Histoire
For years, the Kingdom of Araluen has prospered, with the evil lord Morgarath safely behind the impassable mountains. For years, its people have felt secure. But the scheming hand of the dark lord has not been idle.... On a special mission for the rangers, Will and his friend Horace, an apprentice knight, travel to a neighboring village and discover the unsettling truth: All the villagers have either been slain or captured. Could it be that Morgarath has finally devised a plan to bring his legions over the supposedly insurmountable pass?

What does it mean to earn the silver oakleaf? So few men have done so. For Will, a mere boy, that symbol of honor has long felt out of reach. Now, in the wake of Araluen's uneasy truce with the raiding Skandians comes word that the Skandian leader has been captured by a dangerous desert tribe. The Rangers are sent to free him. But the desert is like nothing these warriors have seen before. Strangers in a strange land, they are brutalized by sandstorms, beaten by the unrelenting heat, tricked by one tribe that plays by its own rules, and surprisingly befriended by another.

Several years have passed since the apprentice and his master, Will and Halt, first met, and Will is finally a full-fledged Ranger with his own fief to look after. The fief seems sleepy - boring, even - until Lord Syron, master of a castle far in the north, is struck down by a mysterious illness. Description
The international best-selling series with over FIVE million copies sold in the US alone!
They have always scared him in the past - the Rangers, with their dark cloaks and shadowy ways. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now 15-year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. What he doesn't yet realize is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, there is a large battle brewing. The exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time, he will not be denied....
Here is the fantasy adventure that launched the Ranger's Apprentice series, an epic story of heroes and villains that has become an international phenomenon. Perfect for fans of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, T. H. White’s The Sword in the Stone, Christopher Paolini’s Eragon series, and George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Ce que les critiques en disent
"The last few years have seen the publication of many fantasies, but few have the appeal of this original story. Rather than creating a host of strange creatures and magical powers, Flanigan concentrates on character, offering readers a young protagonist they will care about and relationships that develop believably over time.Readers will look forward to the next adventure in The Ruins of Gorlan series." Great Fantasy Story for Many Age Groups
My daughter read the hard copy of the book and really wanted me to read it. I decided to listen to the audiobook while on my frequent road trips. Loved it so much. After finishing it, my daughter and I were able to excitedly discuss our favorite parts which make the experience even better. The story engaged me more as it went along and the character's development resonated with me. At one point I thought the author was going towards a particular cliché storyline, but was surprised when he didn't. Very enjoyable read for older children, teenagers, and adults.

This book is a great adventure
As a middle school librarian I would often recommend this series to my students. They always came back with great reports about how excited and involved they got in this books. They are full of adventure, a little romance, a few monsters, great fights, wars, strategies, terrific characters and humor. I've gotten the whole series for my children to read to their children. I highly recommend this series

Good Story, Bad Narration
I liked the story, but the narrator style was annoying. No one talks the way he read. He is good at accents, but Will sounded like an 8 year old. He's supposed to be 15, and the narrator pauses too much, his intonation is unusual. It was distracting. As for the story, it was pretty good. It doesn't have the big climactic ending I expected. It looks like that will come in later books. I think I'll give the series another chance with book 2, but I'll read it instead of listening to it.

Will’s supposed to be 15 right?
Downloaded for nostalgia and the book holds up, but the narrator’s choice to make Will sound like a 6 year old boy is very off putting and I sincerely hope that changes in the sequeals
