Originally a sermon Mary Baker Eddy delivered in the late 1800s, this book is based on Paul’s Biblical letter to the Ephesians, “One Lord, one faith, one baptism." It offers her insights on how advancing our view of God brings health and healing.

The book also includes excerpts from newspapers of the day about this new religion, which was attracting international attention for its healing work.

The author, Mary Baker Eddy, considered this book her second most important work after Science and Health. In it, she addresses basic differences in theology between Christian Science and traditional Christianity. She explains that God, good, is always present and is all-powerful. From this basis, she shows listeners how to address topics such as evil, sin, and materialism.

Through a question-and-answer format, Mary Baker Eddy explains the basic ideas of Christian Science. The first question is, “How would you define Christian Science?” She answers: “As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony.” Subsequent questions include “Is man material or spiritual?” and “How should I undertake to demonstrate Christian Science in healing the sick?”

Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, wrote this memoir in 1891. The first part of the book outlines her family’s history and her own youth and early adulthood in New England. She then explores her discovery of Christian Science and essential ideas of a scientific Christianity that brings healing. The Manual of The Mother Church has governed the activities of the First Church of Christ, Scientist for more than a century. Its by-laws address the Christian foundation of individual lives and church activity, as well as church structure and governance. Author Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “...each Rule and By-law in this Manual will increase the spirituality of him who obeys it, invigorate his capacity to heal the sick, to comfort such as mourn, and to awaken the sinner” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany).

So, why a reprint of a book over 135 years old when there are so many reprints and new editions of the text? Excellent question and one I will endeavor to answer here. Since it is our goal to find and reprint spiritual classics on the verge of falling into the vast abyss, we came upon reference to this work while reading Lifting the Veil by Lillian Dewaters and The Sickle by William W. Walter.

This ground-breaking book is for the one who is not satisfied with the standard theological positions regarding life and death, health and sickness and sin; one who is eager for a fuller, more practical concept of God as taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus. Astoundingly original, it challenges the popular notions of church, religion, and medicine, and clarifies Christianity not as a system of beliefs, but as a demonstrable science.

Following the publication of her main book in 1875, Mary Baker Eddy was giving regular lectures in Massachusetts, at Hawthorne Hall, near the Boston Commons and named for Nathaniel Hawthorne. Between the late 1870s and the mid 1880s, with a seating capacity of 250, Eddy regularly filled the hall on Sunday afternoons, with parishioners eager to hear her lectures, which were pivotal in helping to quickly build the Christian Science movement. Christian Healing is a lecture she gave in April of 1880.
