Description

The eighth novel in James S. A. Corey's New York Times best-selling Expanse series - now a major television series.

Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper.

In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.

At the heart of the empire, Teresa Duarte prepares to take on the burden of her father's godlike ambition. The sociopathic scientist Paolo Cortázar and the Mephistophelian prisoner James Holden are only two of the dangers in a palace thick with intrigue, but Teresa has a mind of her own and secrets even her father, the emperor, doesn't guess.

And throughout the wide human empire, the scattered crew of the Rocinante fights a brave rear-guard action against Duarte's authoritarian regime.

Memory of the old order falls away, and a future under Laconia's eternal rule - and with it, a battle that humanity can only lose - seems more and more certain. Because against the terrors that lie between worlds, courage and ambition will not be enough....

Dialogue cut out at 14:41:40 end of chapter 39

The book was going great until the dialogue at 14:41:40 end of chapter 39 cut out and a male voice says "409" and I missed what was being said in the last lines of that chapter.

Great Book!!!!

At first I was angry that my favorite characters seemed to have disappeared!!! I kept thinking, where are we going here??? I was not disappointed but it was definitely a different read from the previous novels. I don't want to say anymore as it don't want to spoil the story for others. I have all these novels and will continue to follow. I am definitely looking forward to further adventures of this crew of people. Love Jefferson Mays narration!!!!

Best installment yet

The authors really used the first person narrative to the stories advantage in this intallment.

The stark contrast between Elvi, a well educated scientist, and Teressa, 14 year old who despite her position still is a 14 year old girl, really added a depth to the story telling. Aswell as Bobbi and Naomi having different beleifs on the vision for the Rebellion they helped start in the last book. Alex stands as sort of the "sober second thought" to Bobbie.

I am really optomistic that the authors have really mastered the art of first person story telling and that future installment will give the reader a multi dimensional perspective on the plot. Particularly because politics aren't single dimensional.

Best Story in Series, Worst in Audio Quality

Performance rated 2 stars, not because of Jefferson Mays (he's great), but because audio quality is terrible. I still had Persepolis Rising downloaded and switched back to it to compare... PR is markedly better quality in every way. I don't know what happened here. Even downloading on best possibly quality did nothing. The issue is the actual recording. It's tinny and hollow and dirty. It buzzes at times when Mays raises his volume. There is no bass. I wish I could say I got used to it, but it's just so very bad.

The story here is the best in the series. The characters and the whole universe are exhausted and against insurmountable odds. It's a very "Game of Thrones" feeling where all our favourite characters are alone, the family split apart. Everyone's fighting for power when none of it should matter - there's a much more important and powerful enemy all around them. You could even draw comparisons to real life politics in the face of climate change. I can't wait for the last book and at the same time, I don't want it to end.

Great book but badly cut together audio

Really enjoyed the narration all the audible books in this series but this one kept jumping between very different recordings with a completely different sound. It sounds like they recorded one version and then just cut in edits but they were recorded under completely different conditions. Constantly ruined the flow of the story.

Moving along nicely

Some heart rending moments, parting with old friends, and a little introspection on the human condition amid politics. This book builds on the characters known and loved. There are losses, but that’s life. A good conclusion, letting the reader know there is more to come, while still satisfying. Well done! Excellent voice acting, with district personalities behind each voice.

Finally, Book 8!

Worth the wait between publication dates. Jefferson Mays' reading clarifies and draws the listener into The Expanse's many storylines

Awesome Corey writing

Corey's writing never disappoints. This story is no exception. The narration is a perfect accompaniment.

Big moments as the series nears the end...

After the events of the last book, Babylon's Ashes, the Expanse series was clearly building up to a crescendo and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. Tiamat's Wrath is the eighth book of the series, with only one more to follow if James S. A. Corey sticks to the current plan, and it took only a single sentence for the point to be made that this series is nearing the end. To keep things spoiler free I won't say what that sentence was, but know that this book is full of big moments and if you are a fan of the series then you will not be disappointed.

The crew of the Rocinante may be dispersed, but they are all playing their parts to keep humanity alive even if a myriad of other individuals seem hell bent on seeing it turn out otherwise. The story moves along from big moment to big moment and just like spending time with old friends it is over far too quickly. In contrast to the first sentence, which made it clear the series was ending, the last sentence lets you know there are still big things to come. The final book is going to be a doozy and I wish there was more than one book remaining because there is still a lot of story to tell here.

Even though I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I do have a couple of criticisms. First, the humor that has always been a part of this series now plays a much smaller role, and second, it felt like some of the story was a little bit contrived this time around. Both are minor criticisms and far outweighed by all the good things, so ultimately I find myself just as eager for the next book in the series as always.

Jefferson Mays narrates the story once again and I will take his excellent portrayal of all these wonderful characters over the TV series any day of the week.

unfortunate bug in chapter 39

I'm enjoying the heck out of this story and performance, so it threw me when I heard the narrator interrupt their narration at the end of chapter 39 with the word 'four- oh-nine' before 'when they're not jokes'. I feel like I missed two or three critical seconds.

gives me a bit of empathy for the characters when they're 'Missing Time', I suppose.

Absolutely incredible

I listened to the whole book within 24 hours. Absolutely amazing and right up there with the best sci fi ever written.

For want of not revealing too much of this wonderful book...

I’ve actively chosen to keep my review what will seem overly simplistic, and moreover in no way fitting for this or any masterpiece, though I feel it a must. That said, I’ve already begun to listen a second time; for those not realizing the fact, keep in mind that this was just released (03.26.2019). That’s how good it is. And that’s how little I want to give away. If you want spoilers, read elsewhere. Thank-you.

Fantastic

A great penultimate chapter in the story.
It concludes some storylines, continues a few others, and opens up a few more. The authors have done it again.

Not much really happens

It's about twice as long as it needs to be. It's also overly descriptive. It's the weakest of the series so far.

Captivating and a great continuation of the story

Book 8 could be an abysmal failure, the story is long, the folks are older, the twist with Lakonia and the things that will destroy everyone a long reach. Instead this is a captivating continuation of a developing story, enjoyed it thoroughly.

Mays narrates excellently as usual. The audio editing/capturing is weird several times, with noise level or voice attitude changes that resemble a possible rush to get this audio version done. Didn't take away from me enjoying the book.

Recommended for anyone on The Expanse
