  • Autistic Masking and Camouflaging - The Hidden and Exhausting Efforts of Autistic People
    Nov 21 2025

In this Autism Infocast, we explain the concept of masking or camouflaging, where autistic people consciously or unconsciously hide their autistic traits to fit in with neurotypical expectations. We also discuss why people mask (e.g. to avoid bullying, gain acceptance, or secure employment) and common masking strategies (e.g. forcing eye contact, mimicking social behaviours, suppressing stims). We also highlight the significant mental and emotional toll of masking, leading to exhaustion, anxiety, depression, and autistic burnout. We also explain how masking can delay autism diagnosis, particularly in girls and women. This podcast aims to raise awareness of this often-invisible effort and advocate for creating environments where autistic people feel safe and accepted enough to be their authentic selves.

  • Stimming and Autism - Understanding Repetitive Behaviours
    Nov 7 2025

In this Autism Infocast, we delve into the world of stimming, a natural and necessary behaviour often seen in autistic people. You'll learn why repetitive actions like hand-flapping or rocking are not random, but deeply purposeful tools. We cover how stimming helps people self-regulate, manage sensory input, cope with stress, and express emotions, making daily life more navigable. We'll give you insights into its diverse forms, from vocal sounds to object-focused actions. We'll help you to understand why societal acceptance of stimming is crucial, fostering an environment where autistic people can thrive and be their authentic selves.

  • Understanding and Managing Sensory Sensitivities - How to understand and deal with what’s going on inside you
    Oct 23 2025

In this Autism Infocast, you'll learn how many autistic people experience the world through a uniquely tuned sensory lens, making everyday sensations powerfully intense or even overwhelming. We cover what it means to be over-sensitive or under-sensitive across all senses, exploring how these neurological differences profoundly shape daily life and can lead to sensory overload. You'll gain practical strategies to build a personal sensory toolkit and help you manage these experiences. We also give you insights on how family and friends can adapt environments and provide crucial support, working towards a more comfortable and accommodating world for all people.
