Description

The Jasmine Throne has been hailed as a series opener that will "undoubtedly reshape the landscape of epic fantasy for years to come" (Booklist, starred). Now, award-winning author Tasha Suri's provocative and powerful Burning Kingdoms trilogy continues with The Oleander Sword.

The prophecy of the nameless god—the words that declared Malini the rightful empress of Parijatdvipa—has proven a blessing and curse. She is determined to claim the throne that fate offered her. But even with the strength of the rage in her heart and the army of loyal men by her side, deposing her brother is going to be a brutal and bloody fight.

The power of the deathless waters flows through Priya’s blood. Thrice born priestess, Elder of Ahiranya, Priya’s dream is to see her country rid of the rot that plagues it: both Parijatdvipa's poisonous rule, and the blooming sickness that is slowly spreading through all living things. But she doesn’t yet understand the truth of the magic she carries.

Their chosen paths once pulled them apart. But Malini and Priya's souls remain as entwined as their destinies. And they soon realize that coming together is the only way to save their kingdom from those who would rather see it burn—even if it will cost them.

made politics and war fun!

Despite what my caption may imply, this book is written and performed beautifully and the topics are treated with the gravity you'd expect.
Just like the first one I really enjoy fantasy set in an ancient world that ISN'T based on ancient Europe. it's a baseline of freshness that only gets built on by the rich world and religions and characters.
Speaking of characters, all of them, even the side characters feel like real people. The big bad is a believable type of evil, one you see in the real world often.

The only thing I'll say is I wish the best friend character had more of a life of her own, her identity is pretty much entirely based on her relationship with Priya. We learned in the first book that she also likes girls and I saw an opportunity for her to have her own love interest but it wasn't expanded on, in fact that character (the potential love interest) wasn't mentioned again at all so I'm thinking this will probably be made relevant in the next book 🤞

Overall I'm really enjoying Tasha Suri's writing and have recommended this series to literally everyone who's ever even looked at a book.
Please write like the wind Tasha, I can't wait for the next one!
