Description

The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery.

A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. At the heart of it all is 18-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang - a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette's first love...and first betrayal.

But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns - and grudges - aside and work together, for if they can't stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.

Story is 🔥🔥 But the Narrator Didn’t Do It For Me

Let me just start by saying I love Chloe Gong’s storytelling and characters, but specifically I’m leaving this review of the Audiobook Narrator. Cindy Kay’s portrayal of the characters, I felt was way off of what I was reading on the page. Most of the time, I could hardly decipher what Cindy was saying as she has a lower and whispery voice quality. Can’t blame her natural tone, however, When reading the characters of Kathleen and ANY MALE especially Roma, her voice was so throaty and monotone that I definitely couldn’t understand what was being said. I had to rewind multiple times. *mild Spoiler below*⬇️

Especially any scenes where Roma is going through a emotional event like what happened to Alisa, where Roma clearly is distraught and angry, He sounded unbothered and bored in the audiobook. To me it took me right out of the story.

Over all, it was a great story with an just okay Audiobook in my opinion and I think I will just have to finish it physically, but still enjoyable overall!

Great story, okay narration

voice actor used the wrong voices for the wrong characters a couple of times, and used the wrong tone for the dialogue (even when the text clearly stated the tone) over and over again

A haunting monster, ruthless gangs, a fight for leadership and star crossed lovers is what you will find in this Romeo and Juliette-esque tale. Set in a rival torn Shanghai during the 1920's , there is bloodshed, there is gore and there are gangsters.

I wouldn't call this one completely a love story, but it's there trying to fight its way forward. And don't even get me started on the ending! I will absolutely be reading the second book on this duology!

Beautifully Written

This book not only lives up to the hype around it but exceeds it. Not only was this a unique version of a timeless story, but it was also told with a gorgeous style and relevant themes that totally enthralled me from beginning to end.

Juliette is fierce, stubborn, and wickedly clever. Her attitude and perseverance in challenging situations made her highly compelling. In contrast, Roma is sweet and mostly gentle, his heart big making him instantly loveable. All of the side characters each have a unique spin on their personalities, which are borrowed from Romeo & Juliet. I really enjoyed many of the interactions, though Juliette and Roma obviously had the most enthralling chemistry.

The story is also fresh and exciting and melds perfectly with the setting. This version of Shanghai feels vivid and real, blending history with fiction and even a dash of horror. It's thrilling, intense, and moves at an exciting pace.

I had high hopes for this book and it exceeded all expectations I've had. Definitely a stellar and memorable debut that I will be thinking about for a long time. Highly recommended to fans of Shakespeare, tragic romance, Six of Crows and Peaky Blinders, and fantasy horror. Can't wait to start the next book!
