Description

Randidly Ghosthound felt lost and alone even before the System transformed the Earth. Before every person had to deal with the sudden presence of levels, skills, monsters, and the very real possibility of death....

Due to unusual circumstances, Randidly starts in an isolated dungeon far beyond his level, forced to rely on the mysterious Traveler Shal in order to learn and survive with the dangerous new status quo for his world.

But survive he does, only to leave the dungeon and discover that while he experienced several hellish months in the dungeon, only half a day passed on Earth. Randidly's capabilities are now more than enough to help build a small enclave of survivors, but that doesn't mean balancing his sense of responsibility against the plots of an unfriendly town will be easy.

And although he doesn’t know it, he needs to prepare. Because the System has sent down a tribulation, which waits in the shadows and monitors his every move....

loved it

This book is great. listened to a lot of lit rpg books and I tend to zone out at parts. the skills and stats on this book are a little bit extra and the only parts i zoned out for. when their is so many skills and stats it's hard to see the relevance in them when half of them go up a few points. other than that the book has a few graphic moments that are pretty tense and well narrated as they were written. its hard to stop listening to a book like this. the main characters name, I thought it was dumb at first but I grew to like it as it is his real name and they address how strange it is.

all this book is missing is a little humor to round it out. I suppose there is a couple moments that made me chuckle but it was rare.

story gets a 4/5 as skills are a little extra for me, minor lack of humor always bums me out, and there's something else that I can't put my finger on. I definitely recommend this.

Stats, stats, and more stats.

Story overall was good but a large portion was taken up with an overview of the protagonists stats.

unbearable

Who leaves these reviews? How does this book have a 4.5* average? I read about 50 litrpg books and this is hands down the worst by a wide margin. I've been an audible member for so many years and this is the first title I've ever returned.
So a few things about the book. The mc is a whiny dude with a below average iq and questionable moral standards. He piles up a ridiculous number of completely disjointed skills with no synergies or even a thought in that direction, which translates into a boring 5 straight minutes every time the author decides to get through the stat sheet again. I couldn't care less what skill evolved another level because it meant nothing considering that there are 100 other skills at various levels. The mc keeps mentioning how he's so worried about his 2 friends (a guy and a girl who, btw, are a couple) and as an afterthought he's also wondering about his parents. There's no back story to explain why I should care about anyone. Tbh I couldn't care about the mc let alone anyone else. I clenched my teeth and suffered through 38 chapters hoping for some spark but the story is just braindead. I've had enough.
The performance was great. I feel sorry for the narrator. It couldn't have been a pleasant experience having to read through the whole thing.

got better as the story progressed

i liked the combination of litrpg and a post apocalyptic dystopian world. personally, too much stats just feels like filler. but a lot of litrpg fans enjoy that, so i do not feel like it hurt the story too much. i will definitely continue with the second book.

MC becomes increasingly unlikable

Got to chapter 55 before giving up.

I enjoyed the start of the story before the MC left the first dungeon. Nice man against environment tension, and the harsh but ultimately caring relationship he develops with his mentor was engaging.

But after that the MC feels overpowered and aimless. Treats the people around him as disposable, but never seems to get around to actually *disposing* of them to seek out something he actually is invested in.

Teenage incel’s power fantasy

DNF at chapter 33. I was hoping for a slightly silly good time based on the name, this was not that. After all who could take a guy named ‘Randidly Ghosthound’ seriously?

1. No one mentions how ridiculous his name is. He calls himself ‘The Ghosthound’ almost from the beginning of the book and people think it’s… cool?

2. He’s always talking about his ‘primal urge for violence’ which is alarming. The author views this as a normal thing that was just suppressed before the system.

3. Treatment of the women… yikes. Okay so I DNF ed before things could get fleshed out, but so far the women are treated as resources to be stolen or protected and not much else.

4. I’m not one to complain about systems when reading litrpg but there are so many stats that I did frequently zone out and miss what progression was happening. I probably would have kept reading if that was the only issue though.

Look just reread Dungeon Crawler Carl or He who fights with monsters, is what I’m saying.

MC’s name

I can’t get over the fact that nobody in the story is mentioning how Randidly Ghosthound is such a cringey name even in pre-system standards. When everybody just started calling the MC the Ghosthound I can’t anymore. Coupled with the fact that the MC is always saying that he needs to do something about a problem but kept acting opposite of a solution, I couldn’t finish this story.
