There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

Description
In this epic and haunting love story set on the Oregon Trail, a family and their unlikely protector find their way through peril, uncertainty, and loss.
The Overland Trail, 1853: Naomi May never expected to be widowed at 20. Eager to leave her grief behind, she sets off with her family for a life out West. On the trail, she forms an instant connection with John Lowry, a half-Pawnee man straddling two worlds and a stranger in both.
But life in a wagon train is fraught with hardship, fear, and death. Even as John and Naomi are drawn to each other, the trials of the journey and their disparate pasts work to keep them apart. John’s heritage gains them safe passage through hostile territory only to come between them as they seek to build a life together.
When a horrific tragedy strikes, decimating Naomi’s family and separating her from John, the promises they made are all they have left. Ripped apart, they can’t turn back, they can’t go on, and they can’t let go. Both will have to make terrible sacrifices to find each other, save each other, and eventually...make peace with who they are.

Good but not great
I really enjoyed Amy Harmon’s book the songbook of benny Lament and decided to try another of hers. This book was good in that it portrayed the experience of early settlers travelling across the plains to find a better life on the west coast and the various problems they encountered with weather, disease and Indian tribes. Central to the story is a relationship between a mixed Indian/white boy and a young white woman. It seemed a bit predictable to me and not as clever and engaging as the Benny Lament book. I am going to read another Amy Harmon book now though because I do think she is a very talented writer. If you like the idea of reading about the old west and American migration experience then read this book. But if you are only marginally interested maybe take a pass.

Excellent story-telling!
Okay, Amy Harmon has given me a new love for historical fiction! This book is beautifully written. The setting, the characters, the endless struggle. I enjoyed getting to know the May family, but I especially loved reading about the Shoshone people. All the detail the author put into this story is incredible. I enjoyed the authors note at the end of the story talking about Washakie, John Lowry, who inspired the May family.
To me this book was about love and what love can do to keep you going through extremely difficult times. I feel like we go on a journey with the two central characters as they learn this. The love for your family, for your children, your spouse, the animals you care for, the friends you make, the land, love for the past, present and future all make life worth living even through tremendous loss.
The narrators Shaun and Lauren were wonderful. Excellent narration.

Great story, some narration off-putting
This was an engaging audiobook that kept me wanting to keep listening. Both narrators were excellent, (loved John’s voice) except for the female narrator speaking in male tones. I would very much have preferred if she didn’t try to adopt a male voice but rather, just spoke in her own female voice. Her voice for John was terrible and made me wince every time I heard it. Sorry for that negative note. Overall the story and production were excellent.

She got it right
As an indigenous woman I tend to stear away from non-indigenous interpretations of indigenous history/stories. They tend to be cringy, either romanticizing or demeaning. But I've loved Amy Harmon for years and I finally decided to give this a shot.
And I never should have questioned her heart in writing such a tempestuous story. In the epilogue she explains the context of her motivation in tackling this story and it explains why I felt honoured and respected throughout.
There are many sides to every story, and Amy has done an amazing job of balancing the many sides while envisioning a future full of mutual respect. May we actively attempt to reach Chief Washakie's vision.
Thank you Ms. Harmon

A very enjoyable book....
I thought your portrayal of the life back in the mid 1800’s when pioneers were moving West, was terrific. Trying to keep your story and characters realistic was impressive! I loved the relationship between John and Naomi.... overall, I liked your story very much!

Can't finish this one
The story is pulling me forward, but I can't bear the female narrator for another second. Her femaie voices are overwrought, male voices nasal and child voices shrill. Nails on a blackboard.
