    Sep 8 2025

Yasmin Nguyen, author, Joy Ambassador, and co-founder of the Retirement Innovation Lab, shares how you, in your professional or personal life, can transform your approach and life satisfaction by activating joy in retirement planning.

Through the Game of Joy, Yasmin introduces “Joy Activators” — experiences that nurture well-being and vitality — and reveals how they help retirees thrive. He also highlights the role of “Joy Blockers” — emotional, psychological, and social barriers that prevent joy — and explains how you can support your clients and yourself in overcoming them.

In addition, whether you're dealing with retirement or not, we'll also focus on how to develop "joy activators, " so you can bring joy into your life during these challenging times.

    In this program, you'll discover:

    • The 5 Principles of Joyful Living and how they provide a foundation for a meaningful retirement and life.
    • “Joy Activators” — practices and experiences that unlock happiness, well-being, and fulfillment.
    • "Joy Blockers” and how addressing them helps you move past emotional and psychological obstacles.
    • How the Retirement Innovation Lab provides financial advisors and coaches with tools, training, and insights to seamlessly integrate holistic planning into their practice.

Join this insightful conversation to learn how embracing joy as a guiding principle can elevate both retirement planning and life satisfaction.

    About Yasmin Nguyen:

His discoveries became the foundation of his book, The Game of Joy, a guide to cultivating fulfillment amidst life’s storms and transitions.

Witnessing his parents face the challenges of retirement, Yasmin, alongside his mentor Kathleen, dove deep into understanding the unique struggles of the retirement journey. Through heartfelt conversations with hundreds of retirees, they uncovered a widespread need for guidance and support during this transitional phase of life.

  • Toward a Fiduciary Society: The Three Domains of Freedom with Dorian Mintzer and George Kinder
    Aug 12 2025

George Kinder's latest book, The Three Domains of Freedom, draws on the work of his lifetime, empowering readers to experience profound freedoms and aspires to change civilization. Drawing on his expertise in mindfulness and financial life planning, he offers a transformative guide to living authentically, discovering one's purpose, and contributing to creating a humane and just society. The book lays the foundation for a new social contract between consumers and institutions.

Kinder says, "It's time we established civilization as a fiduciary culture. I'm pitching a particular fiduciary legislative proposal that takes the essence of ESG and expands to include the planet, humanity, democracy, and the truth, and argues that it should be written into law, not just voluntary."

Kinder aims to bring trustworthiness to every large institution, whether a corporation, government, or nonprofit, by ensuring they prioritize the truth, democracy, the planet, and humanity over their self-interest.

In this episode, you'll discover how to:

    • Experience the present moment through simple mindfulness practices and their connection to your freedom.
    • Design and deliver a clear vision of a profound and meaningful life using life planning techniques.
    • Appreciate and celebrate the gifts of civilization so that you are in a position to address its challenges best.
    • Get involved with the FIAT movement to advocate for fiduciary standards across all institutions.

    About George Kinder:

Author and international thought leader, George Kinder is known in the financial industry as the Father of Life Planning. George authored three books on money as he revolutionized client-centered financial advice through experiential training courses for thousands of advisors from over 30 countries.

A mindfulness teacher for 35 years, Kinder has led weekly meditation classes and residential retreats around the world. Kinder is a published poet and photographer.

His recent books focus on civilization, understanding civilization as both human evolution and the evolution of environments of freedom. His passion is to foster the very best of humanity.

  • Relieving Pre-Retirement Dread and Post-Retirement Turmoil with Dorian Mintzer and Teresa Amabile
    Jul 29 2025

Surprisingly, many older adults approaching retirement feel a sense of dread – even when they have sufficient financial security and are reasonably healthy. In a project sponsored by Harvard Business School, Teresa Amabile’s research team spent a decade researching retirement to understand people’s attitudes toward, decisions about, and experiences of retiring.

She and her colleagues, Lotte Bailyn (MIT), Marcy Crary (Bentley University), Douglas T. Hall, and Kathy Kram (both of Boston University), interviewed 120 knowledge workers in successful companies, including some who were still working, some who had retired, and some who were about to enter the retirement transition. The 14 people approaching retirement in the near term became the “Stars” of this research because they agreed to be interviewed multiple times as they finished their careers, officially retired,

    In this episode, you’ll discover:

    • The “work” of retiring and how to approach the necessary tasks in a way that increases the likelihood of a smooth transition into a satisfying retirement life.
    • The major identity challenges people face in retirement, and some creative ways you can meet those challenges.
    • The upheavals to personal and professional relationships that can occur during this life transition and how you can maintain and build a mutually supportive relationship network post-retirement.

    About Teresa M. Amabile:

Teresa M. Amabile is the Edsel Bryant Ford Professor of Business Administration, Emerita, at Harvard Business School. Her most recent book, Retiring: Creating a Life That Works for You, presents insights from a decade of research on the psychological, social, and life restructuring challenges of retiring. Her colleagues Lotte Bailyn, Marcy Crary, Douglas T. Hall, and Kathy E. Kram collaborated on that work. Before turning her research interests into retirement transition, Teresa devoted over 40 years to researching creativity and innovation. Extending that work, she studied how everyday life inside organizations can influence people and their creativity by affecting inner work life - the confluence of motivation, emotions, and perceptions. The findings of that research appear in her coauthored book with Steven Kramer, The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work.

Teresa's work has appeared in over 100 scholarly journal articles and a variety of other outlets, including Harvard Business Review. She has presented her work to audiences in a variety of settings, including Pixar, Genentech, TEDx Atlanta, Apple, Pfizer, and the World Economic Forum in Davos. She consults with companies and nonprofits, and has served on several boards. She has received a variety of awards, including the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Management's Organizational Behavior Division, and election to the 2024 Thinkers50 Hall of Fame.

