Description

Matt, Liz, and Aster are now Tier 10.

That means it's time for the Pather tournament. There they will face people who are as strong as them for the first time.

But things are never easy.

With years of Luna's guidance they will have to compete twice. Once as themselves and again under a mask with restrictions meant to ensure they really are the strongest.

Don't miss Book 5 of this action-packed fantasy adventure that blends everything you love about LitRPG with Xianxia.

About the series: This is a mix between LitRPG and Xianxia. It's like a car that looks like a LitRPG with dungeons and skills, but the interior and engine are all Xianxia. It features a magic system and progression system that are logically and internally consistent, as well as realistic fight scenes and a rational MC.

A great rebound

After what I considered to be a fall flat book 4 of the series, this one knocks it out of the park. The progression was smooth and rewarding, and the setup for book six has me excited for it! This was a very good return to form.

Amazing

Gave me a headache in multiple places, brilliant work. Bringing everything from the previous books all into one massive bloodbath.

Narrator keeps yelling…why? But great books.

Let me start by saying. GREAT BOOK. I really want the next one.

The narrator sounds like a character in one of those sitcoms where he or she gets is excited to be in a play but when they read the lines they yell them in a stiff near monotone, like they are talking to someone across the street. This makes volume somewhat uneven.

For some actual facts: I measured the db variance between the narrator doing normal 3rd person narration and when he talks in the first person as a character. I measured a 7db to 10db variance, sometimes it’s “only” 5db between the two types of voicing. That’s way too much. And I don’t understand how an experienced narrator would make the choice of every character sounding like they are having a conversation with each other across a busy road.

Now, is it just me? I have never seen anyone else mention this, so maybe it’s a “me problem”. But I mention this because it absolutely impacts the listening experience which is what we are doing here. It’s both funny and annoying. Who talks like that? Who talks at the top of their lungs like they are inspecting a curious bug or thingamajig?

The books themselves are very good. The cultivation is pretty darn deep.

I do believe time scale is an issue, though it is one the author has a clear plan to handle. What I mean is that I feel like scale, length of time etc, is being used to increase the difficulty of the cultivation/training/growing and scale of the universe this is in. I’m concerned the author is painting himself into a corner since each level (and we are at level 10/11 now of 50), gets exponentially longer and harder. On one hand I absolutely love the scale, on the other I have no idea how the author plans to handle this scale as the series progresss without skipping things.

So, as you can see scale has been used as one of the methods of limiting the number of top level delvers by virtue of time and difficulty. That’s a cool concept but in practice will be interesting to see how the author contends with that. I love how in depth the process is. The crafting process manages to be very interesting sounding and not laborious to listen to.

I’m all in for this series and I have to say this book was more enjoyable in some respects than the last one, though the last one had some great highlights that enriches the characters. This one seemed more fun.

I hope the author keeps cranking out these books. They are enjoyable. Maybe he will consider finding a different narrator or work out the voicing of the character with the existing narrator so it gets better because it’s pretty ridiculous at this point. And this narrator has a great voice, it’s how he chooses to voice every single character in the first person that seems so unnecessarily over-the-top “yelly”.

This is what Book 4 was building too

For all the people who were crying about book 4 not having enough action or whatever their personal issue was. This book was able to be what it was because of the building blocks of the first four. A lot of the events in this book would have felt incredibly un earned without the set up of the last book.

feels stale, very boring most of the time.

hardly any crafting, and a tournament arc with nerf padding kid gloves on the whole time is not entertaining.

The absence of any real antagonists makes the narrative feel directionless. I want more rift experiments, crafting, and battles that mean something.
