When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught. Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

In North Devon, where the rivers Taw and Torridge converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his father's funeral takes place. The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

One night, Annie went missing. Disappeared from her own bed. There were searches, appeals. Everyone thought the worst. And then, miraculously, after 48 hours, she came back. Though she couldn't, or wouldn't, say what had happened to her. But something happened to my sister. I can't explain what. I just know that when she came back, she wasn't the same. She wasn't my Annie. I didn't want to admit, even to myself, that sometimes I was scared to death of my own little sister.

Description
A gripping crime thriller full of stunning twists and turns.
When DI Rowan Jackman and DS Evans are told that the IT boss has disappeared, they soon suspect foul play. Orla Cracken, known as Orac, is no ordinary techie; she was once a field agent traveling abroad undercover, working for the government.
Meanwhile DC Robbie Melton discovers that two people, both urban explorers, have mysteriously disappeared whilst out exploring abandoned buildings. One went missing at a disused airfield, but was it a military base, or was it civilian?
The gruesome discovery of their decaying bodies found hanging in ancient church ruins bursts the case wide open, and Jackman and Evans are under pressure to find the killer. With Orac safely back in the picture following a secret journey to Ireland to try and find her long-lost sister who went missing as a child, the hunt is now on to find the killer before he hangs his next victim.
It soon becomes clear that the killer is targeting urban explorers, but why is he determined to track down and torture these innocent people, and how is the case connected to Orac’s mysterious past, still shrouded in secrecy?
The latest gritty crime thriller by Joy Ellis, set in the Lincolnshire Fens, will keep you guessing – and your pulse racing – until the very end.

Just Ok
This was my least favourite in the series because the story line felt a little weak and I was less invested in the characters this time, it felt like a watered down version of what the other books in the series are to me. It almost seemed like there were too many characters so we scratched the surface of many but didn’t learn enough about each to get pulled into the story. I adore Joy Ellis and while it was not my favourite, it was still enjoyable.

DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans Book 7
THEY DISAPPEARED is another great Jackman & Evans modern detective thriller. An it yet another novel about the popular topic in Great Britain of Urban Explorers. This novel has two threads the first of which is a member of Jackman's team named Orac who goes missing and the other is the multiple gruesome murders of urban explorers At the end the two threads merge to become one. Actor Richard Armitage narrates wonderfully well.

Another Great Jackman & Evans Story
Joy Ellis has weaved yet another great Jackman and Evans story. Urban Explorers are disappearing and no one seems to care. One of the team knows something isn't right and after a little digging, finds there is something to worry about.
In the meantime Orac also vanishes and puts the entire team on high alert. At first these two events don't seem connected, but as the story moves forward, you find they are.
It was wonderful to get a better picture of Orac, who is fast becoming one of my favorite characters, besides Jackman and Evans, of course.
It was a well written story, with a twist I didn't see coming. Richard Armitage has such a wonderful repertoire of voices in these books, it's a wonder how he keeps them separate. He was exceptional, as usual.
Now that Joy Ellis has opened up a couple new storylines, I can't wait to see what happens next with this wonderful team.

The Pain Will Disappear
Another good story by Joy Ellis. She interweaves the human condition so well with the major crime. This story gives a deeper look into one of the main characters, and how the crime in focus reflects an event in her past. The update on the main characters is like reading a letter from a family member. The insight to two characters heart breaks and the prospect of moving forward in life is an added bonus. Hope future books expand on these characters and mainly that between Jackman & Evans. Richard Armitage voices are always amazing.

Any Plausible Story Line Also Disappeared
This is perhaps one of the most contrived plots I have ever read. It starts off with a great premise but grows increasingly more ridiculous. The clues are far from subtle and disbelief needs to be suspended. In most police dramas the cops do not believe in coincidences, but this whole book is based on coincidences the cops swallow whole and never really question until the end.

Worth it
May need to revisit the first hour of the story since I was delightedly distracted by the pure pleasure of Richard Armitage’s narration.
I’d never heard of this author or characters before and only checked this out to listen to Mr. Armitage. That being said, I’m now interested in listening or reading the rest of the series since I found the story and characters so enjoyable. Even though this book was obviously a later one in the series, it still was written well as a stand alone.

Fluffy, non-committal mystery
I don’t know if this is the final book in the series, but it certainly tied things up nicely. The stakes never seemed too high, and there wasn’t much tension, but with everything going on in the world and my life right now it’s kind of nice to read a book where everyone gets along and things work out “just so”. I originally started listening to this series because I enjoy Armitage’s narration, but was pleasantly surprised with the comfort these books bring. They are by no means great, but sometimes you just want a warm blanket of a story, you know? This might be the weakest book in the bunch, but I still enjoyed my time with the Fenland Constabulary. If you’ve read other books in this series, you know exactly what you’ll get with this one.
