Histoire
Documentary filmmaker Alice Lindstedt has been obsessed with the vanishing residents of the old mining town, dubbed “The Lost Village”, since she was a little girl. In 1959, her grandmother’s entire family disappeared in this mysterious tragedy, and ever since, the unanswered questions surrounding the only two people who were left - a woman stoned to death in the town center and an abandoned newborn - have plagued her. She’s gathered a small crew of friends in the remote village to make a film about what really happened.

Histoire
A group of close friends gathers at a secluded cabin in the wintry mountains of Colorado for a final holiday hurrah. Instead, it may be their last stand. First a massive blizzard leaves them marooned. Then the more chilling realization: Something is lurking in the woods, watching them, waiting.... Now a weekend of family, friends, and fun has turned into a test of love and loyalty in the face of inhuman horrors. The only hope for those huddled inside is to fight - tooth and nail, bullet and blade - for their lives. Otherwise, they’ll end up like the monsters’ other victims: bright pools of blood on glittering snow, screams lost in the vast mountains.

Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Description
A gripping folk-horror thriller from the author of The Ritual
One million years of evolution didn't change our nature. Nor did it bury the horrors predating civilization. Ancient rites, old deities, and savage ways can reappear in the places you least expect.
Lifestyle journalist Katrine escaped past traumas by moving to a coast renowned for seaside holidays and natural beauty. But when a vast hoard of human remains and prehistoric artifacts is discovered in nearby Brickburgh, a hideous shadow engulfs her life.
Helene, a disillusioned lone parent, lost her brother, Lincoln, six years ago. Disturbing subterranean noises he recorded prior to vanishing, draw her to Brickburgh's caves. A site where early humans butchered each other across 60,000 years. Upon the walls, images of their nameless gods remain.
Amidst rumors of drug plantations and new sightings of the mythical red folk, it also appears that the inquisitive have been disappearing from this remote part of the world for years. A rural idyll where outsiders are unwelcome and where an infernal power is believed to linger beneath the earth. A timeless super-normal influence that only the desperate would dream of confronting. But to save themselves and those they love, and to thwart a crimson tide of pitiless barbarity, Kat and Helene are given no choice. They were involved and condemned before they knew it.
The Reddening is an epic story of folk and prehistoric horrors written by Adam Nevill, the author of The Ritual, Last Days, No One Gets Out Alive, and the three times winner of the August Derleth Award for best horror novel.

great concept, I love all things supernatural, and the prehistoric creepy beasts are right up my alley. I feel like this would be a great horror film if done correctly. I wish there had been more of the creatures involved, and more about them specifically. I was less entranced by the typical cult behaviour of the humans, and I saw the ending with Kat coming from a mile away. very few twists and turns, nothing shocking. narration was good. I think it has the potential to be fascinating, but it just wasn't. at least not for me.

Terrifyingly awesome
This book scared the crap out of me, to the point where I actually couldn't finish it. Neville doesn't rely solely on gore and shock, he puts the characters into extremely intense and uncomfortable situations. For instance, in one scene they can't run or make a sound, and have no choice but to silently watch horrific events unfold before them. An investigation of a creepy cult turns into a super natural nightmare world

Wrong Narrator
The narrator should have practiced. His voice is nice but it’s American and the story is set in Devon. He tried on an accent here and there, but not consistently. Mostly I was super distracted by his mispronunciation of many, many words. I actually found myself correcting him out loud, because I was frustrated at the interruption of the flow of the story. Definitely the wrong narrator.

Nevill never disappoints...
However, this narrator was wrong in every way possible for this novel. Female leads should be given female voices. Furthermore, this took place in the UK. Why was an American man, who only did accents occasionally, chosen to narrate this title, which followed two women from the UK? The story told is good enough to overlook this detail but the narrator will likely turn off a great many people who try this book. I advise potential listeners to try to stick with it. Your persistence will be rewarded.

Would be Better with a Different Narrator
The story itself was alright. I stayed engaged and entertained until the end. The narrator, however, left much to be desired. Sometimes he gave the characters British accents and sometimes he didn’t, and at one point would can hear him burp. Doesn’t anyone proof-listen to these recordings?

Narrator ruined this version for me.
I was really enjoying this story and I tried to make it to the end, but after about 4 hours of this narrator, I raged quit. I hate ripping into a narrator / voice actor, but this was just a HORRIBLE choice to narrate this book. First of all, he is American. Do you realize how distracting that is when you have a full british set of characters in a setting that is IN the UK?? Is that just me? Especially when he says something like a common UK slang word that EVERYONE knows, but he says it so oddly that it just took me right out of the story! He mispronounced a lot of words! Normally I let that sort of thing go but they were COMMON words! He pretty much had zero variation between how characters talked. Everyone sounded pretty much exactly the same. Made no difference between age or gender, or accents as I've already stated. This also was HORRIBLY distracting when there were multiple point of views being switched often. AND, question..... Why is an American male narrating a book where the two main characters are UK females?? It was horrible. They sounded the same. Sometimes it was confusing about who's PoV we were now own because there was no difference in cadence, flow, or speech to differentiate the characters!
I am 40 and I have been listening to audiobooks all my life. I have never..... EVER.... listened to an audio book where I could literally hear the narrator TURNING THE PAGES!!! At first I thought maybe it was a sound effect for the character, but no... I don't think it was!! An you could hear him in-between chapters inhaling or clearing his throat. At one point he had a cough or something like that. I am just dumbfounded on this.... I actually hit the back button and listened again to make sure I heard what I thought I did. I could not believe my ears. How unprofessional. Does JournalStone LLC not know how to clean up their audio? Am I the only one who thought this was 1.) distracting, and 2.) frustrating?

Amazing narrative
My wife and I have read together all previous novels by Adam Nevill. I read out loud or have Audible read to us. The scenes are described in such living narrative -- able to spook the hell out of us. He writes like a screenwriter, the images come to life and are vibrant. The story is just so spooky. He is the best writer I know of who so slowly takes one step by step further into the story. I'm so glad we have holy water available to cleanse ourselves after. Highly recommended.

Bad narrator
I am usually not picky about narrators but this one was awful. Aside from the poor casting choice of an American male for a book centered in England with two female protagonists, the narration was just not very good. His weird pronunciation of words like ethereal and enclave was very distracting as was his sporadic use of accents for the characters. I really wanted to enjoy this story but I couldn’t immerse myself in it due to the odd narration.
