Story
One of the very best scientific predictors for how any child turns out - in terms of happiness, academic success, leadership skills, and meaningful relationships - is whether at least one adult in their life has consistently shown up for them. In an age of scheduling demands and digital distractions, showing up for your child might sound like a tall order. But as best-selling authors Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson reassuringly explain, it doesn’t take a lot of time, energy, or money. Instead, showing up means offering a quality of presence.

We want our children to succeed, to be their best, and to do their best, but what if they are not on board? A few years ago, Ned Johnson and Bill Stixrud started noticing the same problem from different angles: even high-performing kids were coming to them acutely stressed and lacking any real motivation. Many complained that they had no real control over their lives.

Story
Over her decades as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Mona Delahooke has routinely counseled distraught parents who struggle to manage their children’s challenging, sometimes oppositional behaviors. These families are understandably focused on correcting or improving a child’s lack of compliance, emotional outbursts, tantrums, and other “out of control” behavior. But, as she has shared with these families, a perspective shift is needed. Behavior, no matter how challenging, is not the problem but a symptom; a clue about what is happening in a child’s unique physiologic makeup.

Publisher's Summary
From the authors of The Whole-Brain Child and No-Drama Discipline, an indispensable guide to unlocking your child’s innate capacity for resilience, compassion, and creativity.
When facing contentious issues such as screen time, food choices, and bedtime, children often act out or shut down, responding with reactivity instead of receptivity. This is what New York Times best-selling authors Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson call a No Brain response. But our kids can be taught to approach life with openness and curiosity. When kids work from a Yes Brain, they’re more willing to take chances and explore. They’re more curious and imaginative. They’re better at relationships and handling adversity.
In The Yes Brain, the authors give parents skills, scripts, and activities to bring kids of all ages into the beneficial “yes” state. You’ll learn:
- The four fundamentals of the Yes Brain - balance, resilience, insight, and empathy - and how to strengthen them
- The key to knowing when kids need a gentle push out of a comfort zone vs. needing the “cushion” of safety and familiarity
- Strategies for navigating away from negative behavioral and emotional states (aggression and withdrawal) and expanding your child’s capacity for positivity
The Yes Brain is an essential tool for nurturing positive potential and keeping your child’s inner spark glowing and growing strong.
Includes a bonus PDF with fun graphics and tools to help you cultivate the Yes Brain in your child and you!
Praise for The Yes Brain:
“This unique and exciting book shows us how to help children embrace life with all of its challenges and thrive in the modern world. Integrating research from social development, clinical psychology, and neuroscience, it’s a veritable treasure chest of parenting insights and techniques.” (Carol S. Dweck, PhD, author of Mindset )
“I have never read a better, clearer explanation of the impact parenting can have on a child’s brain and personality.” (Michael Thompson, PhD)
“Easily assimilated and informative, the book will help adults enable children to lead physically and emotionally satisfying and well-rounded lives filled with purpose and meaningful relationships. Edifying, easy-to-understand scientific research that shows the benefits that accrue when a child is encouraged to be inquisitive, spirited, and intrepid.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Tapping into empathy
My favourite part of the audiobook was learning about empathy. As a child, I mostly was encouraged to “be tough and move on” when I had a disappointment or to “look at the bright side”. I noticed myself doing the same thing to my son when he was hurting and have instead learned through this book the power of just sitting there with the pain and creating an emotional connection. It’s incredible to see how well my son has responded to this shift!

Aims to bring balance to kids and parents.
In short this book is about helping you and your children bring balance to your life. This books is aimed for parents with school aged children. It’s good advice, but it assumes a life with access and free of complexity - so I proceed with caution when recommending it to others.
It’s nicely narrated. It’s fairly well paced. One of the author sounds a bit like George Clooney. A few moments it feels a bit “smug” or “corny” - but it’s really worth a listen.

Really disappointed
I love this mans work and was really excited to listen.
The female voice is just terrible. She droned on and I could not engage with what she was saying. It was like she was trying to force herself to sound interested but she failed.
I have tried 5 times to listen but it is too hard. Wish i had spent my money on the paper book and not the audible version.
