  • Autistic Masking and Camouflaging - The Hidden and Exhausting Efforts of Autistic People
    Nov 21 2025

In this Autism Infocast, we explain the concept of masking or camouflaging, where autistic people consciously or unconsciously hide their autistic traits to fit in with neurotypical expectations. We also discuss why people mask (e.g. to avoid bullying, gain acceptance, or secure employment) and common masking strategies (e.g. forcing eye contact, mimicking social behaviours, suppressing stims). We also highlight the significant mental and emotional toll of masking, leading to exhaustion, anxiety, depression, and autistic burnout. We also explain how masking can delay autism diagnosis, particularly in girls and women. This podcast aims to raise awareness of this often-invisible effort and advocate for creating environments where autistic people feel safe and accepted enough to be their authentic selves.
