“Dazzling. . . The Names is startlingly joyful. . . Knapp tirelessly and beautifully replicates not just loss and grief but endless rebirth and delight.”—The Washington Post

“Elegant. . . this is a wholly original work.”—People Magazine "Book of the Week"

“A magnificent novel, thrumming with life in all its pain and precariousness, yet suffused with the glorious possibilities of love and redemption.”—Geraldine Brooks, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Horse

The extraordinary novel that asks: Can a name change the course of a life?

In the wake of a catastrophic storm, Cora sets off with her nine-year-old daughter, Maia, to register her son's birth. Her husband, Gordon, a local doctor, respected in the community but a terrifying and controlling presence at home, intends for her to name the infant after him. But when the registrar asks what she'd like to call the child, Cora hesitates...

Spanning thirty-five years, what follows are three alternate and alternating versions of Cora's and her young son's lives, shaped by her choice of name. In richly layered prose, The Names explores the painful ripple effects of domestic abuse, the messy ties of family, and the possibilities of autonomy and healing.

With exceptional sensitivity and depth, Knapp draws us into the story of one family, told through a prism of what-ifs, causing us to consider the "one . . . precious life" we are given. The book’s brilliantly imaginative structure, propulsive storytelling, and emotional, gut-wrenching power are certain to make The Names a modern classic.

I came to this novel as a recommendation and while I always enjoyed the narrator the early part of the Book almost scared me off as it felt with a difficult issue.
I just finished the book and I will now go back and read it again. I look to checking out the argos mentioned that were inspirational for the novel.

and now I recreate with whether to revise my already excellent choice of 'Isola' for my book club pick for 2025-26 to this book.
You will enjoy it.

Such an interesting story, outstanding narration

Interesting structure of three stories unfolding, but this book could have used another set of eagle eyes for flawed details. A final edit to filter out implausibilities would have rounded out literary perfection, for me anyway. How can a woman cooped up without contact with the outside world for decades possibly know about pilates? Why would she not have practiced her ballet moves from the distant past to keep in shape instead? Author missed a great chance here to show a delicate connection with her past. Great narration though.

There is nothing that I would change. An achingly beautiful page-turner from start to finish.

beautiful narration, incredible character development, this book and performance is poetry

One of Indigo’s most anticipated books of the year, Florence Knapp’s debut The Names is a work of art. Beautiful and gut-wrenching, through three alternating stories the author explores; can a name determine one’s fate? To say Knapp’s writing is exquisite would be an understatement. A breathtaking, brutally resilient and tender book that will stick with me for a while. By far one of the best books I’ve read this year!

Thank you Viking / Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

An absolute masterpiece!
