Description

A marine archaeologist and a salvager join forces to search for a legendary treasure in this novel that takes readers to the depths of the Caribbean and the heights of passion and suspense - from #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts.

Tate Beaumont has a passion for treasure-hunting. Over the years, she and her father have uncovered many fabulous riches, but one treasure has always eluded them: Angelique’s Curse - a jeweled amulet heavy with history, dark with legend, and tainted with blood. In order to find this precious artifact, the Beaumonts reluctantly form a partnership with salvagers Buck and Matthew Lassiter.

As the Beaumonts and Lassiters pool their resources to locate Angelique’s Curse, the Caribbean waters darken with shadowy deceptions and hidden threats. Their partnership is placed in jeopardy when Matthew refuses to share information - including the truth behind his father’s mysterious death. For now, Tate and Matthew continue their uneasy alliance - until danger and desire begin to rise to the surface...

Good, but a few hiccups

*spoilers*

Overall I really enjoyed this book. In typical Nora Robert’s fashion the scene setting and vernacular used to describe the careers, activities, locations etc were thorough and detailed, making me yearn to go diving in the Caribbean myself.

Additionally, like many standalone Robert’s books, you can expect the typical (and looked forward to) system to play out: love interests meet, squabble, danger ensues and relationships deepen, finishing off with a wedding planned. I’m not at all mad at this, it’s what I’ve come to expect from these books and I keep coming back for the easy reading of it with that zest of a low-key thriller/romance novel too.

The part that dropped this from 4 to 3 stars was the strange use of violence in the relationship between Tate (heroine) and Matthew (love interest), honestly it was a little disturbing. Matthew gropes and low-grade assaults Tate to “scare her off” when she’s considered too young for the kind of relationship he wants with her, and because he thinks he’ll ruin her life. When they meet again, Tate has anger there for the lies and poor treatment, but nothing is said about the violation. Then later, when he thinks she’s double crossed him, the violence he threatens and displays at her was concerning, but Tate, though terrified, accepts it quite quickly as fine and they move on. Her reactions felt unnatural to me, and for a fast-paced story with lovely descriptions and romantic intrigue, it left a bit to be desired in the feminism/consent and proper treatment categories for me.

Where do I Start?

The narration - she reads quickly and with limited expression. Everyone has the same syrupy Southern accent. Tate's voice is childish, making her sound even younger than she is supposed to be (19-20).

The story - there's slow build and then there's this. it takes until Chapter 8 for the bad guy to show up. The 1st 8 chapters are vaguely formulaic and somewhat awkward man meets girl, man kisses girl, girl falls in love with man, man resists girl.... I do mean girl - Tate may think she's an independent young woman but she sounds and acts like a naive, protected and inexperienced child.

I really like Nora Roberts and her more recent books are outstanding, well researched, and properly paced. This is an earlier book, featuring none of Roberts' present skill. I don't think I'll bother finishing this one.

ETA: I finished the book. Definitely not one of Roberts' best. BTW - there is no mention of a reef in this book other than the title. Tate remains stubbornly annoying and syrup-voiced. Matthew remains 1-dimensional, especially for a male lead. Near the end, in a stellar example of poor proofreading, everyone magically ages 10 years. Keep scrolling.

couldn't get more than 3 minutes in

the narrator was just a letdown for this one. I have heard more genial, lively tone and cnversations from siri lady, Google maps lady, voicemail machine, etc everything about it is irritating to me. just not my cup of tea. I think I will get the Kindle version and read it on my own

Painful

Maybe this is a reflection of the time this was written, but the sexually aggressive male “hero” and his smart, independent yet submissive and overly emotional “heroine” storyline just doesn’t do anything for me. The various accents were very poorly done and just made it that much harder to listen to. Wanted to like it but was turned off by those old tropes.

Cringeworthy

The love story in this book got so cringe worthy I couldn’t finish it. She is consistently saying no to him and he’s going to prove to her that he still loves her. I have seen others do a good job of this, but this felt too much like when a woman says no it means no. Made me want to punch somebody.

Meh!

This was my first Nora Roberts book. The narrator did a decent job but there was too much sappy romance and predictability. This type of story is not for me.
