Description

In this debut novel and series starter, the last member of a murdered House searches for a missing nobleman, and uncovers clues about his own tortured past.

Rune Saint John, the last child of the fallen Sun Court, is hired to search for Lady Judgment's missing son, Addam, on New Atlantis, the island city where the Atlanteans moved after ordinary humans destroyed their original home.

With his companion and bodyguard, Brand, he questions Addam's relatives and business contacts through the highest ranks of the nobles of New Atlantis. But as they investigate, they uncover more than a missing man: a legendary creature connected to the secret of the massacre of Rune's Court. In looking for Addam, can Rune find the truth behind his family's death and the torments of his past?

Amazing!!

Josh Hurley did an amazing job bringing these characters to life and I hope he does the future books in this series as well. The story grabbed me from the very start and kept hold of me the whole way through. The pacing was perfect with moments of sarcasm and wit helping to balance out all the feels. I can't wait for the rest of this series to come out!

Just Okay

The story certainly has a different premise and makes a good stab at a crime plot. The back story is worth expanding. One of its downfalls is the non-stop swearing, which is boring enough to read and annoying to listen to. That, along with the long drawn out fight scenes whose only purpose seems to enhance the word count, detracted from the book The plot was interesting enough to stay with the story, but I won't bother with the sequel. The performer might have been better had he more to work with.

Total crap

Fifteen minutes listening to f#ck this, f#ck that, f#cking this, etc etc etc.
Totally unnecessary to the story, whatever the story is supposed to be.
One author to add to my Do not read list.

The only positive thing is it was on sale.

Holy shit that was so good!!!

I’m going to level. I found this book because I was looking for happy gay stories. Gay media is full of tragic horrible stories, and I hate it. Then I found this. The sample made it sound weird. The reviews weren’t detailed so I wasn’t sure about it. I took a chance. This story if freaking awesome! Yes there is a side gay romance in the book. The main story though is of heroism defeating the bad guy who is doing ding messed up shit with his magic. This world is super awesome and I loved the mystery of who the bad guy was and the question of what really all going on behind the scenes. I can’t wait for the next one!!!

Surprisingly different and chalk full of sass!

4.5 stars!

Book Content Warning: talk of past sexual assault.

This was surprisingly different and chalk full of sass! I had a lot of tropes lined up in my head for a story like this, and in steered clear of a lot of them.

The world and plot held my interest the whole time, and there wasn't any unneeded info dumping. I loved the characters and their relationships. They were all sassy, but in different ways.

I was sure this would be an mm romance between the mc and his bodyguard, but it wasn't and their friendship gave me warm and fuzzy feelings. They'll sass each other one minutes and hug the next...while sassing each other, I loved it.

Also, there was a good found family feel to it, with the all the characters which is one of my biggest weaknesses.

I eagerly await the next book.

Very good, but not excellent

I found this book while searching for an LGBT fantasy where the plot was not driven by the character’s queer identity. To this end, the book was exactly what I hoped it would be. As a big fan of other fantasy gurus (e.g. Sanderson, Rothfuss, etc.), I found the world building to be ultimately satisfying and intriguing, while perhaps not quite at the caliber of the legends. I also thought that the reader was phenomenal and brought each character to life.

However, I found The Last Sun missing the mark in two major respects: the balance of characters, and the dialogue.

First, the character cast was nearly exclusively male. On some level, this may be expected when the main character is gay (i.e. no females as potential love interests), but I think it felt unnecessary. There were characters whom I enjoyed, but could have easily been instead a female voice to the story. (I’m a gay male btw if that offers context to my perspective.) This obviously didn’t ruin the book for me, but it took me out of the story at times. I want strong gay characters, but the sausage fest was a little overwhelming.

Second, the dialogue had strong moments, but was a lot of times very cringe. I didn’t love the banter between Rune and Brand mostly because I didn’t find it witty, and it just gave second hand embarrassment. I found much of the dialogue trite, and I think the beauty of the writing comes through much better during the moments of observation.

