Description

The Knights Templar were the wealthiest, most powerful - and most secretive - of the military orders that flourished in the crusading era. Their story - encompassing as it does the greatest international conflict of the Middle Ages, a network of international finance, a swift rise in wealth and influence followed by a bloody and humiliating fall - has left a comet's tail of mystery that continues to fascinate and inspire historians, novelists and conspiracy theorists.

Unabridged edition read by Dan Jones.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"A pacy narrative history of the medieval order laced with tales of blood and bravery." ( The Sunday Times)
"This is a fascinating story of fanaticism...Jones is certainly an entertainer, but also a fine historian who knows how to render serious scholarship into accessible prose. Seldom does one find serious history that is so easy to read." ( The Times)
"Snappy, well-paced…. The author’s ambition, he says, is to tell the story of the Templars in a straightforward way and 'to write a book that will entertain as well as inform'. He has done precisely that." ( The Daily Telegraph)

Comprehensive and Immersive

I loved the history, the recreated timeline and the stories that helped to immerse the reader in each character or battle. While this was an epic recreation it was also a well-crafted vehicle of learning and insight. Further, the author was a fantastic reader. To any reader interested in the holy wars, crusades or Templar organization, this is a must own.

Fantastic program

This book was very well researched and written from an unbiased point of view with no hidden agenda. The author has obviously done a huge amount of research and put it together very well. I have read many different works on the Templars and found this one to be the most exhaustive.
The audible was well read and fun to listen to. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in this subject. I have the hard cover book as well but listening to it was fantastic.

Scholarly and Entertaining

This is more or less a textbook. It would be a great required text for a History class covering this aspect of the Crusades. It's loaded with references and quotes from contemporary witnesses...but they're blended into the text nicely.
Dan Jones writes fairly well, with a style that makes this (fairly dry) subject matter enjoyable. History books can quickly descend into names, dates, and settings. Jones avoids that...for the most part. The Structure of the topic (Pilgrims-Soldiers-Bankers-Heretics) makes sense and makes the text digestible.
As a reader, Jones is fairly good. Easy to listen to, clear, and reasonably expressive (very little monotone here).

I give this syllabus 7 out of 10 stars.

A balanced and 'readable' telling of the Order

Dan Jones does a good job incorporating numerous sources and providing a balanced telling of the Order's history. The book unfolds very much like a consistent story with twists and turns while also sidetracking to provide relevant details to people and places. I really enjoyed this one!

A very good chronology with little to no fantasy.

The writing is a great timeline of events. Read by the author with great depth and knowledge. Loved the injections of historical accounts from the Islamic writings, to give the account more credibility. This not a fanciful story of the romance of the Templars but a more plain fact of events

A Riveting Narrative History of the Templars

Having already thoroughly enjoyed Jones' books on The Plantagenets and the Wars of the Roses, I had high hopes for The Templars and was not disappointed. I knew relatively little about the famous Holy Order beforehand and learned a tremendous amount from this book, all the while being thoroughly entertained. Excellent narrative history.
