Description

For both Zane and Darby, their small town roots hold a terrible secret. Now, decades later, they've come together to build a new life. But will the past set them free or pull them under?

Zane Bigelow grew up in a beautiful, perfectly kept house in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Strangers and even Zane’s own aunt across the lake see his parents as a successful surgeon and his stylish wife, making appearances at their children’s ballet recitals and baseball games. Only Zane and his sister know the truth, until one brutal night finally reveals cracks in the facade, and Zane escapes for college without a thought of looking back....

Years later, Zane returns to his hometown determined to reconnect with the place and people that mean so much to him, despite the painful memories. As he resumes life in the colorful town, he meets a gifted landscape artist named Darby, who is on the run from ghosts of her own.

Together, they will have to teach each other what it means to face the past, and stand up for the ones they love.

something different

I usually read non fiction, self improvement, biographies etc. I chose this for some lighter listening on vacation. I really enjoyed it, surprisingly it had my attention all the way through. Quite well narrated, I could picture all the scenes and characters. Very entertaining.

Sick of ignorant language

I refuse to listen to or read books that are filled with our modern day vernacular. I once heard a Dad say to his boy who had just dropped an f-bomb, “son, surely of all the excellent words we have in our language, you could come up with something better than that to use on a regular basis”. I agree!

boring and predictable

I kept listening because I didn't take the time to find something else to listen to but it was a very boring book. It was easy to see what was coming (although the supposedly smart savvy characters did not). There are no shades of grey - everyone was either perfect or terrible.

January LaVoy is brilliant as usual but the story

The story lacked real depth.

Nora Robert's is getting a little lazier with her books.

The villains didn't make any sense and didn't feel real and I accurately predicted 95% of the story after chapter 4.

The beginning was amazing and had my heart in my throat but the rest .. just missed the mark.

I really hope the third book in the chronicles of the One has more care taken with it.

Nora Roberts wrote this?

My sister and I read this book at about the same time. Neither of us could believe it was a Nora Roberts’ product. Both of us have read many of her books and, we agreed, this was our least favorite. The book was predictable, lacked substance and did not flow well. There was too much “ coincidence,” to be believable. Also we agreed that it might have been better as three short stories since the transitions were either abrupt or clumsy. Not her best but we will probably read her next book hoping this is not a pattern.

A note to the author: We grew up in the Deep South and neither of us have ever met a southern teacher who lacked noun/ verb agreement skills as did the one in this book. Southern is not not a synonym for ignorant.

Fairytale

I struggled to finish. The plot was very predictable. I knew the ending back at chapter 25 and only finished the book to confirm what I already knew. I found the casual profanity distracting. A good string of expletives when a person is enraged is to be expected, but the use of casual cussing was too much for me.
The characters were too one dimensional. The protagonists were pure and flawless while the villains were pure evil.
Since the author chose to build the plot and theme around domestic abuse , the responses by the victims should have been more realistic instead of so altruistic.
The plot reminded me of an adult fairytale.

Huge Nora Roberts fan

I love all of Nora’s romantic suspense books. Every time I think she can’t top her previous book, she manages to surprise me again! I cried at the beginning of this book for Zack and his sister. My heart went out to them and broke many times over. After that, I started cheering them on! This author manages to tug at your heart strings and make you want to know more and more about her characters in every book! As always, her characters were well rounded and could easily be related to by most anyone. You didn’t have to go through child abuse to feel the pain and the sorrow for Zack and his sister. I totally recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romantic suspense with a great ending.

Eh

Under Currents is a crazy quilt of Roberts motifs which were more enjoyable in other books. I loved Zane’s story for the part he, Bree, Lee, and Emily played. The modern romantic suspense part, however, didn’t hold my attention. I didn’t feel the romance and the suspense kept getting more and more ridiculous. Skip this one and get The Witness or Obsession.

Enough already!!

I have read most of Nora Roberts books and I am a fan. However, by the time this book came to an end i was kind of over it all. I mean how many times do they need to be beaten, attacked, beaten again and again. This one felt a bit contrived and redundant. I'm glad it's over.

Under Currents

Not good. Very boring with very little story line or any real content, Just a lot of fluff banter between characters. Lame and boring.

Lazy and Predictable

Let me start out by that Nora Robert's is an author that I adore. I will automatically purchase anything that she publishes. Unfortunately, this book was not up to her normal high standards. The book has multiple story lines that are smashed together far too quickly. It makes for lazy writing and a predictable story.

Would have been a 5 but....

I really enjoyed this story . Darby
made you want to be her and Zane is every girl's dream.
However, it goes sideways because the fact that no one suspected the culprit is simply not believable. I cannot be specific because I want others to read and enjoy the story. I am just disappointed that the author paints a picture of strong, intelligent characters on one hand and then makes them deaf, fumb and blind in the other. I saw the ending coming from a mile away. Editors- how did you let this happen. Story redeemed by true love and happily ever after which will win me over every time.

Don’t waste your time

Standard Nora Roberts romance and pseudo thriller. The protagonists are likeable and overly sweet. The bad guys are one dimensional and totally ugly. The consistent theme throughout this disjointed story is domestic abuse ramped up to a ridiculous pitch. Skip this one and look for better writing. The narration was excellent, too bad the story wasn’t!
