Description

After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson, a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any "normal" friends.

Pronunciations

The story is good but the reader has a bad tendency to put an ‘L’ in the word both and pronounces it like ‘bolth.’ It gets annoying after a while. There are quite a few characters who the reader uses the same voice for which can be confusing at times.

Great narration

The first book I was a bit unsure of this narrator but with this sequel I realized he did the best job of portraying Percy in my mind.

Clever - if Repetitive - Premise.. Lame Execution

Even for the intended audience (pre-teens), this book is poorly delivered.
Rick Riordan has tapped into an ingenious Youth Literature formula: mix a misunderstood kid with a hidden destiny/concealed powers and a heart-of-gold into a fantastical scenario (vampires, dystopian environs, magic & sorcery, etc.)..
In Riordan's case, he combines dyslexic misfit Percy Jackson (secretly the demigod son of Poseidon) with Monsters and Gods from Greek Mythology. It's an undoubtedly successful paradigm, but the matrix has become strikingly formulaic for older youth and adults by this second book in Riordan's series. 'The Sea Of Monsters' borrows the same quest-based plot device used in the first book and presents it adequately.. but besides adding a couple of new characters doesn’t provide much innovation. It is almost an event-for-event retelling of Homer's 'Oddysey'.
To that lazy approach, Riordan adds episodes of straight-up puerile dialogue - this book approaches the infantile at times.

Jesse Bernstein again delivers an "average" performance. His voice-acting is a little improved with this text over 'The Lightning Thief', but his timbre remains subpar and he reads too slowly (The unremarkable narration was somewhat improved by speeding the playback rate to 1.15X.. but once again I found myself wishing Listening Library had hired someone different for the project).

I don’t doubt this second book in the 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' series will be enjoyable for your 8-12 year-old, but it’s only worth 4/10 stars to children's books fans like me. If your kid loved the first book, they will almost certainly like this one - go ahead and spend the Credit. Personally, I will not be continuing on with this increasingly adolescent series.

Ah adult humour in children's books

I loved this book series when I was younger so when I came across it on here I thought might as well get it see if it's as good as I remember which have to say it is. but now I know adult humour so the waffles can be blue line near the start of chapter 1 really made me chuckle.

Cyclops voice won me over

The voice of the cyclops is fantastic, a must listen for the good feels. It has a good story and if you like Greek mythology it is a good follow up to book 1.

great family fare

My 11 and 9-year-old kids (a boy and a girl) have really enjoyed this series and I have gotten caught up in it too. The story is fun and engaging. There are a series of battles and challenges and plenty of suspense, but it is all laced with humor. The books have also gotten my kids very interested in learning about Greek mythology-- bonus! The reader is pretty good with voices and does a convincing teenage narrator. I'm glad they've chosen to go with the same reader for both books in the series so far and hope they continue. The first book in the series is called the Lightening Thief.

This is realy good book

I previously owned the book but this audio makes the book feel all new to me. It makes it feel like I am acually there with Percy as he is the nearly getting blasted by dodgeballs of death. It was defiantly woth my time.

Brace Yourself

This book was amazing! Just as good as the first one! It was enthralling and an overall mysterious feel as if the next step they took could have been off a cliff. But on the other hand the narrator was'nt as good with some of the characters, they just sounded either shrill or dopey or flat or all three. I would consider buying this as a real book but since Jesse spoke as Percy most of the time it was'nt the worst. Great book and the audiobook is good if your hands are busy. If you have time I would try to read the book. Just one warning, have the next book ready to read right away!

Genuinely Wonderful Teen Writer

My teenage daughter loves to read and has thoroughly enjoyed Riordan's books. I have also read these stories and they are very well written. I am an extremely difficult to please reader and I actually enjoyed this book. I prefer paper to my MP3 but the plot and story line was well thought out and planned. The flow is great and the Greek history or Greek God stories actually play a phenomenal part in the stories. The way the author flows the historical stories of the Greek gods with the present is inspiring and just fun. He leaves something for the next book and keeps you wanting more. I believe Rick Riordan is very talented writer and I read about 30 to 40 novels per year and listen to the same amount.

Horrible narration takes the fun out of the story.

My daughter couldn't wait to listen to this as she just finished reading the book, but she and I both found the narrator's rendition of the various characters annoying. He didn't seem to match voices with personalities and made all the children sound a bit dumb. If it wasn't for the poor narration, the book would have been a delightful listen though I believe the first book in this series is better. Then again, I read the first book and did not listen to it. This may be better served read and not listened to.

Sophmoric

Rick Riordan's second book in the Olympus series is quite good, but is not as entertaining as the first book. However, much like JK Rowling, his second book seems to be a spring-board for upcoming books in the series: Events that transpire in book 2 will likely be relevant in later books in the series. I look forward to "The Titan's Curse".

So what if I'm a grown up?

I am not afraid to admit that I love these books! Obviously, the mythological basis for the stories is the magnet for me, but the action and adventure hold my attention. I find the narrator a little distracting at times, but he does a fair job. I do think the best narrators are the ones who don't act like they're reading a kid's book, of which Mr. Bernstein is unfortunately guilty.
