Nineteen-year-old Night Vale pawn shop owner Jackie Fierro is given a paper marked ""KING CITY"" by a mysterious man in a tan jacket holding a deer skin suitcase. Everything about him and his paper unsettles her, especially the fact that she can't seem to get the paper to leave her hand, and that no one who meets this man can remember anything about him. Jackie is determined to uncover the mystery of King City and the man in the tan jacket before she herself unravels.
Night Vale PTA treasurer Diane Crayton's son, Josh, is moody and also a shape shifter. And lately Diane's started to see her son's father everywhere she goes, looking the same as the day he left years earlier, when they were both teenagers. Josh, looking different every time Diane sees him, shows a stronger and stronger interest in his estranged father, leading to a disaster Diane can see coming, even as she is helpless to prevent it.
Diane's search to reconnect with her son and Jackie's search for her former routine life collide as they find themselves coming back to two words: ""KING CITY"". It is King City that holds the key to both of their mysteries, and their futures...if they can ever find it.

This book, in my opinion, was amazing. It had ne hooked from start to finish, and left me with thorough mental images of the happenings of what was going on through the story, as if the words warped from just sound to an genuine reality, almost touchable from the unknowable distance.
Having the actual voice of Nightvale, Cecil Baldwin (And the other character voices on this audio book), added a depth to the story that would be hard to capture any other way you would attempt to digest this read, and breathed life into the world within the book.
I may be biased, but I would still attempt to recommend this audio book and the book itself to people if I was asked to recommend a fiction. To those who have read this novel, I would recommend the audio book to enhance and enrich the story that they are already familiar with. It is worth the time, and the money, to listen to this audio book.

Probably no surprise, but I think the Welcome to Night Vale novel is most enjoyable in its audiobook incarnation performed by Cecil Baldwin. I had been a bit skeptical. I wasn't convinced a four-hundred page novel or twelve hour audiobook was likely to be any better than any fifteen to twenty minute episode of the podcast. I was pleasantly surprised. I do think that this novel manages to tell a substantial and worthwhile standalone story that contributes to the vibrant colours and rich textures of the town we already know from the podcast, but without being dependent on it.
All the loose threads do come together to make a funky sweater that I would 100% wear ironically. I mean, I would tell people I only wore it ironically, but everybody would be able to tell I had a genuine fondness for it. This novel is charming and manages to find some fresh observations about identity, coming of age, individuality, and community, as any Great American Novel™ must. A lot of its threads come from seeming random or weird-for-the-sake-of-weird starting points, but many are woven into meaningful ends, in the same familiar ways so many aspects of life are meaningless absurdities, but we can choose to make some of them meaningful. And some aspects remain inexplicable or unknowable meaningless nonsense, at least to any one of us. But there is a comfort to the ways we all get to experience these baffling and ridiculous and mundane aspects of life together.
