It’s so painful not knowing your coaching niche. It feels like a high-stakes decision, and, in a way, it is.

    But, desperation can paralyze you.

Relax. Think differently and listen closely to the quiet voices inside.

So often in my Nail Your Niche strategy sessions with coaches they begin by telling me they feel clueless about their niche.

But with a few powerful questions we uncover lots of clues.

Sometimes it’s a strong inkling — an idea they have repeatedly shot down in their mind.

If you’ve ever quickly shot down an idea for your niche it’s worth another look. That could be exactly where the juice is for you.

I’ll explain how and all the benefits to this approach in this short episode.

Here’s a cautionary tale for coaches about onboarding new clients.

I once hired a social media coach whose onboarding process was… asking for my payment. That’s it!

X They asked nothing about me

X They did not provide next steps, set up our first session or provide a way to do that.

I felt left out in the cold and confused!

Days later nothing more than my receipt arrived. I thought I’d been scammed.

Their social presence was impressive and the program was expensive. I expected professionalism.

When I checked back in with this “coach”, they acted like I was bothering them, which put the last nail in the coffin.

I asked for my money back.

    Professional onboarding should:

    · honor your new client

    · help them feel safe and seen

    · and, make next steps crystal clear

Let’s talk about how YOU can do that with class and integrity.

    Sep 16 2025

Is it ethical to teach your coaching clients?

The hallmark of coaching is asking powerful open-ended questions that draw out the wisdom of your client so they arrive at their own solutions.

If you are selling coaching then that’s exactly what you should deliver. Keep it clean and co-creative.

One of the reasons why I suggest to some coaches that they not sell coaching sessions is to allow room for a more hybrid type of service that fits the genius of the coach.

Having your own knowledge capital can help you attract clients and raise your credibility. Your knowledge adds structure to your offer so you can charge a higher ticket price and get it.

Many of my clients who are all trained coaches are also what I call the Teacher Archetype. That’s what I am and why I shifted my coaching business to a hybrid model.

Have you ever wanted to teach your coaching clients skills, techniques and insights to help them leap over learning curves?

Let’s explore how to do that ethically.

I didn’t want to be cheap with my coaching business when I first started, so I generously spent money on experts of all sorts and hired a full time VA to do all the little things I couldn’t be bothered with.

I do believe my time is highly valuable—good mindset there—but, I only wanted to coach and that was short sighted.

I delegated too much, which cost me 3 precious things:

    1. PROFIT because my expenses were unnecessarily high

    2. TIME because I constantly had to review my VA’s work and chase them to correct mistakes

    3. KNOWLEDGE about how to run my business on my own, which was a HUGE liability.

I gave my VA lots of chances before I let them go and when I did, I was lost because I didn’t know anything about how to use the various apps.

I want to help you make strategic decisions about delegating and avoid my mistakes.

How is your money mindset, Coach?

A healthy money mindset is a make it or break it thing in coaching business success — especially when it comes to confidently asking for money from potential clients.

It’s fascinating because it doesn’t matter if a coach had a high-powered job before, how much money they earned, how many certifications or degrees they have, or even how confident they appear — I hear the same admission from coaches …

“I’m afraid to ask for money!”

I felt the same way until I made some mindset shifts. I now know how to attract clients in a non-salesy way. And also, I’ve discovered the power of investing in one’s future.

In this episode I share details about a coaching session I had with a coach where her money mindset shifted.

I’m re-publishing this topic to commemorate my 350th episode and my 7th year podcasting!

A client of mine went home for a family reunion and was relentlessly picked on for becoming a coach.

People she loves who love her said things like:

“Coaching is not a real profession. It’s a pyramid scheme—an unethical line of business.”

“You’ve gone to the dark side.”

“There are a lot of dodgy coaches out there taking advantage of people and stealing their money.”

    Brutal!

I’ve heard similar things from other coaches and experienced some of that myself. You too?

People love to poke fun at life coaches, especially. And coaching is often the butt of TV jokes.

In the last few months, I’ve heard snide comments about coaching in a few audiobooks I’ve listened to.

That’s ONE of the reasons I say:

    Don’t sell coaching session packages.

Yes, use the skill for good in your business but don’t call yourself a coach.

I realize this is controversial. How can a coach think about this dispassionately?

Let’s talk about it and I’ll share some creative personal titles coaches use that help them attract and enroll ideal clients.

Your website? Low pricing? Free coaching?

    No. Nope. And definitely not.

I asked my clients what made it easy for them to hire me for over two decades now.

It comes down to 6 simple, somewhat surprising things that have more to do with how you’re being than what you’re doing.

Although, make no mistake—strategy and visibility are what bring prospects to maybe.

It unlocks a door, opens a window and lights a path.

The right inquiry can raise your client’s self awareness and zoom them past obstacles.

And follow up questions, at right time, deepen the conversation and revelation.

The best questions come from a place of presence and genuine curiosity.

They won’t come to mind if you’re trying to manipulate your client or be the smartest person in the room.

You can’t form pithy questions if you’re in performance mode.

You have to be connected to the human being you’re coaching.
