For years, the ancient alien AI known as Skippy (the Magnificent, don’t forget that part) has been able to do one impossible thing after another. What is his secret? It’s simple: 100 percent grade-a extreme awesomeness. And also because he had never been faced with an opponent of equal power. Until now. This time, he might need a little help from a band of filthy monkeys.

Contains books 1-3 of The Forgotten. Sheriff Hayden Duke was born on the Pilgrim, and he expects to die on the Pilgrim, like his father, and his father before him. That's the way things are on a generation starship centuries from home. He's never questioned it. Access points to the ship's controls are sealed, the systems that guide her automated and out of reach. Until a malfunction forces his engineer wife to the edge of the habitable zone to inspect the damage. Until she contacts him, breathless, to tell him she found a body, and it doesn't belong to anyone on board.

Description
The future isn’t what they expected.
A company of Army Rangers is sent on an interstellar colony ship to secure a foothold on a dangerous, alien planet through violence of action. Leaving behind a warring Earth flung headfirst into a conflict of mutual assured destruction, the Rangers and the accompanying crew of first colonists are guided on a 40-year journey by an unprecedented artificial intelligence.
But when they emerge from the frigid embrace of cryosleep, they awake to a nightmare, finding themselves greeted by the same ruthless enemy that brought about the ruin of Earth. Alone on a dangerous, alien planet and with no hope of rescue or relief, the military colonists are forced to finish the war they thought they’d left behind. And in an unknown galaxy, friends and enemies alike prove to be much more than they seem.
Wayward Galaxy is an explosive military science-fiction adventure featuring defective AIs, valorous soldiers, a brilliant scientist, and gritty combat written by Jason Anspach (Associated Press best seller and cocreator of Galaxy’s Edge) and J.N. Chaney (USA Today best seller and author of the Renegade series).

It's just a war story in space.
Performance is OKAY but it's a bit cringy and hard to tell characters apart with the reader constantly forcing a gruff gravely voice that is very obviously not natural. Kinda distracting.
If you super love military action stories, this might be more for you. There really isn't a whole lot of sci-fi beyond just the setting. This same story could have been told set in Iraq and it wou'dn't have taken much of a re-write. Struggling to finish it, as the actual plot is advancing VERY slowly in between long sequences of "action" and I find myself constantly wishing they'd get to the point, instead of being pulled in and intrigued. The gun fights feel more like a distraction from the real story.

Great book
This book feels like a great start to a series, at some points I was a bit "But... Why?" however, this is more so from me being jaded and hyper-critical.
Though at of the entire book, there is one character that stands out, though I won't spoil the story, but if you listen to the book, you will figure it out pretty quickly. A bit one dimensional, but hilarious.

Less fighting and more story please
An interesting premise but it seemed like half of the story is taken up with fighting. Also, it is very jingoistic: lots of good old USA versus the bad Commies. Please.... let's have more nuance. Excellent narration though.

A breath of fresh air
An exciting forray into a distant future with interesting characters and some really fun AIs. This was exactly the type of book I was looking for. Chaney and Anspach are great together, their voices made even more incredible by RC Bray's. I hope there are sequels to this, because this is a universe I want to explore even more.

When audiobooks have after credits material...
I cannot say enough about this book. I'm a big sci-fi junkie and I've listened to a fair bit from Podium and some of it is great, some of it misses the mark. Some of it started out great and has overstayed its welcome (I'm looking at you Expeditionary Force). But in a single title Anspach and Chaney have managed to put together all the pieces of proper military sci-fi. It literally checks all the boxes. I'm so tired of series that don't allow characters to grow or develop or even learn from their mistakes. While it's a bit early to tell, I get the distinct feeling that these authors know how to keep listeners on the edge of their seats. I love the fact that Jared Reach is both an every-man and a superman at the same time. I was absolutely thrilled when Brody appeared in the second half of the book. That was the element of humor that was missing from the early chapters but I realize that every story needs to be properly set, so I'm not at all disappointed. I cannot wait for future releases in this series, it is ripe for exploration and there are still mysteries to be solved. And without providing spoilers, the last few chapters gave way to several possible story directions, all of which will be great I'm sure.
Be sure to listen to the entire end credits, possibly the best author's notes I have ever heard.
Also, RC Bray is a national treasure and deserves a Nobel prize for narration. And if that doesn't exist it damned well should!

How long before the next book?
I love the story and R. C. Bray's narration is spot on! The premise has a few unexpected twists and turns for space opera, which I liked. The narration had a lot of variety which really helps to keep the many characters separated. Over all, I repeat, how long before the next book?

Yes!! Bring on book 2!! Did you start writing it yet??
This was tremendous fun! Be prepared because once you’re hooked you won’t want to put it down. I am bleary eyed from lack of sleep. I couldn’t stop listening. Of course my job got in the way some. The story isn’t the same ole same ole Sci fi. RC Bray is as always the best at narrating and adding his special kind of vocal mojo. I highly recommend this book and yes I would love a book 2 and then some.

Fantastic
Give us more Jason and Bob! This is a great new series. Don't let up on Galaxy's Edge though.
