Franklin W. Dixon was a pseudonym used by several authors writing series books for the Stratemeyer Syndicate, including The Hardy Boys and the Nancy Drew series. This collection introduces The Hardy Boys, two teenage brothers who hope to follow in the footsteps of their father, a famous private detective: In The Tower Treasure, The House On The Cliff, and The Secret of the Old Mill.

The Missing Chums is the fourth book in the original Hardy Boys series. Chet and Biff, friends of Frank and Joe Hardy, depart for a long-planned boating excursion, but mysteriously disappear in a storm. The Hardy Boys fear the worst when they can find nothing but a small amount of wreckage along the course Chet and Biff were to follow. Suddenly, Frank and Joe's mother receives a ransom note—for them!

Frank and Joe Hardy are excited to see the new mail planes landing near Bayport, until an out-of-control aircraft nearly crashes right on top of them! Their quick thinking saves their lives...but not the plane. And the angry airmail pilot, Giles Ducroy, blames the Hardy boys for his crash! At the time Fenton is working on security for a coastal radar station, which is under construction. The boys visit the college and are informed that the professor is away in Europe. However, the boys become suspicious, and their investigations lead them to Honeycomb Caves in Rockaway, where they uncover a plot to disrupt the operation of the radar station.
