Description

New York Times best-selling author David Wong's Zoey Punches the Future in the Dick is the latest - and arguably greatest - sci-fi thriller in the Zoey Ashe series.

In the futuristic city of Tabula Ra$a, Zoey Ashe is like a fish so far out of water that it has achieved orbit. After inheriting a criminal empire, the 23-year-old finds herself under threat from all sides as a rogue's gallery of larger-than-life enemies think they smell weakness.

On the eve of the world's most lavish and ridiculous Halloween celebration, a steamer trunk-sized box arrives at Zoey's door, and she is shocked to find that it contains a disemboweled corpse. She is even more shocked when that corpse, controlled by an unknown party, rises and goes on a rampage through the house. Speaking in an electronic voice, it publicly accuses Zoey of being its murderer. This is the kind of thing that almost never happened at her old job.

The city was already a ticking time bomb of publicity-hungry vigilantes with superhuman enhancements, and Zoey knows this turn of events is unlikely to improve the situation. Now, she and her team of high-tech tricksters have to solve this bizarre murder while simultaneously keeping Tabula Ra$a from descending into chaos.

“Biting humor and blatant digs at modern society overlay a subtly brilliant and thoughtful plot” (Publishers Weekly) in John Dies at the End author David Wong’s first installment of the Zoey Ashe series, Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits. Now, “one of today’s great satirists” (Nerdist) is back with Zoey Punches the Future in the Dick, the second installment in a “Technicolor tomorrowland” (Kirkus Reviews).

David knows memes

Buy this book, listen to it, laugh, cry, get angry, rise to the top of capitalism, wear a fancy suit, become a cannibal. Profit?

Fun but probably more of a young adult book

Zoey inherits a criminal empire from her father. She never knew him. He got her mother pregnant and then she never heard from him until his death. With the empire comes a loyal staff, a bunch of shady businesses, enemies and power. This all takes place in a lawless city founded by her father.

I like David Wong. Typically his books swing between the bizarre and dick jokes. I really enjoyed the first book in this series "Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits"

This book is fun and engaging but it never really does much with it's premise. There is neither a sense of importance in anybodies actions nor laughing out lout comedy. Mostly it is a mild smirk. The protagonist is a late early twenties woman who goes out of her way to not trust her trusted advisors so she ends up in predicaments of her own making. This makes the rest of the characters do things seem unnatural. I think an exploration of some of the characters would have made the book more interesting as they all seem to have interesting abilities, insight and gravitas. By the end Zoey is just irritating and you want her staff to walk out on her.

The narrator is competent and brings to life most of the characters quite well although all her young men voices seem to be surfer bro.

If there is more books in this I will probably get them but mostly because I really enjoyed "Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits", the first book in the series, vs the strength of this book.

A group of social paths make random choices and it all works out anyway

I found myself constantly just frustrated by the any of the characters self development or character arcs. Everyone just keeps falling back into ridiculous patterns and ultimately half the plot revolves around a mistaken assumption and fake cannibalism.

I’m also left wondering exactly who the audience for this book is, the book seems well placed to act as a dark mirror of modern day misogyny but between borderline exposition on the subject largely does damsel in distress like plotting, and solves teen male angst by locking them all in a MMORPG where they can act out their fantasies, because that is going to solve the problem.

I feel like I have to wash my ears of the sliminess of the characters, except the body guard I kind like his endearing character.
