When Evelyn King and a family of Nansusequas Indians fail to return from a buffalo hunt, mountain man Nate King and his companion Shakespeare McNair set out to find them. Soon they begin to hear worrying tales of a band of White scalp hunters who have been killing and scalping every Indian they come across. But Evelyn and the Nansusequas turn up safe and sound after being rescued by freight owner Jeremiah Blunt.

The King family wouldn't have lasted as long as they have in the remote, perilous Rockies if they didn't know a thing or two about survival. But even after all these years, the wilderness has a few surprises for them. There's something not quite right about a glacier high atop a peak near their valley. The Indians claim it’s bad medicine and won't go near it. Of course, that doesn't stop Louisa King from cajoling her husband to go on a getaway up to the high country. When Nate King chose a new valley in which to build his home, he wanted to get away from all civilization and the inevitable trouble it brings. But Nate can't duck trouble for very long. Nate King and his family are accustomed to dealing with the perils of the wild. It's the spread of civilization that sends them farther into the rugged Rocky Mountains to find a more secluded home. Along the way, fighting off attacks from rattlesnakes and wild buffalo, Nate becomes separated from the rest of the group. And only then does he realize that civilization isn't so ready to be left behind.

That’s a lesson frontiersman Nate King learned long ago. So when a savage war party abducts his wife and daughter, Nate isn’t about to surrender to despair.

Life in the majestic Rockies is hard. Only the hardiest and bravest of pioneers can survive the never-ending dangers of the frontier. Still, young Zach King can’t wait to return there with his bride-to-be. For the frontier is his home, the only place he feels free from the constraints and prejudices of so-called civilization. But it looks like he’ll have to postpone the homecoming just a little longer.
