic, but the story so slow and unrealistic that I mostly used it to fall asleep to at night. As a result it was painstaking slow to make progress or headway with the book. There were a couple chapters alone that it took me a month to endure nightly attempts to finish before falling asleep due to boredom.
I was, however, pleasantly surprised when towards the end of the book the author FINALLY came to her own and wrote as intriguingly as she did in her first book.
Hope

My fav new fantasy writer
The detail of Ms.Chakraborty’s conceived world is incredible. You can close your eyes as your listening to Soneela’s calm voice and imagine yourself walking the streets of Daevabad alongside daevas, shafit and djinn. The politics of Daevabad are also spot on. In war, no one is innocent, yet both sides believe they’re justified in committing horrible atrocities because the other side has committed horrible atrocities. It becomes a bloody, tragic cycle and in the end both sides have equally as much blood on their hands. I like that there’s not a clear cut “good side” and “bad side” in the djinn/shafit/Daeva war, it makes it much more realistic. This is a beautiful work of fantasy, my only complaint is that I have to wait for the next book to find out what happens next because it does end with quite a cliffhanger.

Masterfully written
I usually always want a book I really like to become a movie but not this one. The author has done such a great job of taking you into the unknown and completely believing in this world he created that a movie could never do justice to it. The narrator also does a great job bringing it to life.
At its cutest it is a mix of Aladin with Prince of Persia (yes, the game) and at its best a satire of how humanity has behaved.

political drama with minimal magic
I struggled to focus on this story which is never an issue for me (I finish 4-5 books a week on average).

A satisfying sequel
I thoroughly enjoyed the narrator and the story. Oftentimes "Book 2" in a trilogy is the weak link of setup from the opening novel that snagged our attention to the resolution in book 3 that ties everything together. That was not my experience with Kingdom of Copper. While it did a great job of furthering character growth and rising tensions for the overarching plotline, it also felt like a grand tale in itself instead of just a middle piece.
