Histoire
When Diya Burman's best friend, Angie, dies unexpectedly, it feels like her own life is falling apart. Grief costs her friends, family and even her job. But that's ok, because now she's got a new job: working at Slough & Sons, a family firm that deals in cleaning up after the recently deceased. Old love letters. Porcelain dolls. Hoarded trinkets. Clearing away the remnants of other people's lives, Diya begins to see things. Horrible things. Things that get harder and harder to write off as merely her grieving imagination.

It was no secret that journalist Jack Sparks had been researching the occult for his new book. No stranger to controversy, he'd already triggered a furious Twitter storm by mocking an exorcism he witnessed. Then there was that video: 40 seconds of chilling footage that Jack repeatedly claimed was not of his making, yet it was posted from his own YouTube account. Nobody knew what happened to Jack in the days that followed - until now.

Jonathan Sims’ Work Impresses as Always
Always good with representation and amazing story telling, Jonathan Sims’ work always pleases. This is no exception.
Sims’ work with The Magnus Archives certainly exhibited his mastery of suspense and horror, but this solidifies it.
Very poggers, Jon 👌🏻

Damn
My greivance with most other horror is my frustration that it takes so long to build up anything chilling enough to hook me properly but I like how dividing it into the 13 sub stories means that theres these self contained bits of tension, which still accumulate into a final twist which ties together all the threads in a way that makes sense and is still satisfyingly gruesome. Some chapters are definitely more freaky than others, and the ending is a little straight forward, but it has good re read value and its the first thing to succesfully freak me out in a while.

Good story and characters
I really enjoyed the Magnus Archives, which is why I chose this book. I liked the book and characters. It was worth the credit. But I didn’t love it like I hoped I would. I think that is due to the format. It read way more like a podcast than a novel. I’m sure Mr. Sims has more novels in him and I’m confident he will improve.

Excellent, 10/10
Sims narrative voice is incredibly strong in his writing as always. Slow, creeping dread is built up beautifully, nothing being spoon fed to you while also not being too complicated to follow. We love to hear a pipe murder. We love natural queer inclusion. We love revenge against capitalism.

I expected good- it was better
The final line of the epilogue has got to be my favourite last line of any horror story to date, as well as a perfect encapsulation of both Sims' strengths as a writer and one of modern horror's greatest strengths as a genre.
I was brought here by The Magnus Archives, but I believe Thirteen Storeys is Sims' best work by far. All of the narrative strengths of TMA shine here with none of its weaknesses.
Distinct characters and the ability of individual chapters to stand alone held my interest all the way through. Sims has a tendency to ensure that unlikeable characters have an interesting enough story that you stick with them despite it, and characters with a slower introductory arc are likeable enough to keep you invested. The final twist was a delightful surprise that nonetheless felt well founded from a character development standpoint after the pieces were in place.

Fantastic listen!
At first, I was a little wary of seeing multiple voice actors, but each person added depth to a very captivating story. I was at the edge of my seat wondering how everything fit together, and the end really tied up the loose ends.
Highly recommend this title!
