Description

Ilea likes punching things. And eating.

Unfortunately, there aren’t too many career options for hungry brawlers. Instead, the plan is to quit her crappy fast-food job, go to college, and become a fully functioning member of society. Essentially—a fate worse than death.

So maybe it's lucky that she wakes up one day in a strange world where a bunch of fantasy monsters are trying to kill her?

On the bright side, "killing those monsters right back" is now a viable career path! For she soon discovers her new home runs on a set of game-like rules that will allow her to punch things harder than in her wildest dreams. Well, maybe not her wildest dreams, but it’s close.

With no quest to follow, no guide to show her the way, and no real desire to be a Hero—Ilea embarks on a journey to discover a world full of magic. Magic she can use to fight even bigger monsters.

She’s struggling to survive, has no idea what will happen next, and is loving every minute of it. Except, and sometimes also, when she’s poisoned and/or has set herself on fire. It’s complicated.

Listen to the story that took Royal Road by storm with more than 60 million views and counting.

Mostly good, but frustrating

Overall the setting is good, there is a good mix of funny, exciting etc. The mc is probably the biggest let down of the story. The author kind of abuses the mc, undermining core motivations and behaviour by injecting internal/mental conflict and artificially injecting reactions/emotions when convenient for the author. It just feels super fake and inconsistent with the rest of the character's behavior. Thankfully these moments aren't frequent, but when they come up they are incredibly frustrating.

The mc wants a challenge, likes to risk their life, and enjoys the adrenaline that comes with it... But whenever the mc does something and ends up in real danger or others are dying they suffer a sudden mental collapse. The char just feels fake. "I'm a badass, watch me push myself and be constantly in danger." Escape skills no problem haha. "Oh no, my life is actually in danger, people are dying." *whimper whimper mental trauma*Its just so inconsistent. It's the kind of situations where I really expected the char to push themselves and focus on getting out/winning/saving people/etc and then later on dealing with the consequences... Nightmares, guilt, renewed determination, etc in the aftermath. The mental collapse in the midst of what the mc allegedly draws strength from is just too disappointing and undermines everything the author represents the character to be.

There is quite a bit of stat//ability/level updates which are kind of disruptive, even if like the genre in general it gives a hard interpretation of advancement. When doing a big summary it takes long enough that my eyes glaze over and I can't focus on all the random data. This aspect of these stories is one where text is vastly superior, easy to bookmark and reference, easy to skip, easy to find a specific entry etc.

The advancement system itself is a little unclear and it's value is frequently undermined to let the mc stand out. And real changes of the advancements tend to happen with tiers. Making frequent updates only marginally useful as reference at best.

Not great

The whole book is little more than just punches and blinks and aimless wondering. Not much to hold it together. The author's attempts at conveying emotions are really hard to get through. The mc kills some thieves in self defence, starts crying out of nowhere then immediately thinks she should get a new haircut. I've finished the book and I'm still not sure about her character. Overly trustworthy and emotionally attached to people she saw only once although she doesn't spare them a second thought. I'd describe her as unhinged, definitely with significant mental issues.
The storyline has potential though. I'll listen to another one and see if it evolves into anything with substance before I decide.
The narrator did a good job overall. Sometimes she adds unnecessary fake chuckles which, instead of making the character sound lighthearted, add to her weird behavior. Also all male voices sound old so it feels awkward when she's hitting on every guy she meets. Turns out most of them are in their 30s so I'm not sure why they all sound like Gandalf.

Entertaining

The main is deffinately a female character written by a dude but otherwise the story is entertaining enough. My biggest issue is that she is supposed to be an intelligence and wisdom heavy build but she sure as hell doesn't act like it. If this was just a video game sure that is fine but seems a waste of the LitRPG genre to have stats that don't mean a thing to how a character acts.

A Great story, with few flaws

The novel is lighthearted without letting that get in the way of Character progression, however their are some growing pains from the transition into audio format, level gains, Dings, and stat blocks are spaced well but Large when they occur.

An amazing performance

This is arguably one of the best lit rpg's out there. Performance by the narrator was amazing.

Wow, the narrator has an incredible range.

First of all, this is a great book. Really enjoyed it. The quality of the writing is above some of the other LitRPG’s I’ve recently read, some of which are highly rated. I’m excited to start book 2 asap.

The narrator is amazing. I’m very picky about narration and IMHO most narrators make terrible choices with voices of the opposite sex. This one doesn’t. You have to assume that doing voices very different from their own will lead a narrator to certain creative choices/compromises, how well they can execute on this choice is what separates a good narrator from a great one. This is a great narrator. I haven’t hear any of her work before now, based on other reviews it seems she is well known for quality work. I’m happy to note those weren’t empty claims or based on quirky personal tastes by other listeners. I’ll be looking for more of her work.

Great start to this series.

She's a Thug.

So first things first. Just because something is popular doesn't make it good, and with the soulless products being churned out that people will mindlessly defend one would be forgiven for seeing the mindless reviews of nothing but praise as a red flag for the actual quality.
I'm happy to inform you this is not the case. There are a few minor and not so minor gripes. Over all its certainly worth the purchase.
The main character is a thug. She's not particularly bright and has a few character flaws, but they make her very human. Unlike a lot of OPMC Isekai characters, I could buy this was actually a person. Understand this is an OPMC Story. The idea of things being stronger than her is quickly undermined by her winning everything.
The narrator is great, although the way she says Ping is beyond aggravating the first time it comes up, and you will hear it a lot throughout the book, it is easily the biggest grip. Though early on you wouldn't think so, when she acquires 4 class levels in both classes and all of her skills. You quickly come to loath the sound.

Reminds me of a Japanese Isekai anime

Not the top echelon of writing. However, better than amateur writers such as the author of the hunger games. If you enjoy following the journey it's a great series. If you nit-pick every detail this may not be the book for you. If you read the cradle book series, you'll likely enjoy this too. Lots of fun events, some comedic moments, the dungeons are pretty cool, and the protagonist has a will of titanium. Oh also, the evolution/upgrade descriptions were really cool!

Given that I only had two major issues with the storyline. The author did a pretty good job of everything else. But I am also being less critical as I don't think this series was meant to rival series such as The War of the Spider Queen (or similar) which would absolutely trump this series.

Couple flaws in book 1:
- The protagonist goes solo at the beginning for a long time. Gets a bit boring when there's no other characters being developed. A strange choice. But very forgivable given that overall I'm enjoying the series.
- Some traumatic issues regarding the nature of the protagonists origin gets explained away in an unconvincing manner. I think never getting upset about that really makes the protagonist seem void of human feelings. The story could have touched on the protagonist struggling to find someone to confide and trust in; to tell her story. I think doing-so would have made the story more touching. For awhile she's happy go-lucky with this newfound freedom. But in-reality those feelings would have eventually ended resulting in some sort of a mental breakdown. It's not like the plot completely avoids the issue, but only mentions it in brief and moves on which isn't good enough imo.
- How come the protagonist never questions the voice in her head and it's weird god/omnipotent-like behaviour? I guess this is a LitRPG and probably not something the reader is supposed to question.
