Idris has neither aged nor slept since they remade his mind in the war. And one of humanity’s heroes now scrapes by on a freelance salvage vessel, to avoid the attention of greater powers. Eighty years ago, Earth was destroyed by an alien enemy. Many escaped, but millions more died. So mankind created enhanced humans such as Idris - who could communicate mind-to-mind with our aggressors. Then these ‘Architects’ simply disappeared, and Idris and his kind became obsolete.

Description
The eighth novel in James S. A. Corey's New York Times best-selling Expanse series - now a major television series.
Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper.
In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.
At the heart of the empire, Teresa Duarte prepares to take on the burden of her father's godlike ambition. The sociopathic scientist Paolo Cortázar and the Mephistophelian prisoner James Holden are only two of the dangers in a palace thick with intrigue, but Teresa has a mind of her own and secrets even her father, the emperor, doesn't guess.
And throughout the wide human empire, the scattered crew of the Rocinante fights a brave rear-guard action against Duarte's authoritarian regime.
Memory of the old order falls away, and a future under Laconia's eternal rule - and with it, a battle that humanity can only lose - seems more and more certain. Because against the terrors that lie between worlds, courage and ambition will not be enough....

hell of a payoff
i honestly can't believe there's more to come.
this series is good. the writing is good. it's not exactly great, IMHO, but it's good as hell. it's just that, if i give 5 stars to this and also 5 stars to Dostoevsky, I'm just not sure what that means. This book delivers on everything that precedes it. no question about that. It's when the true expansiveness of the Expanse unfurls to it's full expression.... but then again, there's more to come! can't wait.

Great story, bad editing
I loved the story, great Alien mysteries is what me initially made me love the expanse series. This book brought everything I hoped for. The editor of this audiobook needs to listen to his own editing cause the hard soft voice of bad editing was really annoying

Great book but badly cut together audio
Really enjoyed the narration all the audible books in this series but this one kept jumping between very different recordings with a completely different sound. It sounds like they recorded one version and then just cut in edits but they were recorded under completely different conditions. Constantly ruined the flow of the story.

Brilliant.
Not exactly sure what the two people meant by saying it sounded badly edited. The up/down, hard/soft is to interchange between different characters. It makes perfect sense and helps (me) imagine them in my mind more than not doing that.
Fantastic series. Fantastically read and proformed.

Best Expanse book yet.
I watched the TV series before starting in on the audio books. I was driven to learn more about the protomolecule, it's creator, and the reasons for that civilizations disappearance. This book, more than any other in the series so far, answered some of those questions.

unfortunate bug in chapter 39
I'm enjoying the heck out of this story and performance, so it threw me when I heard the narrator interrupt their narration at the end of chapter 39 with the word 'four- oh-nine' before 'when they're not jokes'. I feel like I missed two or three critical seconds.
gives me a bit of empathy for the characters when they're 'Missing Time', I suppose.

The sound editing is crazy bad.
As always the narrator is very good. This is the eighth book in the series and he is a big reason for continuing to listen to this series. However with this title I have two issues. The first is my fault, I should have taken a break and moved on to a different story and then coming back to this series. Just a little of burn out.
The other issue greatly affects the listenability of the book. It sounds like the book was recorded in at least 10 different studios each with different equipment and different recording settings. It is almost to the point where it sounds like each is a different narrator. Across chapters it is workable, but there are several times where there is a change mid chapter. In addition there are times where a simple sentence or two are spliced in and it is as bad as watching an edited for tv movie when they replace some of the dialog. Very distracting. I understand wanting to release the audio book as quickly as possible, but seriously?

Big moments as the series nears the end...
After the events of the last book, Babylon's Ashes, the Expanse series was clearly building up to a crescendo and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. Tiamat's Wrath is the eighth book of the series, with only one more to follow if James S. A. Corey sticks to the current plan, and it took only a single sentence for the point to be made that this series is nearing the end. To keep things spoiler free I won't say what that sentence was, but know that this book is full of big moments and if you are a fan of the series then you will not be disappointed.
The crew of the Rocinante may be dispersed, but they are all playing their parts to keep humanity alive even if a myriad of other individuals seem hell bent on seeing it turn out otherwise. The story moves along from big moment to big moment and just like spending time with old friends it is over far too quickly. In contrast to the first sentence, which made it clear the series was ending, the last sentence lets you know there are still big things to come. The final book is going to be a doozy and I wish there was more than one book remaining because there is still a lot of story to tell here.
Even though I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I do have a couple of criticisms. First, the humor that has always been a part of this series now plays a much smaller role, and second, it felt like some of the story was a little bit contrived this time around. Both are minor criticisms and far outweighed by all the good things, so ultimately I find myself just as eager for the next book in the series as always.
Jefferson Mays narrates the story once again and I will take his excellent portrayal of all these wonderful characters over the TV series any day of the week.

For want of not revealing too much of this wonderful book...
I’ve actively chosen to keep my review what will seem overly simplistic, and moreover in no way fitting for this or any masterpiece, though I feel it a must. That said, I’ve already begun to listen a second time; for those not realizing the fact, keep in mind that this was just released (03.26.2019). That’s how good it is. And that’s how little I want to give away. If you want spoilers, read elsewhere. Thank-you.

Loving the series, 1 error in narration
This is easily my favorite science fiction series right now. To say that this is the story that I've been waiting for would give me too much credit for having high expectations and good taste in science fiction, and understanding too well its potential. I am surprised and delighted over and over again.
You've got interesting characters that grow and change, a good grounding in real science and philosophy (although the latter might be more appealing if it were more imaginative and less academic--kind of pins one to 20/21th century sensibilities), sociopolitical intrigue (even if this volume lacks Chrisjen Avasarala it's still a good book), extra-dimensional threat, and adventure on a grand scale--spanning more time and space than most other Sci-Fi.
My one and only grip is an editing error; at 14:40:25 the narration skips part of a sentence and seems include "409" in its place. The reading is otherwise excellent.

Christmas came Three Months later
Toward the end of the year, I always look forward to the holidays. Not because family time, good eating, and going broke at buying useless gifts, but James S. A. Corey (pen names for both authors), always publish another novel in the Expanse series usually in December. I wasn't a fan of "Persepolis Rising" for obvious reasons that I won't write about, but "Tiamat's Wrath" redeemed this series by 10 folds.
I couldn't get enough of this book. Each time I fell asleep in the evenings while listing, I needed to go back to see what I'd missed. These authors came back firing with all thrusters and #8 was exactly what I was hoping for. My only complaint is when they thanked George R. R. Martin at the beginning of the book. We all know that Martin doesn't finish anything!
Christmas came three months later and it brought me great joy at reading this book. I'm hoping it won't take Corey(s) too long to finish the Expanse. After finishing up "Tiamat's Wrath", I'm more stoked on how Amazon will continue on with the tv show.

A great penultimate chapter in the story.

Not much really happens
It's about twice as long as it needs to be. It's also overly descriptive. It's the weakest of the series so far.
