When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel", "Hansel and Gretel", and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style.

In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father, a struggling actor and director, cast him in a United Way commercial. Soon Bryan was haunting the local movie theater, memorizing and reenacting favorite scenes with his older brother. Acting was clearly the boy's destiny - until one day his father disappeared. Suddenly destiny took a backseat to survival. Seeking something more stable, perhaps subconsciously trying to distance himself from his absent father, Cranston decided on a career in law enforcement.

Even the smartest among us can feel inept as we fail to figure out which light switch or oven burner to turn on, or whether to push, pull, or slide a door. The fault, argues this ingenious - even liberating - audiobook, lies not in ourselves, but in product design that ignores the needs of users and the principles of cognitive psychology. The Design of Everyday Things shows that good, usable design is possible. The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints.

Four chronically homeless people - Amelia One Sky, Timber, Double Dick and Digger - seek refuge in a warm movie theater when a severe Arctic front descends on the city. During what is supposed to be a one-time event, this temporary refuge transfixes them. They fall in love with this new world and, once the weather clears, continue their trips to the cinema. On one of these outings they meet Granite, a jaded and lonely journalist who has turned his back on writing “the same story over and over again” in favor of the escapist qualities of film, and an unlikely friendship is struck.

Longish but Worthwhile!
This lengthy work presents a witty account of Greek myths. The author, who is also the narrator in the audio version, dives right into the stories, with no introduction or preamble. Only in the epilogue does he make his approach explicit, that is, to favour telling rather than analysing.
He displays an amazing level of scholarship, using Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” as a major source among many others. A pleasant low-key humour is present throughout, perhaps at its pinnacle in the dialogues involving Echo. The many references to how the names of mythological protagonists are now present in current English words is enlightening.
The myths are presented in logical order : Creation, the rise of the Titans, the birth of the gods and the Ages of mankind. There is no overall narrative ark, however, and some may find things get a bit wearisome three quarters of the way through, yet another story following the previous one.
Still, this work will prove of great interest to anyone curious to learn more about Greek mythology.

Please, will you tell me a story?
How does Stephen Fry do it? The pantheon of Greek Gods was never boring to me, but could be confusing and WAS bizarre and alien. Fry has made it so...Human.
This is a man who knows his subject so well that he can play with it, adding bits of cosmological physics and a Monty Python reference about cheese, yet still teach us about pounds, shillings and pence as well as the labyrinthine origins of these mythic beings.
The enchantment began immediately for me because I forgot to consider who was doing the reading. After only a few minutes of listening to his voice my parasympathetic nervous system to kicked in, slipping me gently into dreams.
For anyone who is interested in comparative religion or ancient civilizations; for anyone who ever was soothed to sleep by hearing a bedtime story, to anyone who has appreciated Fry's previous works... I truly believe that you'll enjoy hearing the early Greek stories of how it all began.

The format just didn't work for me.
This review is for the audiobook. I love Stephen Fry's writing and performances. Unfortunately the format of this book really worked against it. I just wish Fry had chosen to focus more narrowly on a select few gods rather than trying to exhaustively cover them all. At times the "X begat Y who begat Z" sections felt straight out of the Old Testament.
Don't get me wrong, the good parts are very good, but the in-between parts are a slog. I had the hardest time not spacing out and letting my mind wander during the "in-between" sections that I'd suddenly realize I was missing a good part and would have to rewind. Ultimately I gave up about halfway through.
Although Stephen Fry's narration is superb, I can't help but think that reading it might be the way to go, so that you can skip to the good stuff more easily.
