When Robin Ellacott opens an unexpected delivery, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but just as alarmed. He suspects that four people from his past could be responsible - and any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike has essentially ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men.

Histoire
As a massive storm batters the Scottish coast, Gordon Smith’s home is falling into the North Sea. But the crumbling headland has revealed what he’s got buried in his garden: human remains. With the storm still raging, it’s too dangerous to retrieve the bodies, and waves are devouring the evidence. Which means no one knows how many people Smith’s already killed and how many more he’ll kill if he can’t be stopped. The media are baying for blood, the top brass are after a scapegoat and ex-Detective Inspector Ash Henderson is done playing nice.
Description
A breathtaking, labyrinthine epic, Troubled Blood is the fifth Strike and Robin novel and the most gripping and satisfying yet.
Private Detective Cormoran Strike is visiting his family in Cornwall when he is approached by a woman asking for help finding her mother, Margot Bamborough - who went missing in mysterious circumstances in 1974.
Strike has never tackled a cold case before, let alone one 40 years old. But despite the slim chance of success, he is intrigued and takes it on; adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner in the agency, Robin Ellacott, are currently working on. And Robin herself is also juggling a messy divorce and unwanted male attention, as well as battling her own feelings about Strike.
As Strike and Robin investigate Margot’s disappearance, they come up against a fiendishly complex case with leads that include tarot cards, a psychopathic serial killer, and witnesses who cannot all be trusted. And they learn that even cases decades old can prove to be deadly....
PLEASE NOTE: The endings to Chapters 2 and 43 are intentional as each ends on an ellipsis.
Ce que les critiques en disent
"Rowling's emotionally intelligent portrayal of her protagonists never overwhelms the whodunit story line." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
"One of contemporary crime fiction's most delightful partnerships." (Seattle Times)
"At times you might feel as you did when reading the Harry Potter books, particularly later in the series, when they got longer and looser. You love the plot, and you love being in the company of the characters, and you admire the author's voice and insights and ingenuity, and you relish the chance to relax into a book without feeling rushed or puzzled or shortchanged.... Long live the fertile imagination and prodigious output of J.K. Rowling." (The New York Times)

Engrossing To The Very End
I’ve throughly enjoyed the Strike series and this latest installment did not disappoint. The story starts up about a year after Lethal White, and unfolds over about 14 months, so there is a lot going on, no wonder it’s 31 hours long. The heart of the story is about a cold case Robin and Strike have been hired to solve, but it’s so much more than that. Surrounding this mystery are several other cases each with their own quirks and characters. The usual suspects abound, although I’d hope to see more of Shanker, we get more Polworth which is always entertaining. I loved the performance by Robert Glenister, he brings Galbraith’s words alive. I have enjoyed every one of those 31 hours, sipping tea and trying to figure out just who did what. My only complaint is at the end of the book you are directed to the Hachette website for a pdf bonus content (given a password) which doesn’t seem to be available - I’ve e-mailed Hachette to try and figure out why its not working.

Excellent Storytelling
JK Rowling ( Robert Galbraith) never fails to create a compelling story and unique characters. The plot is exciting and suspenseful, the characters are almost always entertaining, and the suspense pulls the narrative forward at a steady pace. Strike and Robin do not disappoint. The narrator is also amazing. This is a thoroughly enjoyable mystery, one that I didn’t want to end.

Still hooked on Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott
I love this series. Stumbled across it when I started hearing about the authors name in the media with the ongoing controversy. Decided to give it a listen and haven’t been able to stop since the first chapter of book one. Regardless of ones sensibilities, I for one don’t see/hear any justification for the author being dragged through the mud, these are fantastic books and provide a nice escape from 2020. Give it a shot, you won’t be disappointed.

Exceeded my expectations
I prefer long books so I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. That said I would prefer a dash more of Cormoran's and Robin's relationship. Also there were a couple of loose ends that left me wondering if they would resurface in a later novel. The narration is particularly noteworthy. Simply put, Robert Glenister is a brilliant narrator.

Love these books!!
So I am crazy for this series and love the narrator. However, one kind of annoying thing. This is the 5th book in this series read by the same man and for some reason, he keeps calling the character named “Ilsa” by the wrong name. In this book, he keeps saying, “Isla”...did the director of this reading not notice? I know this may seem silly, and it really is, I guess...but it’s annoying me!

Gripping story and admirable reading performance
I’ve recently read press coverage of expressed outrage over Galbraith‘s inclusion of a “cross-dressing serial killer” protagonist. Maybe these outraged people should read the novel first... Anyway, I loved the story and the extraordinary gallery of characters in this novel, so exquisitely described, and so brilliantly brought to life by Mr Glenister. Wow. Must listen!!

