Description

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens - town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing - even murder - to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

Great book recommend !

Well it’s me again the guy who has been reading every Stephen king book he can get his hands on, this book starts off a little slow but quickly catches your attention for the other 99% of the book there are a lot of characters and a lot of things happening in the book at the same time that affect everything in this “dome” where no one can get out and no one can get in! Who knows who could be under the dome when it appears! The performance of the reader of this book was another reason it was so enjoyable the reader is the KEY to a good story and this guy nailed it and made me hater and love character much more than I would by reading the paperback, hope you enjoy this book as much as I did -GW

Need another man to hate?

This was a terrific listen. Interesting parallels between the real world and the dome. Always love Stephen King stories. Much different from the series that played last year on tv

Epic novel

Another good one from King.

I really enjoyed The Stand and this one was similar in the way it put you into the story. I despised the bad guys and wanted them to get it in the end.

I really enjoy King’s novels especially when I can listen to them in my car on a long ride.

The explanation of the dome was good. Plausible in a way that can be in a sci-fi novel. I don’t want to give anything away but it wasn’t cheesy.

Overall a great yarn.

Not my favourite King story, but enjoyable

The story was very straight forward. These guys are the baddies, and they are very bad. These guys are the goodies, and they are the goodest people of the purest intentions. The compelling part of the story is NOT the 2D characters, but, of course the Dome: where it came from, what they're going to do, etc. And the story pushes forward constantly, keeping you interested. The narrator wasn't great, though. Easy to listen to voice, but there were to many characters for his limited repertoire of voices. And his accents were mediocre *at best*. The main baddie sounded like he was from the south, and FAR TOO MANY men sounded like Thirston Howell III from Gilligan's Island... I feel as well that he often mixed up character's voices throughout the story.

Less Believable Than the Earth is Flat

First off, I cannot believe people would resort to murder, suicide, and rape in less than a week much less the disaster management displayed in this book. If this is the kind of story people read Stephen King for then WOW.

Also, 34 hours of detail and story, less than 30 minutes of ending; what a let down. I can see why he started this idea when he started out but for a long-time author it is very immature and needs more development or at least some trim down and ending.

Finally, it took more than 34 hours to listen to it as I had to stop listening because some parts disturb humanity this book is best not read/heard by someone with depression or survivor issues.

Tired of the politics

What disappointed you about Under the Dome?

I used to be excited when there was a new Stephen King book out. But in so many of his last books, like this one, he wears me out with his political commentary. I'm not interested in his politics, as a matter of fact it offends me. So sad, but I'm done being an audience to his ignorant political theories. I'll re-read "The Green Mile" if I get a craving for something vintage King.

Garbage

I probably won’t buy another Stephen king book. Great up until the ending. I like The Stand way better.

I -HATED- this book

Reading this was like getting bludgeoned over the head repeatedly. It’s full of the most helpless protagonists in existence, whose efforts are just so desperately meaningless and useless. If you quite literally enjoy shooting fish in a barrel... then maybe you’ll like this book.

Meh

kept me interested enough to finish it, but wow...some of those accents and sayings are annoying. i know you're not supposed to like the bad guy, but i was about ready to punch my self in the face if i heard "cotton-picking" or "rhymes with witch" many more times. also, i'd have liked a little more expansion on the ending. not giving anything away...but it was just a little disappointing.

this was awful

this book was way to long and very bad. This is the second book i listened to by steven king and this one is definitely the worst book I have ever read. It portrays people as idiots. Why wouldn't the military broadcast on the radio or internet or tv what was happening to the people and have the people stop what was happening. I am sure if the president chimed in and announce that the town leader is a bad guy, the people would believe Him.

35 hours I won't get back

The narrator did an excellent job, especially with such an enormous cast. But I felt the same as ever at the end of this very long novel: Stephen King weaves a great story but has no follow through for endings.

I am a huge King fan, but this is his worst

Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or Raul Esparza?

Yes of course. I love Stephen King

What could Stephen King have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

It was far too long, and some of the subplots didn't feel meaningful. The book lacked the compelling characters, surprising and thrilling plot, and overall enjoyment of his other books.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Raul Esparza?

Yes, the performance was perfectly fine.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It's still very interesting to read about all these people living under the dome, but the plot just didn't do it for me.

Any additional comments?

Skip this book and read one of King's better books.

The worse Stephen king novel I've ever heard

What disappointed you about Under the Dome?

He put characters in unbelievable situations with unbelievable outcomes.

Would you ever listen to anything by Stephen King again?

Probably. But not anytime soon

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Narrator was versatile in giving characters different voices but their voices were irritating

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment and I heard 3/4ths before I gave up.

Any additional comments?

Not worth the money and definitely not worth the time from my precious life... Can't get that back now