I would recommend this book. If nothing else, it is a great example of things to do right, and a better example of things to avoid.

A fun ride with some flaws and trigger warnings

So, the good first. This book is a real thrill ride, with perilous situations, near-death experiences supernatural threats, and high-octane magical combat going on constantly. The idea of New Atlantis is an interesting one, and allows for some lore that's a little different than a lot of other UF out there. The hero, Rune, is a pretty good protagonist, being fairly likeable and not making idiotic decisions. The supporting cast, including his bodyguard Brand, make for interesting characters as well. The plot is engaging and has a few neat twists.

Now the bad.

For one thing, there's some serious trigger warnings about rape that need to be attached to this book. Rune has a few flashes back to a night he was gang-raped by several men, and there's some rather brutal imagery to go along with it. One remark in particular near the end of the novel turned my stomach.

The other problem I had with it is... Okay. I get that this is an M/M book, and I don't have a problem with that. There's a fair amount of good-looking dudes flirting with each other and hitting on each other and admiring their respective good looks, and there's a minor amount of M/M sexual content. All of that is fine. What I had a problem with is *there are almost no female characters.* I wouldn't expect one to be a love interest in an M/M book, but there should at least be one or two who have a little bit of relevance as, you know, CHARACTERS. There's a grand total of three of them who have any impact on the plot at all; of those three, one dies ten minutes in, one exists solely to give Rune a mission, and one is the girlfriend of a minor character. If this were a movie, they'd get maybe five minutes on screen combined. It's even more jarring considering that early on, Rune explains that bisexual polygamy is the norm for relationships among the Atlanteans, yet all we see are men jealously struggling to be Rune's monogamous boyfriend. None of this would be a problem in a gay literotica, but in a book that has an actual plot and isn't just smut, it's really weird and glaring.

Anyway. I didn't hate it, and I found the constant wizardry battles pretty entertaining. It's worth a read, but just know what you're getting into ahead of time.

I don’t know what to do??

This audiobook was so good. The world that was created was spectacular. I’m dying to know what happens next. I usually wait until the next book would be made into an audiobook to enjoy the story but idk I’m seriously considering seeing if the next book is out.
The narration was fabulous. Hurley made the characters come alive.
I will say, it was hard to hear about the sexual assault. That is my only warning to any one thinking of listening to this audiobook.

This was such an amazing surprise!

I encourage everyone to take a chance and read this book! I didnt know what to think at first, since it was a new author, but Im so glad I got to experence this story.
The magic, characters, world, and plot were all great! I was a little confused by some of the magic and world details at first, however that didnt last long and the characters more than carried me through it.
The plot was great, and left me craving the next book. It seems like this is only the beging and I cant wait for more!!

Holy shit.

I don’t know what I was expecting when I bought this book, but definitely not that. Easily, easily one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. World-building was flawless. Characters were rich and complex and fascinating. The plot was incredibly engaging and the larger arch of the series integrated seamlessly. Josh Hurley’s reading brought the characters to life perfectly. 10/10, get this book.

Unfinished

I'm torn on this. The writing and plot I liked but there are so many holes in this story. Perhaps there's a prequel or something that explains how this world came to be that I haven't read that would help with backstory.

My concern doesn't end there though. There's a major conflict throughout the story that doesn't feel resolved and not in the "to be continued" sense. I don't really know why the events occurred and it doesn't feel like the hero has a clue to follow up on.

It’s like the Dresden Files with a gay protagonist

Upfront this is a adventure-mystery in an alternate modern magical Earth. At its heart it is an excellent representation of a gay hero in fantasy fiction driven by realistic needs and the struggle to survive a dangerous, fantastic land.

The world is rich, the characters are developed, the dialog feels authentic, and the plot and intrigue stand well on their own without giving too much away. Readers familiar with role-playing games can enjoy how magic is presented in the story. Overall the author does an excellent job setting the stage for an immersive series with good potential for growth.

If you enjoy the Dresden Files but want more gay characters you should definitely check this one out!