Best Book Yet!
The Strike books are, by far, my favorite audiobook series. They are the Harry Potter of my adulthood--I can't wait for the next one to come, and it's like Christmas morning when they do. Robert Glenister is a masterful narrator. I am endlessly in awe of his ability to switch between accents, emphasize character-to-character specificities, and maintain them across all 5 books. When I saw that this book was 30+ hours, I was delighted and a little nervous. Lethal White (which I still enjoyed) was more meandering than the other books, and that was just 22 hours long, but Troubled Blood was my favorite book in the series thus far! I adored the occult aspect, the cold case, and--of course--learning more about the personal lives of Strike and Robin. There are a ton of characters and a lot of leads to follow, but it seemed more fluid and natural than Lethal White's convoluted plot. The ending came from left field, and yet it all made sense! I cannot wait to listen to it again. And again. And again. I was a bit worried about this one, given the initial press about the book being anti-trans. The line I remember reading from one of those reviews is something like "the lesson is clear: never trust a man in a dress." I did not sense any anti-trans sentiment from the book, unless mentioning a serial killer's occasional MO of dressing up as a woman three times in a 900+ page book qualifies. For what it's worth.

What happened with the narrator? Updated
I'm not sure what happened to Robert Glenister, but he did not perform in this audio book any where close to where he did in books 1-4. The accents of the characters have changed dramatically - so much so I'm having a hard time following him at points in the story. Also, he is saying character names incorrectly. How can you have the character that has been in all 5 books suddenly have their name mispronounced? I even checked to see if there was a new narrator because of the numerous inconsistencies. The narration is taking away some of the enjoyment of listening to this book, which is my relaxation on the way to and from a very stressful job. The story is up to par with the other stories, but extremely disappointed with the performance. Update: Our cries of distress must have been heard, "Isla" has been returned to her original name of "Ilsa", I may have to relisten to the book so I don't have to yell at my car audio every time her name is mispronounced.

Superb Novel With Endless Puzzles - A Feast
I've been longing for this book from before I even finished listening to the previous book in the series. How wonderful to finally have it. I give it five stars for three reasons. Number one: the plot and writing are first rate, as is the narrator. Number two: The two main characters emerge even more richly realized and electric than in the previous books. Number three: I'm a former English major and I appreciated the fun that the author had building into the book medieval motifs, Elizabethan character names, mythological plot elements, astrology, chapter headers from The Fairie Queene, London history and places, Elizabethan poetry (Spencer's Fairie Queene), masques, herbal-ism, contemporary mythology, Greek and Roman mythology, the Crusades, the cycles of conception, birth, death, the Underworld, the afterlife, regeneration and more. Don't let the third reason put you off if you're not an English and/or mythology geek. Reasons one and two make this a more exciting, gripping, and satisfying mystery thriller than almost any other published and recorded this year. By the way, I think Audible re-edited the narration after initial release. Most of the inconsistencies in pronunciation disappeared between my first listen, on the day of the audio book's release, and my second listen, a few weeks later. Also, the abrupt ending of Chapter 2 now appears to be part of the intention of the author. It now sounds like the character reading an account of a crime was interrupted while he was reading. On to Chapter 3. (I think so, anyway.) Cheers!

Annoying
The story is ok but long and drawn out!! The most annoying thing is the obnoxious poems at each chapter from the “ Faerie Queene” enough....

Who the heck is Isla!?!
Did Nick divorce Ilsa to marry Isla? It's really annoying and 100% took me out of the story. Chapter 2 also cuts off abruptly. There was an incorrect name in book 3, but that was only said once. This one is throughout the entire building book. Doesn't anybody review & edit these things before releasing them?

Good story despite narrator mistakes
I love this series and Robert Glenister, but just a heads up that throughout this entire book he has changed “Ilsa” to “Isla.” I verified that it is correct in the print version. It is quite frustrating and distracting and definitely takes a bit away from the overall listen. It definitely affected my enjoyment of the book. Additionally, chapter 2 stops at the same point in the print book. The transition seems much more abrupt in the audio version for sure.

Stops at chapter 2 abruptly 😞
Disappointing delivery. Names mispronounced and stops at chapter 2 abruptly. It picks up at the next chapter. This is a series you wait for unfortunately disappointed but not with the storyline.

Chapter 2 is complete
I am about half way through and it is as good as the others. Bought the hard copy as well to see about chapter 2 and that is just how it ends. Does anyone hear some weird squeaking sounds in Chapter 29. I have tried several headphones and these squeaks are always in the same place. It could be just me. I have not noticed them in any other chapter. I have not noticed any changes in the voices the narrator does. I still love the reading as I have the previous books. I am so glad the same person has read them all. Back to my book.
