Before Elloren Gardner came to possess the White Wand of myth, the Wand was drawn to another bearer: Sagellyn Gaffney. Sage’s affinity for light magery, a rare skill among Gardnerians, makes her the perfect protector for the one tool that can combat the shadows spreading across Erthia. But in order to keep the Wand safe from the dark forces hunting for it, Sage must abandon everything she once knew and forge a new path for herself...a dangerous course that could lead to either triumph or utter ruin.

A Great Disappointment
The second book in this series, The Ironwood Flower, was such an order of magnitude better than the first (The Black Witch) that I was expecting truly great things of the third instalment. Instead, I was treated to standard Harlequin Romance fare that was formulaic decades ago. Honestly, were it not for the number of times that essentially the same scene occurs in essentially the same way, the entire book might have been about five chapters long. There are only so many synonyms one can use for “the fire travelling” through someone’s “lines:” flowing, winding, twining, flaring, rushing, racing, surging, charging, etc. They all get a turn. Then there is the absurd convention of stating the month and location of each chapter, along with the main character present in it. Since 90% of the story takes place in “the sixth month,” somewhere in Gardneria, and features Elloren Gardner, it hardly seems necessary. If we knew what day of the week it was, even that might have been more helpful than reminding us constantly that this is taking place in “the sixth month.” Quite frankly, this one is a monumental waste of time. You’d probably fine to skip it and go right from the second book to the next one, whenever that appears.

I would not have cried so much...
If it were not for the brilliant voice acting by Julia Whelan. Some may say this book can be skipped, but please don't. This novel fills the holes of the story's mythos. Now I wait 9 month's until the next novel is published. Wonderful take on magic, power, and responsibility with a remarkable twist into the heroine's journey.

Not so great
This book wasn't as engaging as the first two, I was a little dissapointed in general. I didn't mind the different POVs but I didn't care for them either, there was a point during those POVs that I considered stopping, but oh well, I'm already invested in this series, now I have to see it through. I really enjoyed Tierney with the death fae and the love development between lucas and elloren even tho I hated the little time she took to get over a major grief.

This spoils the book.
I earnestly waited for this book to come out because I fell in love with the first two books. I suppose my expectations were too grand because this book is seriously just an excuse for Lukas to have a shot. Yvan “dies” in the first couple of chapters—so stupid and completely unconvincing. So you know he isn’t actually dead and this is an excuse for Elloren to began a romance with Lukas without the guilt of cheating—so transparent. And since Yvan is clearly alive with the author blatantly ignoring him throughout the book, there is only one outcome for Lukas that will give Elloren a clean slate and primed for a fiery romance with her true love. The book was predictable and such a let down. I kept waiting for the “everything is going to be okay” followed by sudden disaster. I kept waiting for growth. Unfortunately, at the end of the story Elloren was essentially the same “powerless” gullible girl, but now she can also throw knives. I mean one character was invented at the beginning of the story, so she could die at the end... this story was unnecessary, and could have been condensed to a chapter in the next book. I mean it would have been better if we just knew Yvan was alive. The best part of the first two books is the author didn’t flinch from Elloren actually having problems, of actually doing things wrong and dealing with it. If only this book had the depth, rather than the rose colored Disney glasses firmly planted on its world view. I think this book was the point in the writing process where you just get mad at all your characters and start to hate the story. I’m so sad because it was a fluffy piece of fiction, not a gripping epic fantasy.

Ugh! 😫
I really liked this series until this book. This book had some good moments... When I didn’t feel like I was reading a straight romance book. Romance is fine, all of the other books had some but this book revolves around it. I get it, they are attracted to each other now let’s move on with the story. The problem is that it never does. I wanted to roll my eyes every time they had to kiss to have an intense magical connection. Is there magic contained in the fluids they are swapping? “Hang on we need more magic,” pause for kissing scene... most boring parts of the book. Where did the substance go and when did Elloran get so whiney? The best parts of the book are the few parts that Elloran isn’t in. Where is Diana? Where are any of the other characters? It was a really great book when it moved away from Elloran’s story. I have never wanted to slap a main character more. She is shallow and weak. Come on! No one is that weak, especially after what she overcame in the other books. If I was actually reading the book instead of listening to it I would have thrown it across the room. I can’t afford a new phone so I kept it together. The narration is good.

Ughghgh just ughghgh!!
This book started out strongly. I was really enjoying it at the beginning, then it just became about a whiny "hero" girl, and the love triangle, - ooops one of them "dies" but hey, there is lots of pining away. Eloren is weak and annoying . All the "power coursing through my lines" got soooo very old. Every other sentence seemed to be that. It was so bad. Not reading the next one. The reader was amazing however. Kudos to her, bc the book was so boring, frustrating and disappointing. I haven't written a review in a very long time, but seriously if I can help someone make a decision to perhaps just move on, then that is good. I feel I wasted time I cannot get back. There are so many good books out there. Just not this one.

Elloren is too weak for too long
I may not be able to finish this book. I've only got 5 hours left but I am really struggling. I think the author kept Elloren too weak for too long. I'm 3/4 of the way through the 3rd book in the series and she is STILL needing and seeking guidance from everyone else around her. I could understand her weakness in the first book, and somewhat through the second book, but homegirl is STILL not able to access her power and is afraid and timid, and I'm finding myself over this narrative. Also, if I hear Julia Whelan say the phrase "my lines" one more time...🙉. I've loved this series. I've loved the underlying messages. I'm sure by the end of this book Elloren will have found her power, but I'm not sure I care enough anymore to find out how.

I love this series and the author is good but this book frustrated me in a lot of ways. if I wasn't so committed to the series I might have stopped reading it. this is book 3 for ellorin and I feel like by this time and all that she had been through she would have gained some semblance of strength and resolve but no. we spend the whole book dealing with her insecurities and self inflicted weaknesses. I just can't anymore with her. then just as she comes into her own the book ends. aghhhh. im really annoyed

Spoilers Contained: This book was a waste.
Through this entire series I have been waiting for Elorin to come into her power. To stop cowering behind others and find her strength and be an OPed, Broken badass who takes shit from no one. The exact opposite happens. I never really got her connection to Evan in the first place and she spends so much time talking about him. Then at the last minute we don’t know if her new love interest has survived?! And SHE STILL ISNT POWERFUL!!! She still cowers and I find that this whole book could have been told in a few chapters. The writing is repetitive and overly explained. And I’m bored and frustrated that i waited this long for this much nothing to happen. This should have been the final book. It just feels like they know I’ll give them my money to find out what happens next so they can write whatever they want. I have 25 minutes left and I don’t even know if I want to finish it. I’m disappointed. I was waiting for thrilling tails of her kicking ass and taking names and she like sort of starts to feel empowered but gets cut off at the knees and still letting a man save her. Ughhhhhhhhhh

Awful writing
I am not a picky reader, but this? It repeats itself over and over again. It spells every emotion out. I have really enjoyed this series so far but the writing in this book is so bad that I almost can not listen to it. The performance is good though.

Frustrated
Still trying to figure out the point of this book in the series. It def has some good parts, but mostly it feels like a 19 hour Segway between book 2 and book 4. I assume there is a book 4 coming to (hopefully) redeem book 3.
