A serial killer is burning people alive in the Lake District's prehistoric stone circles. He leaves no clues and the police are helpless. When his name is found carved into the charred remains of the third victim, disgraced detective Washington Poe is brought back from suspension and into an investigation he wants no part of . . .
Reluctantly partnered with the brilliant, but socially awkward, civilian analyst, Tilly Bradshaw, the mismatched pair uncover a trail that only he is meant to see. The elusive killer has a plan and for some reason Poe is part of it.
As the body count rises, Poe discovers he has far more invested in the case than he could have possibly imagined. And in a shocking finale that will shatter everything he's ever believed about himself, Poe will learn that there are things far worse than being burned alive ...

The characters are trope-tastic, but still likable. Not the most comfortable with how Tilly is written, but I'll spare the speech. The infantalised genius thing isn't my favorite. It could be a lot worse as at least it is balanced by bravery and resilience (as well as impossible genius: literally impossible. Google tells me there are only two people currently living who have been tested to have an IQ of over 200. Not even the folks we commonly think of when we think "genius". It's not a thing. I'm sorry, I'm harping on, but it just felt silly. Author could have said like 172 or something and it would have still been shockingly high, but still in the realm of the possible). Also, I hate hate hate it when adults stick out their tongues. So much. So when Tilly does it, my skin crawls. That's a reader issue, obviously, but still, it goes with my apprehensions with the way she's written.
Ok, back on track, here. It was a fun, cinematic, pleasantly gruesome mystery with an interesting solution and a satisfying ending. The big reveal about something in the male protagonist's personal life was eye-rollingly hokey, but it worked. It helped to solidify the reader's investment in the series.
I enjoyed it.
