Description

Chronological Issues but overall a great listen.
The story itself is great but when compared chronologically to some of the earlier books some major events seem to be in the wrong place. If I am not mistaken, Magnus appears on Terra and the wolves are dispatched to Proserpo even before any inkling of Horus being a traitor surfaces. Aside from that however I really enjoyed the story and the detailed look inside how Astropaths work.

One of the best
Easily one of the best books in the HH series imo. Right up there with the first 5 or 6. Solid plot, surprising insights into aspects of the saga that are not found elsewhere. Loved it.

Flawed but Insightful
Granted there’s a discrepancy in timelines… but if you can look past that, there’s some great insights into astropaths, the aftermath of Magnus’ intrusion, and an unexpected bit of Thunder Warriors lore.

One of the best Horus Heresy books
This book will take you to Terra and the characters, plot and narration are perfectly executed in this story. I didn't know as much about Astropaths or Navigators and this book provides insight on them while also bringing a harrowing mix of people and events together for one hell of a ride!

Timeline Error
This book breaks the heresy timeline. If Magnus' warning came after the the Retribution fleet was deployed, the imperium would have already know about Horus. The orders to Russ before Prospero would have included that little bit of info so Horus shouldn't have been able to change Russ' orders.

Who was the editor who let them publish this?
Timeline all messed up. None of the actions in the book make sense. The characters are all paper thin garbage that no one cares about.
Characters that don't live longer than the book doing things that don't make sense in a timeline that is impossible and nonsensical.

pointless overhaul ?
I don't like writing reviews like this but this book is pointless. overall if you want to read the Horus Heresy novels you won't miss anything if you skip it.
Spoilers ahead. if you want a more in depth review. I'll start by saying I love Graham McNeil he wrote the best space marine books out there and I think he's one of the great in wh40k fiction. The characterization is good and the writing is also good. where does it falter ? the story... the story is, to be frank, absolutely boring and pointless. It doesn't serve anything in the grand story of the Horus Heresy. it revolves around an astropath on terra who got implanted with a secrets that everybody wants and in the end the big secret is that Horus will win of the emperor doesn't do anything in his power to stop it.... the first part of this book is a colossal waste of time before the actual plot begins and what follows, with the titular Outcast Dead, is basically a race to escape terra before the hounds finds them. Which will sound weird but doesn't go nearly far enough. In the end it feels that they escaped to go absolutely nowhere.
All of this to say, if you want to read everything in the Horus Heresy do it. If not skip this one
