“A beautiful tale, awash in the seasalt and sweat, bait and beer of the Havana coast. It tells a fundamental human truth: in a volatile world, from our first breath to our last wish, through triumphs and pitfalls both trivial and profound, what sustains us, ultimately, is hope.” —The Guardian

The last of his novels Ernest Hemingway saw published, The Old Man and the Sea has proved itself to be one of the most enduring works of American fiction. The story of a down-on-his-luck Cuban fisherman and his supreme ordeal—a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream—has been cherished by generations of readers.

Hemingway takes the timeless themes of courage in the face of adversity and personal triumph won from loss and transforms them into a magnificent twentieth-century classic. First published in 1952, this hugely popular tale confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature.©1952 Ernest Hemingway; (P)2006 Simon and Schuster Inc. It was an alright story, if a bit long winded. This is fitting given the fact it's told by an old man. While it's a short story, it feels longer than it is. The narrator was fine, given what he had to read. It can make for a bedtime story to help you sleep.

Don’t expect a thriller, but if you want a very perfect and relaxing story with metaphors you can pull out, there’s a reason why it’s a classic

Beautiful story

I had never read anything by Hemmingway, but I had always been told he was good writer. His attention to detail, and his description of the old man and his knowledge of the sea was very gripping. The story itself is very simple, but the skill of the story telling is great. Sutherland's narration was very fitting.

There's a reason it's a classic.

This is so his style, short and direct. He tells us what the sees, feels, smells, tastes, and even dreams.