  • Renewment®: A Retirement Model for Career Women with Dorian Mintzer and Helen Dennis
    Jul 8 2025

This is a story about Renewment®, a word Helen Dennis and her co-founder, Bernice Bratter, made up.  The word is a combination of retirement and renewal.  So, what is it?  It is a small movement, process, and forum that inspires and supports career women from work to retirement…and beyond.  Over the past 25 years, 35 to 40 small in-person renewment forums spread virally across the country, concentrating in Southern California, where Bernice and Helen live.  Groups have lasted anywhere from 2 to 25 years, most often meeting in someone’s home.

Since the pandemic, they formed virtual renewment roundtables talking about topics and issues related to transition and change, and relevant to our life stages, with roughly 100 women across the country participating.  Again, this has been viral growth.

Renewment groups have addressed topics such as “Who am I without my business card?”  and “What does productivity mean at this life stage?” A common characteristic of all renewment women is that they are not satisfied with the status quo for themselves or their communities.

    In this program, you'll discover:

    • The most important issues facing later-life career women
    • The impact of renewment, and some intended and unintended consequences.

Note: Much of the content is also relevant to men. Yet, since the work trajectories for the boomer and silent generations are somewhat different for men and women, we have focused on women.

    About Helen Dennis:

Helen Dennis is a nationally recognized leader in aging and new retirement. She has received numerous awards for her university teaching at the University of Southern California Davis School of Gerontology and for her contributions to the field of aging, the community, and literary arts. As one of the nation's leading experts on preparing for the non-economic aspects of retirement, she has worked with over 25,000 employees at corporations and universities to do just that. Some of her other work engagements have focused on employment opportunities for older adults, expert witness work on large class action age discrimination cases, and more.

Additionally, Helen is a syndicated columnist on Successful Aging for the Southern California News Group and has published over 1,000 columns reaching 1.2 million readers weekly. She is co-founder of Renewment® and co-author of the Los Angeles Times bestseller, Project Renewment®: The First Retirement Model for Career Women, and has been recognized by PBS Next Avenue as one of the 50 Influencers in Aging.

  • Pedaling Through Midlife on a Bicycle Built for Two with Szifra Birk, Jay Livingston, and Dorian Mintzer
    Jun 24 2025

Leaving middle age and approaching retirement is often portrayed as a time to settle into comfortable patterns and perhaps explore grand adventures. The common view suggests that after you've spent a lifetime building satisfying relationships, now there's time to sit back and enjoy them, to lean into the habits you enjoy, to stop working so hard at everyday things.

Unless everything in your world gets turned on its head and all the familiar, comfortable things start to disappear. What do you do if death or divorce, or both, kick your comfortable world into the gutter, if your golden years threaten to turn into lead? Is there an alchemy that can turn those lead years back into gold?

Szifra Birke and Jay Livingston feel they have done just that.

They've forged a rich 25-year marriage from the detritus of four divorces and a spouse's death. In their insightfully revealing and quirky book, In Tandem: Pedaling Through Mid-life on a Bicycle Built for Two, they share how they took the scattered pieces of their two very different lives and worked to create a joint, satisfying experience where, as two very different people, they each could thrive. These two are both intensely committed to growing ever more aware of their internal speedbumps and the opportunities to laugh themselves into tears.

About Szifra Birke and Jay Livingston:

Szifra Birke is an Executive Leadership Coach and the country's first Financial Behavior Specialist. For her groundbreaking work with financial professionals and their clients, Szifra has appeared in Business Week, in addition to industry publications such as Investment News. In her first career, she co-authored Together We Heal, a book about psychotherapy for adults with parental alcoholism. She coauthored with Jay Livingston, In Tandem: Pedaling Through Midlife on a Bicycle Built for Two.

Jay Livingston is retired from an eclectic career as an executive coach, a prize-winning antique boat restorer, a renowned dog behaviorist, and Director of Development for a Harvard Hospital. He is the author of Simple Steps to Change Your Business, Your Life. His dozen other vocations and avocations are a case study in excellence run amok. He has appeared on NOVA and, in the 70s, an automotive garage he managed was recognized by Ralph Nader.

  • From Babies to Rocket Scientists to Retirees: We Are All Creatives with Dorian Mintzer and Hugh Willard
    Apr 21 2025

Creativity is an innate, generative, evolving process of self-expression. One application of creativity requires an individual to be open to new ideas and approaches to seek an original solution to a problem or challenge. Adjusting to retirement presents significant challenges to an individual's emotional, mental, social, and, therefore, physical health. Pursuing creative activities is essential to securing and maintaining a vibrant, healthy retirement lifestyle.

In this interview, Hugh Willard will provide an in-depth exploration of the role and application of creativity in the lives of retirees. This will include:

    • a broader and deeper understanding of creativity as a tool for psychological health beyond the historical aesthetic application
    • identifying the basic components and tools of creativity and seeing the ways these support the retiree's process
    • exploring the central role of environment, including relational supports, in fostering (or inhibiting) creativity.

    About Hugh Willard:

Hugh J. Willard is a psychotherapist, singer-songwriter, and author with a career spanning more than thirty-five years. He has developed and taught courses on exploring identity, meaning, and creativity in the second half of life for numerous Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes, including those at the Universities of Duke, Georgia, North Carolina State, and UNC-Asheville.

Hugh's first nonfiction book, Finding Beauty in the Gray: Stories and Verse from the Third Age, was published in November 2023. His other published works include a children's chapter book series, The Goodwill Vulture's Club, a YA novel, Degotoga, and a novella, Clive's Crossing. He is currently working on his MFA in creative nonfiction at Bay Path University. Hugh also has a podcast series titled Aging Well: Finding Beauty in the Gray.
