Aliens exist...and, as it turns out, most of them aren’t that friendly. Jacob Brown wasn’t even born yet the first time they attacked Earth. He was only 14 the second time it happened. When Earth finally came together and fielded its first spaceborne military, Jacob didn’t hesitate to volunteer. Serving aboard a mighty starship, he’d be able to defend his planet - and his family - when, inevitably, they came again.

Histoire137
For dinosaurs, it was a big rock. For humans: Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). When the Earth is hit by the greatest CME in recorded history (several times larger than the Carrington Event of 1859), the combined societies of the planet's most developed nations struggle to adapt to a life thrust back into the Dark Ages. In the United States, the military scrambles to speed the nation's recovery on multiple fronts including putting down riots, establishing relief camps, delivering medical aid, and bringing communication and travel back on line. Just as a real foothold is established in retaking the skies (utilizing existing commercial aircraft supplemented by military resources and ground control systems), a mysterious virus takes hold of the population, spreading globally over the very flight routes that the survivors fought so hard to rebuild.

For the first time, he thinks he has a shot at a better life. But survival is not guaranteed. Leading an elite team of mech operators, he is deployed to a frozen planet called Ferrous where dangerous relics of a past war lurk beneath the ice and savage creatures prowl the barren wastelands. Scientists on Ferrous are chasing rumors of godlike technologies buried in the ruins of a long-extinct civilization.

Histoire134
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

The Martian meets Gravity when Army Pilot Vaughn Singleton, Earth’s last man, rushes to Area 51 in search of a spaceplane after he discovers the last woman is stranded on the International Space Station and barely alive - thus beginning a race against time. The astronaut stranded aboard the space station, Commander Angela Brown, is a theoretical physicist who used to work at the collider.

First, Brody is more of a guest character for the majority of this book. Second, there is no plot which makes it very, very boring. Most of the book is them walking to a place and then having a meeting. The meeting goes as predicted, remember that Political Officers are a thing in communist militaries and they live in an age of AI. Third, they receive ONE piece of semi-important information, being the time that has passed between the group leaving Earth and arriving to the planet, which is quickly ignored. Fourth, critical information is not asked, investigated, or divulged. They consistently brag about being Rangers but have no care or concern about linking up with their CoC (Chain of Command) or even establishing contact with America, not even for a situation report. They literally anticipate being an independent state and fighting American forces who may arrive on the planet. Take some nuance with that last point, obviously they should be prepared for anything, and Americans have unmatched enthusiasm for wanting to overthrow their own government should it become tyrannical, but Jesus man, we aren't "there yet" when it comes to the situation that the characters find themselves in. Sixth, some of the language is cringey to people who are in the military and have deployed, one of them, while in combat, said "lay down the hate" on the radio for example - Mofo - don't jam comms with BS, give calm, clear, concise target indications or STFU. Lastly, every character outside of Brody is so Vanilla that I'd rather hear about the nuances of paint drying than their thoughts on anything. This one was a hard one to listen to folks, I'm a fan of the series too, I appreciate the author, but there was literally no plot, it was very very boring. I found myself actually getting angry as I was continuously listening to the book for so long and there weren't an plot developments and only a few character developments. I was so upset by the end of the book (because I like the author) that I made sure to wait a long time before writing a review. At the end of the day, there was no plot, and I don't think the authors know what they're doing with this series.
Now the positives. RC Bray was great. The author is very good at articulating action scenes. There were a few "Laugh Out Loud" scenes that hit me hard, and I don't laugh out loud very often. So again, the author is good with character humour and seems to understand military culture pretty well. There isn't much more to say other than that this was a disappointment and as much as I like the author(s), I think that they don't know what they're doing with the story and this entire book was a waste of time. It was so disappointing, and had such low effort in it, that I almost feel like they're just putting out content for a cash grab.
A story with no plot
