"A proper twisty thriller."—Sarah Pinborough
A stranger has infiltrated your family…and now he’s taking over.
Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.
The last thing Connie wants is a stranger meddling in the safe routine she’s built around Gwen. She loves being the one Gwen turns to for cooking, cleaning and company. But the more Paul visits, the more Gwen is relying on him. By the time he conveniently finds himself between homes and has no choice but to move in, Connie is certain he’s trying to push her out completely.
It’s her word against his, though, and as her attempts to unmask him become ever more desperate she’s not the only one left wondering if she’s lost her grip on reality. But when events start spiralling rapidly out of her control, should Connie wage all-out war on Paul and risk losing Gwen forever—or has that been his plan all along?

Connie can't deny she's nervous about meeting her boyfriend's family. Spending the weekend at their ritzy woodland summer home, Evan's already given her fair warning that his parents are cold, snobbish, and especially unpleasant toward those outside their usual social circles. So when Evan's mother warmly greets them with open arms, Connie is as confused as he is. They're so friendly, in fact, Evan himself can hardly believe they're real. Then, while helping Evan's mother with dinner, Connie overhears strange noises coming from the basement—what almost sounds like voices calling out for help.

When human bones are found beneath an old chapel in the woods, evidence suggests the remains could be linked to the decades-old case of missing teen Annalise Jansen. Homicide detective Jane Munro—pregnant and acutely attuned to the preciousness of life—hopes the grim discovery will finally bring closure to the girl’s family. But for a group of Annalise’s old friends, once dubbed the Shoreview Six by the media, it threatens to expose a terrible pledge made on an autumn night forty-seven years ago.

Emma is the one that got away. The only survivor of a serial killer known in the tabloids as “The Hairdresser”, because of the trophies he takes from his victims. The police aren't convinced. Nor is her husband. She never actually saw her tormentor properly, but now she recognizes him in every man she sees. Haunted by the horrifying incident and unwanted notoriety, Emma gives up her job as a psychiatrist and retreats from the outside world to recuperate at home, where it’s quiet. Gemma Guillory has lived in the Australian Outback enclave of Rainier her entire life. She knows the tiny, red-dust town’s ins and outs by heart, knows the people like they are her family, their quirks as if they were her own. She also knows her once charming town is now remembered for one reason and one reason only: three innocent people died there at the hands of a serial killer. The last stop on the Rainier Ripper’s trail of deaths fifteen years ago was her picturesque little tea shop.

“I inhaled this book. A novel of second guesses, of mistrustful characters and downright terrifying ones. An absolute ride of a thriller. I loved it.”—L. V. Matthews, author of The Twins and The Silent Waters

Good story
The story is good and it's hard to put it down. But one of the female voices is so caricatural that the parts read by that actor feel like you've suddenly slipped in a bad comedy. It's very distracting. I had to put the speed of the tract a couple of notches faster so as not to hear that terrible accent. Too bad because the story is edge of your seat readable and has very poignant and sad parts when the protagonists relate their relationships with their mothers.

Many twists, but…
Okay, so this novel is fairly decent, and there are plenty of twists to keep you engaged. However, the first portion, which was great and my favorite part, just didn’t mesh right with the second portion. There was something missing there, or just not developed enough in terms of ending/beginning. The very end of the novel felt too quick, yet drawn out at the same time. The narration was great, and I really enjoyed the variety of perspectives.

Maybe a bit too much going on
I liked this novel and the performance is well done but it didn’t quite stick a 5 star landing for me. I also don’t really love when something ends with a “let’s wrap this all up” chapter. Bit lazy.

Good storytelling
3.75 stars
This was my 8th book by this author and I was very pleased with this one, mostly for the storytelling.
I was hooked from the beginning and I didn’t want to stop reading.
Although slow, with a farfetched storyline and unlikeable characters, I thought it was very entertaining. The development was quite smart.
The cat and mouse chasing was really interesting and one twist was surprising. I could not wait to see who would win the title as the best con artist.
I read the ebook while simultaneously listening to the audiobook.
I do recommend the audiobook.
