AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AND READ WITH JENNA PICK—A WORD-OF-MOUTH HIT THAT BEGS TO BE SHARED

LONGLISTED FOR THE ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL

“Dazzling.” —The Washington Post

“A magnificent novel.” —Geraldine Brooks, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Horse

The extraordinary novel that asks: Can a name change the course of a life?

In the wake of a catastrophic storm, Cora sets off with her nine-year-old daughter, Maia, to register her son's birth. Her husband, Gordon, respected in the community but a controlling presence at home, intends for her to follow a long-standing family tradition and name the baby after him. But when faced with the decision, Cora hesitates...

Spanning thirty-five years, what follows are three alternate and alternating versions of their lives, shaped by Cora’s last-minute choice of name. In richly layered prose, The Names explores the painful ripple effects of domestic abuse, the messy ties of family, and the possibilities of autonomy and healing.

Through a prism of what-ifs, Florence Knapp invites us to consider the "one . . . precious life" we are given. Full of hope, this is the story of three names, three versions of a life, and the infinite possibilities that a single decision can spark. It is the story of one family and love’s endless capacity to endure, no matter what fate has in store.

The book’s brilliantly imaginative structure, propulsive storytelling, and emotional power are certain to make The Names a modern classic.

Interesting structure of three stories unfolding, but this book could have used another set of eagle eyes for flawed details. A final edit to filter out implausibilities would have rounded out literary perfection, for me anyway. How can a woman cooped up without contact with the outside world for decades possibly know about pilates? Why would she not have practiced her ballet moves from the distant past to keep in shape instead? Author missed a great chance here to show a delicate connection with her past. Great narration though.

Such a clever idea about how 3 scenarios can be so different, dependent on how a baby is named and how that affects the lives of the family.
I loved this book how it is written and how it was read.
It has joined my top audio book collection which includes Eleanor oliphant is alright, All the colours of the dark, A River is waiting, Daisy jones and the six,

Written with such an indepth insight into individual emotions and thoughts

I wasn't sure what to think when it first started... but wow. all three stories so different and heart breaking in their own way.
only complain is that I would have liked more variation in the narrators voice with some characters.
highly recommend if you are looking for something different.

thought provoking

This book was devastatingly beautiful. I cannot believe how effortlessly the author managed to build so many different people with intertwining lives. My heart aches for Cora, and will continue to do so through 2026.

My Favourite Book of 2025
